When is Da Nang's rainy season, and how much should you worry?

Da Nang's rainy season runs from September to December. Heavy rain and typhoons are especially likely in October and November, which can disrupt travel plans. So the honest answer to "should I go?" is: you can, but plan with room to change things.

For comparison, the dry season from February to May is the most comfortable, and June to August is hot but fairly dry, good for the beach. If beach time is the main point of your trip, look at those months first.

Flights and hotels get much pricier during Korean holidays and the summer peak, so even in the rainy season it's worth comparing prices early if your dates overlap those periods.

If you go: build a plan you can reshuffle

Four to five days (including Hoi An) suits Da Nang. In the rainy season, the trick is to plan outdoor days and city days so you can swap them around. Give each day a "sunny plan" and a "rainy plan" and you'll worry much less.

Don't lock in full-day trips like the Ba Na Hills; keep them movable to a better-weather day. Tickets are pricey, and it can be cloudy and cool at the top, so a bad-weather visit is a real letdown. Check the official source for operating status.

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is very close to the city, about 10-20 minutes to downtown or My Khe Beach. Short transfers make it relatively easy to change plans day by day.

Rainy-day fallback: stay downtown by the Han River

On wet days, staying around the Han River (downtown) beats long trips. The Dragon Bridge, Han Market and the Pink Church (Da Nang Cathedral) are within walking distance of each other, so you can move in short hops and take breaks.

Han Market sells dried fruit, coffee and souvenirs; bargaining is normal, so carry small notes. Visits to the Pink Church may be limited during Mass. If the rain stops, head out to see the Dragon Bridge lit up at night; the fire-and-water show runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and on holidays according to the official tourism site, but is sometimes paused for events, so check the time locally.

Otherwise, book a massage or sit out the rain over condensed-milk or coconut coffee (about 30,000-60,000 VND). For something warm, try mi quang (about 30,000-60,000 VND) or bun cha ca (about 30,000-50,000 VND).

Day trips: decide on Hoi An and the Marble Mountains by the forecast

Hoi An Old Town is about 45 minutes by car from central Da Nang. The riverside lanterns are loveliest in the evening, so stay flexible and head over on an afternoon with a better forecast. Some old-town sights require an entry ticket, and spending a night or two in Hoi An is another option.

If you go straight from the airport to Hoi An, a Grab or pre-booked car takes about 45-60 minutes and costs about 350,000-500,000 VND.

The Marble Mountains are cave temples and viewpoints inside marble hills, with many steps. Wear good shoes and take extra care after rain; an elevator covers part of the climb.

Treat the sea as something to look at

In the rainy season, think of My Khe Beach more for walks than for swimming. Early morning and sunset are nicer than the harsh midday sun.

On days with bad weather or rough-looking waves, stay out of the water and follow beach signs and local advice. Sea conditions change daily, so checking locally on the day is the most reliable approach.

Pack sunscreen and a hat even when it's cloudy; the sun in Da Nang is strong.

Preparing for typhoon disruptions

Heavy rain and typhoons in October and November can change your plans. Before and during the trip, watch for messages from your airline and accommodation, and check flight status with the airline's official channels.

Buy travel insurance before you leave and read how it covers flight delays, cancellations and trip changes; terms vary between policies. If you're thinking of renting a motorbike, note that riding requires a licence recognized in Vietnam, and accidents without one may not be covered by travel insurance. On wet roads, a Grab car is the easier choice anyway.

Entry and visa rules can change, so check official sources before you travel.

What to pack and budget

You don't need special gear, but be ready for both rain and sun. If you're going up the Ba Na Hills, bring a layer, as it can be cool at the top.

Budget about 700,000 VND per person per day (guesthouse, local food, GrabBike), about 2,000,000-2,500,000 VND (beach hotel, restaurants, massage) or about 5,000,000 VND+ (resort, Ba Na Hills, private car). From the airport to the city, a Grab car is about 80,000-150,000 VND and a metered taxi about 100,000-200,000 VND.
