The short answer

Cebu is an island in the central Philippines loved for clear water, resorts and island-hopping trips, popular with families and honeymooners. It suits a trip built around the sea: relaxing at a resort on Mactan Island near the airport, snorkeling on boat tours, and day trips to Moalboal, Oslob or neighboring Bohol.

Da Nang is a central Vietnamese city loved for long My Khe Beach and beachfront resorts, popular with families and couples. The airport is right next to downtown, and it suits a mix of beach time with city sights and day trips to Hoi An Old Town, the Ba Na Hills and the Marble Mountains.

Best for: Cebu suits travelers who want resort time plus island hopping, snorkeling and canyoneering. Da Nang suits those who want a short airport transfer and a beach, riverside night views and lantern-lit old streets in one trip.

From the airport to your hotel

Cebu's airport is on Mactan Island, so Mactan resorts are only about 15-30 minutes away. Many flights arrive late at night, so booking a resort or hotel pickup ahead is reassuring. Cebu City takes about 40-90 minutes depending on traffic, and the bridges get very congested at rush hour.

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is very close to the city. A Grab car or metered taxi takes about 10-20 minutes to downtown or My Khe Beach, and if you are staying in Hoi An, a Grab or booked car goes straight there in about 45-60 minutes.

How many days and what budget

The guides suggest 5-6 days for Cebu (many flights from Korea leave at night) and 4-5 days for Da Nang, including Hoi An. Moalboal is around 3 hours by car from Cebu City, so the guide suggests staying a night or two there; in Da Nang, a night or two in Hoi An lets you enjoy the lantern-lit old town at a relaxed pace.

The two countries use different currencies, so here are each guide's daily budgets per person in local currency. Cebu's resort prices rise sharply in peak holiday seasons, and Da Nang's flights and hotels get much pricier during Korean holidays and the summer peak.

Monthly normals side by side

Both cities use 1991–2020 normals. Cebu's figures are from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport station; the source is the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI). Da Nang's are Da Nang (WMO city data); the source is the WMO World Weather Information Service — Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration.

Each line shows average high/average low and rainfall, rounded to whole numbers. Normals are averages over many years and don't tell you this year's weather, so check the forecast before you go.

When to go

Cebu: the guide names January to May, when rain is lower, as best, especially January to April with clear skies and calm seas. The normals agree for January to April: all four months get less rain than the 12-month average, and April (56 mm) is the driest month of the year. June to October all get more than average, with July (211 mm) the wettest. Typhoons in September-November can cancel boat trips.

Da Nang: the guide calls February to May the most comfortable, and June to August hot but fairly dry, good for the beach. In the normals, February to August all get less rain than the 12-month average and February (22 mm) is the driest, but June has the highest average high of the year at 35°C. September to December is the rainy season, with all four months far above average and October (658 mm) the wettest. In December and January the average high is 25°C, lower than Cebu (30°C) in the same months.

Month for month, February to April is on the drier side in both cities (Cebu 56-89 mm, Da Nang 22-50 mm). From September to December Cebu gets less rain than Da Nang every month, but September and October are still above Cebu's own average.

What you do there

Cebu's signature trip is island hopping: a boat tour of the islands around Mactan with snorkeling stops. In Cebu City's old town you can combine the Basilica del Santo Niño, Magellan's Cross and Fort San Pedro, then take in night views from Tops Lookout. Further south are the Moalboal sardine run, canyoneering at Kawasan Falls and the Oslob whale sharks; the sharks are attracted with feeding, which raises animal-welfare concerns, so decide carefully. About 2 hours by ferry from Cebu City is Bohol, known for the Chocolate Hills and tiny tarsiers.

Da Nang centers on My Khe Beach, nicer in the early morning and at sunset than in the harsh midday sun. Hoi An Old Town, about 45 minutes by car, is loveliest with its riverside lanterns in the evening. Ba Na Hills (Golden Bridge) tickets are pricey and the top can be cloudy and cool, so go early and bring a layer. In town you can visit the Marble Mountains, the Dragon Bridge over the Han River at night, Linh Ung Pagoda, the Pink Church and Han Market.

How to choose, and what to check

If you want a short airport transfer and a mix of beach, city sights and the old streets of Hoi An, choose Da Nang. If you want resort time with island hopping and snorkeling at the center, choose Cebu. Check the month too: September to December is Da Nang's rainy season, and typhoons in September-November can cancel boat trips in Cebu.

Entry requirements, visa rules and electronic arrival registration can change in both countries. Check official Philippine and Vietnamese government and embassy information before you travel.

FAQ

Cebu or Da Nang for a family trip?

Both guides describe them as popular with families. Da Nang has a short transfer, about 10-20 minutes from the airport to downtown or My Khe Beach, while Cebu is great for resting at a Mactan Island resort near the airport and going island hopping.

Which is cheaper?

The currencies differ, so a direct comparison is hard. The guides' mid-range daily budgets are about 5,000-7,000 PHP in Cebu and about 2,000,000-2,500,000 VND in Da Nang. Prices rise sharply in peak holiday seasons in both.

Which is better from September to December?

September to December is Da Nang's rainy season, with October normals reaching 658 mm. Cebu gets less rain than Da Nang in each of those months, but typhoons in September-November can cancel boat trips. Either way, plan so you can change dates if the weather turns.

How many days do I need?

The guides suggest 5-6 days for Cebu and 4-5 days for Da Nang, including Hoi An. For Moalboal from Cebu, or Hoi An at night from Da Nang, a night or two there is a good idea.
