How many days for Luang Prabang? Plan on 4 to 5

Luang Prabang is the former royal capital in the mountainous north of Laos, set on a peninsula where the Mekong meets the Nam Khan. The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its lanes, where traditional Lao temples and houses blend with colonial-era buildings, are easy to explore on foot.

The guide suggests 4 to 5 days. The Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong, Mount Phousi and the night market in the old town are all walkable, and the dawn alms round happens at sunrise. Kuang Si Falls and the Pak Ou Caves are outside town, so give each half a day. It suits travellers who like a slow, culture-focused trip.

Airport to town: taxi, van or a car from your accommodation

Routes and schedules to Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) change often, so check with the airline. Vientiane's Wattay airport has more flights; see the railway option below.

From the airport, take a taxi or van, or a car arranged in advance through your accommodation, to the old town. Check fares and journey time officially, and confirm the fare before you get in.

The currency is the Lao kip (LAK). The Lao tourism authority says US dollars, euros and Thai baht are the easiest to exchange, at banks, the airport or exchange offices. Carry small kip notes for tuk-tuks and markets.

Coming by train from Vientiane: the Laos-China Railway

You can also fly into Vientiane's Wattay airport (VTE), which has more flights, and take the Laos-China Railway (LCR) from Vientiane Station. The train takes about 2 hours, and fares are about LAK 360,000-1,063,000 by class (April 2026, check official).

Buy tickets only through the official LCR Ticket app or at station ticket counters, and carry your passport. Lao government notices warn against tickets sold outside stations to avoid scams. Train and flight timetables change often, so check official information.

Getting around: walking, tuk-tuks, bikes and boats

The old-town peninsula is compact, so the Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong, Mount Phousi and the night market are all walkable. Bring water and a hat at midday. The flat old town and riversides are also easy by bike; ride in the cooler morning or evening.

For trips outside the old town or to Kuang Si Falls, take a tuk-tuk and agree on the destination and fare before setting off. Ride-hailing apps operate in Laos, but check in the app whether it covers Luang Prabang before relying on it.

The Pak Ou Caves sit across the river and can only be reached by boat. Chartering a boat up the Mekong is the usual way; check fares officially.

A basic 4-day route

On day 1, transfer from the airport or station, check in and walk along the Mekong in the afternoon. At sunset, climb Mount Phousi in the middle of the old town: 328 steps lead to the Chom Si stupa and views over the Mekong and the town. It is very popular at sunset, so go early. In the evening, visit the night market, which the Lao tourism authority lists as open daily 17:00-22:00, with textiles, silk scarves and ethnic handicrafts. Ask prices and bargain.

On day 2, watch the dawn alms round quietly at sunrise and browse the morning market. The Royal Palace Museum (Haw Kham) is the former royal palace, built in 1904 in the French colonial era, with a room housing the Prabang Buddha. The Lao tourism authority lists it as closed on Tuesdays and open 08:00-11:30 and 13:30-16:00; check fees and current hours officially. In the afternoon, see Wat Xieng Thong, completed in 1560, and walk along the Nam Khan.

On day 3, spend half a day at Kuang Si Falls, about 29 km south of town, by tuk-tuk or car. It is a three-tiered waterfall with a bear rescue centre at the entrance; check the entry fee officially. For dinner, try Lao food such as or lam, Luang Prabang's signature stew, jeow bong or khai paen. On the morning of day 4, take a boat to the Pak Ou Caves, about 22 km away, filled with thousands of Buddha images; the upper cave is 278 steps up. Have lunch in town, then leave plenty of time for the airport or station.

When to go? November to February is best

According to the Lao tourism authority, the dry season runs roughly October to March and the hot, rainy season April to September, with November to February the best time to visit. Lao New Year (Pi Mai) water festival falls in mid-April. The rainy season brings frequent showers but green hills and full waterfalls, while Kuang Si Falls has turquoise water in the dry season.

In the climate normals, November to February has average highs of 27-32°C, lows of 15-18°C and 12-27 mm of rain a month. December and January are the coolest, with highs of 27-28°C and lows of 15°C. In April and May, average highs reach 35°C. Rain peaks in July (283 mm) and August (329 mm), while April (102 mm) and October (87 mm) get far less.

The climate figures are 1991–2020 normals for Luang Prabang station, submitted by Laos's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) to the WMO normals collection published by the US NOAA NCEI.

Alms-round etiquette, safety and entry checks

Alms giving is a sacred ceremony. You can simply watch; to take part, prepare offerings in advance, be in place before it begins and kneel quietly like the locals. Disrupting it once started is considered very offensive, and take photos respectfully without disturbing the monks. At temples, cover shoulders and knees and take off your shoes before entering halls.

The Korean Embassy in Laos reports several drowning accidents at Kuang Si Falls, so follow safety rules and don't take risks in the water. For a first visit, the old-town peninsula around Sisavangvong Road puts the Royal Palace Museum and the night market within walking distance, but it gets busy and books up in peak season.

Check your government's current travel advice for Laos; some areas carry high-level warnings, up to a travel ban. Lao entry and visa rules can change, so check the official e-visa site (laoevisa.gov.la) and embassy information before you travel.
