Krabi vs Koh Samui: Which Thai Beach Trip Suits You?

Krabi (Andaman coast) and Koh Samui (Gulf of Thailand) have different rainy months. We compare island trips, airport transfers, bases and official spending.
Published
The short answer: cliff beaches in Krabi, an island retreat on Koh Samui
Krabi is a beach town on Thailand's Andaman coast, known for limestone cliffs rising from emerald water. You base yourself at Ao Nang and hop between islands and beaches by longtail boat, with snorkeling, rock climbing and mangrove kayaking along the way.
Koh Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand that mixes palm-lined beaches, resorts and quiet fishing villages. You relax on the sand, then take a boat to Ang Thong Marine National Park or nearby islands for snorkeling.
Best for: Krabi suits travelers who want to move between islands and cliff beaches by boat day after day. Koh Samui suits those who want to stay put on one beach and add a day trip to the islands. The two sit on different seas, so their best months differ too.
From the airport to your beach hotel
At Krabi International Airport (KBV), the airport taxi counter or a ride-hailing app takes you door to door: about 30-40 minutes to Ao Nang, about THB 500-800. Shuttle buses also run to Ao Nang beach and Krabi Town; check times and fares at the airport information desk.
Samui International Airport (USM) is in the island's northeast, close to Chaweng. Use the airport taxi counter or a hotel pickup and check the fare at the counter or with your hotel. Shared minivans drop off at several hotels, which is cheaper if you're traveling solo.
Flights to both vary by season. Check your flight search results and the airline's official information for stops and total travel time.
- Krabi taxi or ride-hailing: about 30-40 min to Ao Nang, about THB 500-800
- Krabi airport shuttle bus: about 40 min-1 hour to Ao Nang (check the fare at the airport counter)
- Koh Samui taxi or hotel pickup: about 10-15 min to Chaweng, about 25-30 min to Lamai (check the fare at the counter or with your hotel)
- Koh Samui shared minivan: about 20-50 min (check the fare at the airport counter)
Island trips and sights: longtail boats vs full-day boat tours
Krabi revolves around longtail boats from the Ao Nang beach ticket counter to nearby islands and beaches. Choose Railay and Phra Nang Cave Beach with no road access, the Four Islands tour around Poda, Chicken and Tup islands, Hong Island with its lagoon for kayaking and snorkeling, or a Phi Phi day trip to bays such as Maya Bay. At places like Ao Thalane you paddle through mangroves and limestone cliffs.
Koh Samui's signature is the full-day boat tour. Ang Thong Marine National Park has around 40 limestone islands for kayaking, snorkeling and a viewpoint hike. There is also a Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan snorkeling trip to neighboring islands, with long travel times, and it may be cancelled in rough seas.
On land, Krabi has Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) with over 1,200 steps, the Emerald Pool & Hot Spring Waterfall, and the Krabi Town walking street and night markets. Koh Samui has the Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai), the lakeside Wat Plai Laem, the Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks, the Na Muang waterfalls and the Fisherman's Village Friday market. In both places, national park fees may be separate from tour prices, so check what's included when booking.

Where to stay and how to get around: Ao Nang vs Chaweng and Lamai
In Krabi, Ao Nang is the easiest base, with restaurants and tour counters along the beach and boats leaving nearby. Railay is quiet and reachable only by boat, so you carry luggage on and off. Krabi Town is about 30 minutes by car from the beaches but cheaper, with a weekend night market. Klong Muang & Tub Kaek, north of Ao Nang, suit resort stays.
On Koh Samui, the main beaches are Chaweng, the island's busiest, and Lamai, quieter than Chaweng but with plenty of places to eat. Bophut (Fisherman's Village) is a restored fishing-village street with a Friday evening walking-street market, and Maenam on the north coast suits a quiet resort stay.
Getting around differs too. Krabi's longtail boats leave when full and don't run in rough seas, and songthaews (shared trucks) link Ao Nang, Krabi Town and Noppharat Thara beach. On Koh Samui, songthaews around the ring road are the cheapest option, while island taxis are pricey, so agree on the fare first or ask your hotel to call one. Ride-hailing apps work in both, though cars can be scarce on Koh Samui.

- Scooter accidents are common in both places. Check you hold a licence valid in Thailand and what your travel insurance covers.
- Koh Samui has many hilly roads. The Krabi guide says to always wear a helmet.
When to go: the rainy months don't line up
In Krabi, November-April is the dry season, with calmer seas for island trips, and from May to October rain and waves can cancel boats and tours, so keep your plans flexible. For Krabi we go by the local seasonal advice rather than monthly normals.
The Koh Samui guide says January-August is generally sunnier. Being on the Gulf side, Samui's rainy season differs from Krabi on the Andaman coast: October-December is wettest and boats can be cancelled.
Koh Samui's normals show heavy rain in October (295 mm), November (445 mm) and December (263 mm). November is the wettest month of the year. From January to August, monthly rainfall is 64-134 mm. These figures are 1991–2020 normals for the Ko Samui station, from the Thai Meteorological Department submission to the WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI).
- January-April: the Krabi guide's November-April and the Koh Samui guide's January-August overlap.

How to choose, and what to check before you go
If you want to move between islands and cliff beaches by boat, pick Krabi. If you want to stay on one beach and add a day trip such as Ang Thong Marine National Park, pick Koh Samui. If your travel month is fixed, start with the month-by-month notes above.
