The big picture: how long to stay and where to base yourself

Four to five days suits Nha Trang well. This plan follows the guide's four-day route: Day 1 is Nha Trang Beach and a seafood dinner, Day 2 a full-day island-hopping tour, Day 3 Po Nagar Cham Towers, Hon Chong Promontory and a mud spa, and Day 4 Long Son Pagoda, Nha Trang Cathedral and Dam Market before the airport.

For a first visit, the city beachfront (Tran Phu) is the easiest base. Hotels, restaurants and cafes line the long beach, it is walkable and it has the most choice. For a quieter beach and better value, the north beach around Hon Chong is more relaxed and local, about 10-15 minutes by car from town.

For resort stays and families, there is also Cam Ranh, the resort area near the airport. It is close to the airport but 30+ minutes by car to the city, so if you head into town every day as this route does, travel time adds up. Island resorts such as those on Hon Tre let you stay and play on the island; check the resort's official information for how to get there and when. Many resorts run shuttles into town, so check times and fees when you book.

Day 1: Cam Ranh Airport, Nha Trang Beach, seafood dinner

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is a fair way south of the city. It is about 40-50 minutes by car to town, and if you book through a ride-hailing app the fare is fixed in the app, so there is no haggling. If you take an airport taxi, use a reputable company from the official rank and confirm the meter or fixed fare first.

After checking in, spend the afternoon on Nha Trang Beach, the long city beach. Sunset is nicer for a walk than the harsh midday sun. Check the beach flags and signs, and stay out of the water when waves are high.

Dinner is at a beachfront seafood restaurant. Many let you choose from tanks and charge by weight, so confirm the price per kilo and any cooking charges before ordering. Finish the first day with a stroll along the beachfront.

Day 2: Full-day island hopping, then nem nuong in town

Give day two to an island-hopping tour, a popular boat trip to nearby islands for snorkeling and beach time. Island tours can be cancelled for weather, which is why the guide says to book them early in your trip. Putting the tour on Day 2 leaves room to swap it with Day 3 if it is called off.

Choose a reputable operator with life jackets and safety gear. If waves are high or the weather turns, change your plans rather than pushing on.

Back in town for dinner, try nem nuong, a Nha Trang signature: grilled pork sausages wrapped in rice paper with herbs and dipped in sauce. Another local snack is banh can, small rice-batter cakes cooked in clay molds, topped with shrimp, squid or egg and dipped in sauce.

Day 3: Po Nagar Cham Towers and Hon Chong, a mud spa, a beach cafe

In the morning, visit Po Nagar Cham Towers, red-brick temples built by the ancient Cham kingdom. Cover your shoulders and knees inside. Then take in the coastal views at Hon Chong Promontory, a cluster of seaside boulders; the rocks can be slippery, so watch your step.

The afternoon is for a mud spa, with warm mud baths and hot-spring soaks. It is a Nha Trang classic, but prices and packages vary between facilities, so compare before you go.

In the evening, relax at a beach cafe. Condensed-milk and coconut coffee are favorites, at about 30,000-60,000 VND. If your island tour was pushed back by weather, swap this day with Day 2.

Day 4: Long Son Pagoda, Nha Trang Cathedral, Dam Market, airport

Start the last morning at Long Son Pagoda, with its giant white Buddha on the hill and views over the city. There are lots of steps, so wear good shoes. Next, visit Nha Trang Cathedral, a Gothic-style stone church on a small hill. Visits may be limited during Mass.

Pick up souvenirs at Dam Market, a downtown market for dried seafood, fruit and souvenirs. Bargaining is normal, so carry small notes.

Remember that the airport is far from town. It is about 40-50 minutes from a city hotel, so leave with plenty of time on departure day.

Shorter trip, or one more day

With only three days, keep Days 1 and 2 as they are, then use Day 3 for the Day 4 route (Long Son Pagoda, Nha Trang Cathedral and Dam Market) before the airport. You lose Po Nagar, Hon Chong and the mud spa, and there is no spare day if the island tour is cancelled for weather.

With a fifth day, one option is to keep it as a backup day for the island tour. If everything ran to plan, spend it at Cam Ranh, the resort area suited to resort stays, or at an island resort such as Hon Tre, where you get a resort and theme park in one place. For island resorts, check the official information for how to get there and when.

Before you go: getting around, budget and when to go

Ride-hailing apps are the default way to get around. A motorbike ride is cheapest for short beachfront hops; book a car if you have family or luggage. Green electric taxis are common too; book in an app or hail on the street, and check how the fare works before you ride. With metered taxis, choose well-known companies and make sure the meter is on. The city beach promenade and the restaurant streets behind it are easy on foot; cross streets slowly at a steady pace.

Per person per day, budget about 700,000 VND with a guesthouse, local food and ride-hailing motorbikes, about 2,000,000-2,500,000 VND with a beach hotel, restaurants, an island tour and a massage, and about 5,000,000 VND+ with a resort, private tours and a car. Bun cha ca and bun sua, clear noodle soups with fish cake or jellyfish, cost about 30,000-50,000 VND at local spots. Riding a motorbike yourself requires a licence recognized in Vietnam, and accidents without one may not be covered by travel insurance.

On timing, the guide points to January to August for the beach, with February to August the safest bet. From around September to December, storms can occasionally cancel island trips and boats. Prices rise during major holidays and the summer peak. Entry and visa rules can change, so check official sources before you travel.
