The short answer

Phuket is Thailand's largest island. Lively Patong, family-friendly Karon and Kata, and the colorful Old Town each have a different feel. If you want restaurants, shopping and nightlife all in one place, Phuket is the easy choice.

Krabi is a beach town known for limestone cliffs rising from emerald water. You base yourself at Ao Nang and hop between islands and beaches by longtail boat, with snorkeling, rock climbing and mangrove kayaking. If scenery and time on the water come first, Krabi fits well.

Best for: Phuket suits a first Thai beach trip, travelers who also want nightlife and shopping, and family resort stays. Krabi suits cliff-beach and island-hopping fans and anyone after a slightly quieter sea.

From the airport to your hotel

Phuket's airport is in the north of the island, so the southern beaches are a fair drive: about 45-60 minutes to Patong. The official taxi/limousine counter in arrivals or a ride-hailing app gives you a fixed fare upfront and is safer than touts outside.

From Krabi airport to Ao Nang is about 30-40 minutes by taxi. There is also an airport shuttle bus; check times and fares at the airport information desk.

Many international routes to Krabi connect via Bangkok or other hubs. Flying into Phuket and driving over is another option, so compare connections and total travel time. Recent fares are on the route pages.

Beaches and islands — Phi Phi from either side

Phi Phi day trips leave from both Phuket and Krabi, so you don't need to pick one just for Phi Phi. National park areas such as Maya Bay change fees and opening status by season, so check official information. Park fees may be separate from the tour price, so ask what's included when booking.

Phuket's signature trip is Phang Nga Bay, touring limestone islands by boat and canoe. The bay is fairly sheltered, so tours often run even in the wet season. The Similan Islands, known for diving and snorkeling, open only during a set season; check official opening dates.

In Krabi, longtail boats from Ao Nang reach nearby islands and beaches. Popular picks are Railay beach with no road access, the Four Islands tour around Poda, Chicken and Tup islands, and Hong Island with its kayak-friendly lagoon. Longtails board from the beach, so water sandals help.

Getting around

Phuket's beaches are separated by hilly roads, so you need wheels. Grab and Bolt are the easiest with transparent fares, though evening pickups can take a while. Taxis and tuk-tuks are often negotiated, so agree on the destination and price before getting in.

In Krabi you reach islands and beaches by longtail boat. Boats leave when full and don't run in rough seas. Cheap shared songthaews link Ao Nang, Krabi Town and Noppharat Thara beach, and ride-hailing apps are handy in the evening or for longer trips.

Motorbike rental is popular in both places, but accidents are common. Without a license valid for motorbikes, your travel insurance may not cover you. Always wear a helmet.

Side by side

Choose by the kind of trip you want. The guides suggest 5-6 days for Phuket and 4-5 days for Krabi.

When to go

Both are best in the November-April dry season, with calm, clear seas for island trips. December-January is Phuket's peak season, with the highest room rates.

From May to October, rain and waves can cancel boats and tours. Rip currents are common on Phuket's west-coast beaches in this season, and swimming is banned on some days. A red flag on the beach means no swimming.

If you go in the wet season, keep your plans flexible and avoid a boat trip on your last day. Sheltered bays like Phuket's Phang Nga Bay often still run tours.

Check before you go
