Nara works as a day trip

Nara is a former capital where Todai-ji's Great Buddha, Kasuga-taisha and Nara Park, home to the deer, are close together. The guide suggests a day trip to 2 days, and it is an easy train ride from Osaka and Kyoto.

Nara has two stations. Kintetsu-Nara Station is about 8 minutes on foot from Nara Park and about 15 minutes from Todai-ji, which suits a day trip. JR Nara Station is about 20 minutes' walk from Nara Park. There is no direct bus between Nara and Osaka or Kyoto, so take the train.

From Osaka: Kintetsu or JR

A direct Kintetsu train from Osaka Namba takes about 40 minutes to Kintetsu-Nara Station. You can walk straight toward Nara Park from there, so it is the easiest option.

By JR, the Yamatoji Rapid takes about 36 minutes from Tennoji and about 50 minutes from Osaka Station to JR Nara Station. Check the railways' official information for fares on both lines.

From Kyoto: Kintetsu limited express or JR

A limited express from Kintetsu Kyoto Station takes about 35 minutes to Kintetsu-Nara. A limited express surcharge is needed.

From JR Kyoto Station, the JR Miyakoji Rapid takes about 45 minutes. Check official information for fares.

Day route: Kofuku-ji, Nara Park, Todai-ji, Nigatsu-do

From Kintetsu-Nara Station, start at Kofuku-ji. The Central and Eastern Golden Halls are JPY 500 each, the National Treasure Museum JPY 900, and the three-site ticket JPY 1,600; cash only. It is open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:45). As checked on 5 October 2026, the five-storied pagoda is under construction work.

Next, meet the deer in Nara Park. About 1,300 wild deer roam its roughly 660 hectares, and it is open every day, free of charge.

Cross the park to Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall, considered the largest wooden structure in the world. It is open 7:30–17:30 (April–October) and 8:00–17:00 (November–March); JPY 800 adult (JPY 1,200 joint pass with the Todai-ji Museum). End the day with the western view from Nigatsu-do at sunset.

Deer etiquette in Nara Park

The deer are a national natural monument and wild animals. Feed them only deer crackers (shika-senbei): 10 for JPY 200 as of 2024. Give them one at a time, quickly, and when you run out, spread your arms to show you have none left.

Males can be aggressive, especially in autumn. Don't tease them by pretending to feed them, and watch your belongings: they try to eat maps and plastic bags. There are no trash bins in Nara Park, so take all your trash with you.

With extra time or an overnight stay

Kasuga-taisha is a shrine known for its vermilion buildings and 3,000 donated lanterns. Gates open 6:30–17:30 (March–October) and 7:00–17:00 (November–February). The main worship area is free; special worship at the main sanctuary is JPY 700. If you stay the night, go early in the morning as in the guide's itinerary.

Isuien Garden is a Japanese garden made of two parts, one from the Edo period and one from the Meiji era. It is open 9:30–16:30 (entry by 16:00; until 17:00 in April–May), closed Tuesdays; JPY 1,200 adult. Naramachi, lined with old machiya townhouses, is about 15 minutes' walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station.

If you use buses, the Bus 1-Day Pass (JPY 600 adult, JPY 300 child) covers a day of rides in the Nara Park and Nishinokyo areas. You can leave bags for a while at the Nara City Tourist Information Center in front of JR Nara Station's East Exit.
