Two nights, three days is enough for a winter trip
Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, nicknamed the Ice City. The guide suggests 3 to 4 days.
Winter is the season for ice and snow sights. Harbin Ice and Snow World and the Sun Island snow sculpture expo open only in winter, and the China Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is held every winter. Check each season's official announcement for opening dates.
Split the trip by area: the old town with Saint Sophia Cathedral and Central Street on day one, Sun Island and Ice and Snow World across the river on day two, and the Chinese Baroque district on the last day.

What to wear: three layers, and stay off the river ice
Ice and Snow World recommends three layers: a quick-dry base layer, a fleece or light down mid-layer and a thick windproof, snowproof down jacket, plus snow boots, thick gloves, a scarf and a hat.
With children, pack a spare set of underwear and socks in case they get sweaty. If you forget something, hats, gloves and padded shoes are sold inside Ice and Snow World (paid).
Be careful with river ice. Harbin police warn that in early winter the Songhua River is not fully frozen and there can be open channels and currents under the ice. Do not walk on the river ice; follow on-site notices.

Getting in from the airport
Several airport bus routes run from Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB) into the city; timetables are published on the airport's official WeChat account. Airport Bus Line 4 is also listed as a route serving Ice and Snow World. Check official fares.

With heavy luggage or a late arrival, a taxi or ride-hailing is easier. Ice and Snow World's official transport guide puts the airport about 39 km and roughly 50 minutes by road from the park. Taxis are metered; have your hotel address in Chinese.

Day 1: Saint Sophia Cathedral, Central Street and the Songhua River
Start at Saint Sophia Cathedral, a Byzantine-style Orthodox church first built in 1907, a short walk from Shangzhi Dajie station on Metro Line 2. Check official information for hours and fees.
From the cathedral, Central Street is about 15 minutes on foot via Zhaolin Street and Shitou Daojie. The 1,450 m street is lined with 75 European and European-style buildings, and even its bread-loaf cobblestones date back over a century. Strolling it needs no ticket.
The Flood Control Memorial Tower stands at the north end of Central Street, with Stalin Park along the south bank of the Songhua River. The Songhua River sightseeing cableway is about 12 minutes from the tower along Stalin Street; ride it around sunset for river and city views from over 70 m up, and stop at the old Binzhou railway bridge, where glass panels let you look down on the structure. Have guobaorou for dinner.

Day 2: Sun Island, then Ice and Snow World
If you have time in the morning, visit the Siberian Tiger Park to see the tigers up close. Check official information for hours and fees.
Then take Metro Line 2 to Sun Island station. The Sun Island Scenic Area is a national 5A scenic area and a national wetland park, and in winter it hosts the Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo. Tickets are bookable through the scenic area's official WeChat account; check official fees.
Ice and Snow World is on the west side of Sun Island, at Ice and Snow World station on Line 2. Entering around 15:30-16:00 is recommended to see the sculptures in daylight and then the lights. Buy e-tickets in advance through official channels to cut queues, and check the official site (ice.hrbicesnow.com) each season for opening dates and ticket prices.
For a taxi afterwards, Ice and Snow World's official guide gives a reference fare of about CNY 20 to Central Street. Have red sausage (hongchang) and dalieba for dinner.

Day 3: the Chinese Baroque district, and a checklist
On the last day, get off at Zhonghua Baluoke Jiequ station on Metro Line 3 and walk the Chinese Baroque historic district. It has the largest and best-preserved group of Chinese Baroque buildings still standing in China, with old alleys and food side by side; allow about half a day. On a snowy day, suancai jiaozi (pickled cabbage dumplings) or tieguo dun also hit the spot.
Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China, so sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a Chinese map app before you go.
