The short answer

Sapporo is Hokkaido's capital. You ride the subway between Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino, eat miso ramen, lamb barbecue and soup curry, and take easy day trips to Otaru, Jozankei hot springs or Biei. If you want city sights, food and day trips in one base, Sapporo is the easy choice.

Hakodate is a port city at the southern tip of Hokkaido. You explore the Mt. Hakodate night view, the star-shaped Goryokaku fort and the Western-style buildings of hilly Motomachi at an easy pace by streetcar and on foot. If night views, strolling, squid and seafood are the goal, Hakodate fits well.

Best for: Sapporo suits a first Hokkaido trip, winter festivals and snow scenes, and day trips. Hakodate suits travelers who like to walk a small port city slowly, night views and old Western-style buildings, and anyone looking for a stop to pair with Sapporo.

Getting there and into town

Both guides use New Chitose Airport (CTS) as the gateway. For Sapporo, the JR Rapid Airport train takes about 40 minutes from the airport station to Sapporo Station, so you can start sightseeing on arrival day.

Hakodate is much farther from the same airport. Ride the Rapid Airport train one stop to Minami-Chitose, then change to the Limited Express Hokuto: train time alone is about 3 hours 10 minutes or more, plus the transfer wait. JR Hokkaido limited expresses are all reserved seats, so you need a reserved-seat ticket. The guide suggests keeping day one for travel.

You can also connect via domestic flights to Hakodate Airport (HKD). There's no railway to the airport; buses take about 20 minutes to Hakodate Station. Connections vary by season, so check airline schedules.

How many days, and how much

The guides suggest 4 to 5 days for Sapporo (with Otaru or Biei) and 3 to 4 days for Hakodate. Sapporo grows with every day trip you add, while in Hakodate the tram links the station area, Motomachi, Goryokaku and Yunokawa Onsen.

Both guides set daily budgets in a similar range. They depend on where you stay and eat, so treat the figures below as a guide.

The guides also give a feel for local prices. In Sapporo, a bowl of miso ramen is about 900-1,300 yen and lamb barbecue about 2,000-4,000 yen per person. In Hakodate, tram fares are about ¥210-260 by distance and the Mt. Hakodate ropeway is about ¥1,800 round trip.

Month-by-month weather, side by side

Temperatures and precipitation are Japan Meteorological Agency 1991–2020 normals (Sapporo station, Hakodate station). We picked May, July, September and December, the months the two guides recommend or mention for events.

Temperatures are very close. Hakodate is slightly cooler in May and July and slightly milder in December. Of these four months, September has the most precipitation in both cities.

Cherry blossoms come in late April to early May in both cities. Lavender near Sapporo peaks in July, and the Hakodate Port Festival runs in early August. In December both cities drop below freezing, so prepare for icy streets. Hakodate's Bay Area hosts the Christmas Fantasy in December, and the Mt. Hakodate road closes to vehicles in winter.

What you do there

Sapporo is about city sights and day trips. Walk Odori Park, the TV Tower and the Clock Tower, have a seafood bowl at Nijo Market in the morning, and ride the Mt Moiwa ropeway for the night view. Lamb barbecue restaurants cluster around the beer museum. Otaru Canal is about 30-40 minutes by JR, with Biei and Furano in summer and Jozankei hot springs in winter as other day trips.

Hakodate is a city for walking and tram rides. The ropeway reaches the Mt. Hakodate summit observatory in about 3 minutes, and it's busiest for an hour or two around sunset. Look down on the star-shaped Goryokaku Park from Goryokaku Tower, and climb Motomachi slopes such as Hachimanzaka to Western-style buildings like the Hakodate Orthodox Church and the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward. There are also the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses built in 1909, Yunokawa Onsen with its free footbath, and Onuma Quasi-National Park about 20-30 minutes by limited express.

The food differs too. Sapporo is known for rich miso ramen, lamb barbecue and soup curry; Hakodate for squid (in season from summer to autumn) and clear-broth shio ramen. Seafood bowls and crab are famous in both, but crab is pricey, so check prices first.

How to choose, or combine both

If your trip is short and it's your first time in Hokkaido, Sapporo, close to the airport, is the lighter option. If you go only to Hakodate, plan for a train journey from the airport that takes much of a day.

To see both, a natural order is the Rapid Airport train from New Chitose Airport into Sapporo, then the Limited Express Hokuto from Sapporo Station down to Hakodate. As on the Hakodate guide's last day, you can also stop at Onuma Park and take a limited express north toward Sapporo or the airport. Check the JR timetable for Sapporo-Hakodate travel times.

In winter, streets in both cities are icy and slippery, so wear shoes with good grip. If you've never driven on snow, use trains and buses rather than a rental car. Check official Japanese government information on entry procedures (such as online registration) before you travel. From November 1, 2026, tax-free shopping switches to a system where you pay the tax at purchase and get it refunded at departure; check official information for the procedure.

FAQ

Sapporo or Hakodate for a first visit?

Sapporo is the easier pick: about 40 minutes from the airport by JR, with plenty of sights, food and day trips. If night views, hillside walks, squid and seafood are the goal, Hakodate is great too.

How long does it take from New Chitose Airport to Hakodate?

Changing to the Limited Express Hokuto at Minami-Chitose, train time alone is about 3 hours 10 minutes or more. Limited expresses are all reserved seats, so you need a reserved-seat ticket; check in advance.

Can I visit both on one trip?

Yes. The Hakodate guide suggests a longer trip if you combine it with Sapporo. Sapporo Station to Hakodate Station is by the Limited Express Hokuto, about ¥9,800 with a reserved seat.

Is winter OK?

December lows are about -4°C in both cities. Streets are icy, so wear shoes with good grip, and since the Mt. Hakodate road closes to vehicles in winter, use the ropeway or buses.
