Luang Prabang vs Vientiane: Which Should You Choose for a First Trip to Laos?
First trip to Laos: the old royal capital of Luang Prabang or the capital, Vientiane? Days needed, airport transfers, monthly weather and linking both by train.

Published
The short answer
Luang Prabang is the former royal capital in the mountainous north of Laos, set on a peninsula where the Mekong meets the Nam Khan, and the whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The dawn alms round, sunset on Mount Phousi and Kuang Si Falls make it ideal for a slow, culture-focused trip.
Vientiane is the Lao capital, a low, flat city spread along the Mekong. The golden That Luang, old temples such as Haw Phra Kaew and Wat Si Saket, and the Patuxai monument are all in town, so it is easy to see on foot and by tuk-tuk in a short stay.
Best for: Luang Prabang suits travelers who want to stay a few days and take temples, riversides and waterfalls slowly. Vientiane suits a short trip to see the capital's landmarks, with a Mekong riverside sunset in the evening.

Getting there and airport to town
Routes and schedules to Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) change often, so check with the airline. From the airport, take a taxi or van, or a car arranged in advance through your accommodation, to the old town, and confirm the fare before you get in.
Vientiane's gateway is Wattay International Airport (VTE). According to the terminal operator (L-JATS), buses and airport taxis run between the airport and downtown, and the Vientiane Bus reservation counter is in the arrival lobby. Taxis and minivans charge a fixed fare by destination, but the tariff posted on the airport website dates from 2019, so check current fares at the counter on arrival. The airport advises having cash ready for transport into the city.
The Luang Prabang guide also describes flying into Vientiane's Wattay airport and taking the Laos-China Railway (LCR) from Vientiane Station. The train takes about 2 hours, and fares are about LAK 360,000-1,063,000 by class (April 2026, check official).
- Luang Prabang airport to the old town: taxi, van or a car arranged by your accommodation (confirm the fare first)
- Vientiane airport to downtown: Vientiane Bus, or a fixed-fare taxi or minivan by destination (check official info)
- Vientiane Station to Luang Prabang: Laos-China Railway, about 2 hours; buy tickets only through the official LCR Ticket app or at station counters, and carry your passport
How many days, and what budget?
The guides suggest 4 to 5 days for Luang Prabang and 1 to 2 nights for Vientiane. In Luang Prabang you spread the old town, half a day at Kuang Si Falls and a boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves over separate days; in Vientiane you cover the temples and landmarks within two days on foot and by tuk-tuk.
Neither guide gives a fixed daily budget. The Luang Prabang guide says kip prices change fast, so check amounts officially; the Vientiane guide says accommodation is most of the budget, so compare prices for your dates on booking sites. Vientiane's COPE Visitor Centre is free to enter (donations welcome).
Both cities use the Lao kip (LAK). The Lao tourism authority says US dollars, euros and Thai baht are the easiest to exchange, and Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says US dollars and Thai baht are also widely usable, though exchanging at a bank in advance is better value. Carry small kip notes for markets and tuk-tuks.
Monthly weather side by side
These are 1991–2020 climate normals from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), Lao PDR submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI), for Luang Prabang station and Vientiane Capital station. Both guides name November to February as the best time, so the same months are compared here.
From November to February both cities get little rain. Daytime highs are similar, but mornings and evenings are cooler in Luang Prabang: from December to February the average low is about 15°C there and about 18-19°C in Vientiane.
April is the hottest month in both cities, with average highs of about 35°C. May to September is the wet season in both, and August is the wettest month of the year (about 329 mm in Luang Prabang and 341 mm in Vientiane). The Vientiane guide notes that heavy rain in May-September can flood roads, while the Luang Prabang guide says the rainy season brings green hills and full waterfalls.
According to the Luang Prabang guide, the Lao New Year (Pi Mai) water festival falls in mid-April. Vientiane's That Luang Festival is held every year for 7 days and nights around the full moon of the 12th lunar month (around October-November). Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that incidents rise during festivals, so watch your belongings.
- November: Luang Prabang high 30°C, low 18°C, rain 27 mm / Vientiane high 31°C, low 22°C, rain 18 mm
- December: Luang Prabang high 27°C, low 15°C, rain 26 mm / Vientiane high 29°C, low 19°C, rain 5 mm

What you do there
Luang Prabang's old-town peninsula is compact, so the Royal Palace Museum (Haw Kham), Wat Xieng Thong, Mount Phousi and the night market are all walkable. The Royal Palace Museum, the former royal palace built in 1904 in the French colonial era, is closed on Tuesdays, and Wat Xieng Thong, completed in 1560, is a fine example of traditional Lao Buddhist architecture. The classic moments are quietly watching the dawn alms round and climbing 328 steps up Mount Phousi for sunset.
Outside town are Kuang Si Falls, a three-tiered waterfall about 29 km south, and the Pak Ou Caves, reachable only by boat. Luang Prabang dishes such as or lam (stew), jeow bong (chilli paste) and khai paen (river weed snack) are part of the fun.
Vientiane's highlights are That Luang, the golden great stupa that symbolises Laos, Patuxai, a 49 m gateway, and Haw Phra Kaew and Wat Si Saket, which face each other across the street. Wat Si Saket's ordination hall holds 2,052 small Buddha images in its niches, and officially you can climb Patuxai daily 8:00-16:00 for city views. Don't miss the COPE Visitor Centre on the history of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos, or a Mekong riverside sunset.

- Luang Prabang: Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong, Mount Phousi, dawn alms round, night market, Kuang Si Falls, Pak Ou Caves
- Vientiane: That Luang, Patuxai, Haw Phra Kaew, Wat Si Saket, Wat Si Muang, COPE Visitor Centre, Mekong riverside sunset
How to choose, or combine both
If you can give a few days to a slow cultural trip, choose Luang Prabang; for a short stay focused on the capital's temples and landmarks, choose Vientiane. To see both, you can fly into Vientiane's Wattay airport, explore Vientiane, then take the Laos-China Railway from Vientiane Station to Luang Prabang. Train and flight timetables change often, so check official information.
Check your government's current travel advice for Laos. Under Korea's travel alerts, Vientiane is at level 1 (exercise caution), while the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Bokeo province is under a travel ban; the Luang Prabang guide also notes that some areas carry high-level warnings. Lao entry and visa rules can change, so check official information before you travel.
- Buy train tickets only at station counters or through the official app (beware of tickets sold outside stations)
- The alms round is a sacred ceremony: be in place before it starts and don't disturb it
- Cover shoulders and knees at temples and take off your shoes before entering halls
- Follow safety rules at Kuang Si Falls (the Korean Embassy in Laos reports several drowning accidents)
- In Vientiane, avoid driving or renting a motorbike, and on the Mekong riverside watch for bag snatching and don't accept drinks from strangers
