Nha Trang vs Da Nang: Which Vietnam Beach City Suits You?
Nha Trang or Da Nang? Compare seasons, beaches, day trips, airport transfers and budget to pick the right city.

Published
The short answer: who should pick which
Nha Trang and Da Nang are both Vietnamese beach cities, and both suit a trip of about 4 to 5 days (for Da Nang, that includes Hoi An). They look similar on paper, but the airport distance, the main activities and the best months differ.
Da Nang's airport is right next to downtown, and the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An and the Ba Na Hills are easy day trips. If you want beach time plus sightseeing, Da Nang fits well. Nha Trang is loved for its long seafront, clear water, island boat trips and mud spas. If water activities and resort time are the heart of your trip, look at Nha Trang first.
There is a separate, broader comparison that also covers Phu Quoc. This article focuses only on choosing between Nha Trang and Da Nang.
- Da Nang suits: travelers who want a short airport transfer, and beach plus day trips (Hoi An, Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains)
- Nha Trang suits: travelers focused on island-hopping, snorkeling and mud spas, or a slow resort stay
- Still undecided? Start with the travel month below
Choose by month: January and September-December decide it
Side by side, February to August works for the beach in both cities. Nha Trang's guide says January to August is mostly dry, with February to August the safest bet. Da Nang's dry season from February to May is the most comfortable, and June to August is hot but fairly dry, good for the beach.
January is where they differ. Nha Trang's guide counts January as mostly dry, but Da Nang's guide says nothing specific about January. For a January trip, the case for Nha Trang is clearer; for Da Nang in January, check the official source.
September to December is the rainy season in both. In Da Nang, heavy rain and typhoons are especially likely in October and November and can disrupt plans. In Nha Trang, the rainy season runs roughly September to December, with heavy rain most likely in October and November and occasional storms that can cancel island trips and boats. If island trips are your main reason to go, Nha Trang in these months can disappoint. In Da Nang, the Dragon Bridge, Han Market and the Pink Church sit within walking distance of each other along the Han River, so short city outings are easy on bad-weather days.
- January: mostly dry in Nha Trang; not covered in the Da Nang guide (check the official source)
- February-May: Da Nang's dry season, most comfortable; Nha Trang also fine
- June-August: Da Nang hot but fairly dry; Nha Trang also fine
- September-December: rainy season in both, with October-November the riskiest
- Prices rise during holidays and the summer peak in both cities
Beaches and where to stay
Nha Trang centers on Nha Trang Beach, the long city beach. For a first visit, the city beachfront (Tran Phu) is walkable and has the most hotels, restaurants and cafes. The north beach around Hon Chong is quieter and more local, about 10-15 minutes by car from town. For a resort stay there is Cam Ranh near the airport, or island resorts such as Hon Tre. Cam Ranh is 30+ minutes by car to the city, so think about location if you plan to head into town often.
Da Nang's signature beach is My Khe, a long stretch of fine sand. Staying around My Khe keeps you close to both downtown and the airport, the easiest all-round choice. The Han River area downtown is good for value and city sights, about 10 minutes by car to the beach. Non Nuoc Beach to the south has large resorts and is closer to Hoi An, while the Son Tra Peninsula has quiet luxury resorts; both are less convenient for the city.
In short, both cities offer walk-out-to-the-beach stays. In Nha Trang, the city beachfront and the resort areas are far apart, so your hotel choice shapes the trip. In Da Nang, a base near My Khe keeps beach, city and airport all close.

- Nha Trang first visit: city beachfront (Tran Phu)
- Nha Trang resort stay: Cam Ranh (near the airport) or an island resort
- Da Nang first visit: around My Khe Beach
- Da Nang resort plus Hoi An: Non Nuoc Beach, or a night or two in Hoi An
Things to do and day trips: the sea vs the surroundings
Nha Trang is all about the sea. Island-hopping boat trips for snorkeling and beach time, and warm mud baths with hot-spring soaks, are the classic experiences. Pick an island-tour operator with life jackets and book early in your trip, as tours can be cancelled for weather. Mud spa prices and packages vary, so compare first.
In town you can visit the Po Nagar Cham Towers built by the ancient Cham kingdom (cover shoulders and knees), Long Son Pagoda with its giant white Buddha (lots of steps), Nha Trang Cathedral, the Hon Chong Promontory (slippery rocks) and Dam Market. Note that the Nha Trang guide focuses on the city and nearby islands and does not cover day trips to other towns the way the Da Nang guide covers Hoi An.
Day trips are Da Nang's strength. Hoi An Old Town is about 45 minutes by car from central Da Nang; the riverside lanterns are loveliest in the evening, and some sights need an entry ticket. The Ba Na Hills are a mountaintop theme park reached by a long cable car; tickets are pricey and it can be cloudy and cool at the top, so go early and bring a layer. The Marble Mountains' cave temples and Linh Ung Pagoda with its Lady Buddha statue round things out.

- Nha Trang highlights: island-hopping, mud spa, Po Nagar Cham Towers, Long Son Pagoda, Hon Chong
- Da Nang highlights: My Khe Beach, Hoi An Old Town, Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains, Linh Ung Pagoda, Dragon Bridge
- Dragon Bridge: per the official tourism site, fire-and-water shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and holidays, sometimes paused, so check locally
- Both cities: stay out of the water when waves are high and check beach signs first
Getting from the airport: short in Da Nang, long in Nha Trang
This is where the two differ most. Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is very close to the city, about 10-20 minutes to downtown or My Khe Beach. A Grab car is about 80,000-150,000 VND and a metered taxi about 100,000-200,000 VND. Going straight to Hoi An by Grab or booked car takes about 45-60 minutes and costs about 350,000-500,000 VND.
Nha Trang's Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is a fair way south of the city, about 40-50 minutes by Grab car or airport taxi. The guide gives no amounts for these fares, so check the app or confirm before you ride (check official). A cheap airport bus links the airport with the city beachfront in about 50-70 minutes for about 50,000-70,000 VND; routes and timetables can change, so check at the airport.
From a Nha Trang city hotel, allow about 40-50 minutes to the airport on departure day. Staying at a Cam Ranh resort puts you close to the airport but far from town. Route pages exist for flights from Incheon and Busan to both cities; check schedules and flight times with the airlines.

Budget, food and what to check before you go
Both guides give the same daily budget per person: about 700,000 VND (guesthouse, local food, GrabBike), about 2,000,000-2,500,000 VND (beach hotel, restaurants, massage; Nha Trang's includes an island tour) and about 5,000,000 VND+ (resort and private car; Da Nang's includes the Ba Na Hills). So choose by travel style and season rather than cost.
In both cities you can have bun cha ca (about 30,000-50,000 VND) and condensed-milk or coconut coffee (about 30,000-60,000 VND). Nha Trang is known for nem nuong and banh can; Da Nang for mi quang (about 30,000-60,000 VND) and banh xeo, plus banh mi in Hoi An (about 20,000-50,000 VND). Seafood restaurants in both often charge by weight, so confirm the price per kilo and cooking fees before ordering.
Riding a motorbike yourself requires a licence recognized in Vietnam, and accidents without one may not be covered by travel insurance. Vietnam is under Korean MOFA travel advisory Level 1 (exercise caution), whole country. Entry and visa rules can change, so check official sources before you travel.
- Carry small notes for markets, stalls and local eateries (bargaining is normal at both Dam Market and Han Market)
- Grab is the easy way around, with fares set in the app
- Church visits may be limited during Mass
