Short answer: summer to swim, October for Seorak leaves

In Sokcho, swimming is allowed only during each beach's official summer season. If you want to get in the water, go in summer. Dates change every year, so check the Sokcho city tourism site.

For Seoraksan's autumn leaves, go in autumn. The guide points to the Seorak autumn colours in October, when a red snow crab festival is sometimes held too. October rainfall is about 87.9 mm, far less than July (about 265.6 mm) and August (about 298 mm).

Which numbers we used

The temperatures and rainfall here are the Korea Meteorological Administration 30-year normals for 1991–2020 at Sokcho station: average high, average low and monthly rainfall.

Normals are long-term averages, so they don't tell you this year's weather. Check the forecast just before you go. This article does not cover sea temperatures or peak leaf dates.

July, August and October normals side by side

Korea Meteorological Administration, 1991–2020, Sokcho station. Each line shows average high / average low / rainfall. August is Sokcho's wettest month of the year, and October has an average high of about 19.5°C and an average low of about 10.8°C.

Summer in Sokcho: Sokcho Beach and seaside food

Sokcho Beach is a 5-minute walk from the Express Bus Terminal, and its sand stretches 940 m. Entry is free. Swimming is allowed only during each beach's official season; dates change every year, so check official information.

Mulhoe, made from fresh live fish and served with ice, is a summer favourite. You can try it wherever live fish is sold: Daepo, Dongmyeong and Jangsa ports, the Abai Village raw fish centre and Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. The gaetbae ferry runs 05:00–23:00 from May to October (may change with the weather).

July and August are wet months. Pack an umbrella and a change of clothes, and check the forecast before you leave.

Autumn on Seoraksan: Sinheungsa and short trails

Seoraksan has something to see all year: azaleas in spring, fresh green in summer, autumn leaves and winter snow, and the guide highlights the Seorak autumn colours in October. Sokcho City lists park admission as free, and city buses 7 and 7-1 run to the Seoraksan car park.

From Sogongwon, Sinheungsa has the Bojeru pavilion, an example of late Joseon architecture, and Geungnakbojeon Hall. Sokcho City's two beginner routes are the Biseondae route (3.0 km one way, about 1 hr 20 min) and the Heundeulbawi route (2.8 km one way, about 1 hr).

The Gwongeumseong cable car costs KRW 16,000 return for adults and KRW 12,000 for children, sold only on the day, on site, with no reservations. It may stop in strong wind or bad weather. Some trails close during restricted-entry periods, so check the Korea National Park Service site (knps.or.kr).

How to choose, plus related articles

If you want to get in the water, go in summer; for autumn leaves and less rain, go in October. Either way accommodation is most of the budget, so for the summer holidays and the leaf season compare prices for your dates on booking sites early.

From Seoul, go by bus. Sokcho City puts Seoul (Gangnam) to Sokcho at 2-plus hours, and the Dong Seoul route takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. Check fares on the booking sites.

Our 2-day route splits one day for the mountain and one for the sea, and our Gangneung and Sokcho article compares the winter and summer sea.
