How many days for Koh Samui? 4 to 5 days
Koh Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand that mixes palm-lined beaches, resorts and quiet fishing villages. Relax on the sand, then take a boat to Ang Thong Marine National Park or nearby islands for snorkeling. The guide suggests 4 to 5 days.
Arrive and walk the beach on the first day, take the Ang Thong day trip on the second, see the temples and the coast around Lamai on the third, and visit the Na Muang waterfalls before heading to the airport on the last day. Boat trips can be cancelled on the day due to weather, so avoid booking one on your last day.
Samui airport to the beaches: taxi, hotel pickup or shared minivan
Samui International Airport (USM) is in the island's northeast, close to Chaweng. With the airport taxi counter or a hotel pickup it takes about 10-15 minutes to Chaweng and about 25-30 minutes to Lamai. Check the fare at the counter or with your hotel.
If you're traveling solo, shared minivans that drop off at several hotels are cheaper. They take about 20-50 minutes; check the fare at the airport counter.
Many international routes connect via Bangkok, Singapore or other hubs. Flying to Surat Thani and continuing by bus and ferry is possible but slow. Compare connections and total travel time.
- Taxi or hotel pickup: about 10-15 min to Chaweng, 25-30 min to Lamai; check the fare at the counter or with your hotel
- Shared minivan: about 20-50 min, cheaper for solo travelers; check the fare at the airport counter
- Via Surat Thani: bus and ferry, slow
Getting around the island: songthaews, taxis and ride-hailing apps
Songthaews (shared trucks) are the cheapest way around the ring road. Always confirm the destination and fare before boarding.
Island taxis are pricey. Agree on the fare first or book one through your hotel. Ride-hailing apps also work on the island and fares are set in advance, though cars can be scarce.
Scooters and rental cars mean hilly roads and frequent accidents. Before renting, check you hold a licence valid in Thailand and what your travel insurance covers.

A basic 4-day route
On day 1, go from the airport to your hotel, check in and walk the beach. Dinner is grilled seafood at a beach restaurant: pick prawns or fish to be grilled, but many places price by weight, so check first.
On day 2, take the Ang Thong Marine National Park day trip. Around 40 limestone islands offer kayaking, snorkeling and a viewpoint hike. National park fees may be separate from tour prices, so check what's included when booking, and check official information on park fees and sailings.
On the morning of day 3, see the Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai), a large golden Buddha on a small island, and Wat Plai Laem, a colorful lakeside temple. Cover shoulders and knees at temples and remove shoes. In the afternoon, see the Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks south of Lamai and Lamai Beach, and if it's Friday, stop by the Fisherman's Village market in old Bophut in the evening. On day 4, visit the Na Muang waterfalls, two forest waterfalls, enjoy a coconut and mango sticky rice, then head to the airport.

- Day 1: airport → hotel check-in → beach walk → seafood dinner
- Day 2: Ang Thong Marine National Park day trip (kayaking and snorkeling)
- Day 3: Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem → Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks and Lamai Beach → Fisherman's Village market (if it's Friday)
- Day 4: Na Muang waterfalls → coconut and mango sticky rice → airport
- With an extra day: Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan snorkeling trip (long travel times; may be cancelled in rough seas)
When to go: January-August is generally sunnier
January-August is generally sunnier and a good time to travel. Being on the Gulf side, Samui's rainy season differs from Phuket and Krabi on the Andaman coast: October-December is wettest and boats can be cancelled.
By the climate normals, January-August has average highs of 29-33°C, lows of 24-26°C and 64-134 mm of rain a month. October (295 mm), November (445 mm) and December (263 mm) are far wetter.
The climate figures are 1991–2020 normals for the Ko Samui station, submitted by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) to the WMO normals collection (published by NOAA NCEI). The Na Muang waterfalls are slippery after rain, so take care.

Where to stay, plus budget, safety and entry checks
For a first visit, Chaweng, the island's busiest beach, is the easy choice, with lots of restaurants, shops and tour counters and lively into the night. For something calmer, Lamai has a long beach and a wide choice of stays; for evening strolls, Bophut (Fisherman's Village) is a restored fishing-village street; and for quiet resort stays, try Maenam on the north coast.
Budget about THB 1,500-2,200 per day (guesthouse, street food, songthaews), about THB 4,000-6,000 (beach hotel, tours, restaurants) or about THB 12,000+ (pool-villa resort, private car). Food: massaman curry about THB 150-250, som tam about THB 60-120, fresh coconut about THB 50-100, mango sticky rice about THB 80-150.
Jellyfish sometimes appear, so check beach warning signs, and don't climb the Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks when waves are high. Thai entry rules (visa exemption periods, digital arrival card, etc.) can change, so check official Thai government information before you travel.

- Chaweng: first visit, dining and nightlife
- Lamai: a calmer beach
- Bophut (Fisherman's Village): village charm, evening strolls
- Maenam: quiet rest, value
