Published
The big picture: an island day, a city-and-coast day, a Rongcheng day
The guide suggests 3 to 4 days in Weihai, and an extra day if you want to reach Chengshantou in Rongcheng. This route follows the guide's own plan for 2 nights and 3 days: Liugong Island on day 1, the city museum and the north coast on day 2, and Chengshantou and Naxianghai in Rongcheng on day 3. If you can stay one more day, a 3-night, 4-day version adds Huaxia City or Kunyu Mountain in the south.
Weihai is a seaside city at the eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, bordered by the Yellow Sea on the north, east and south. Its coastline runs for 968 km, and the sights are spread across the city centre, the north coast, Rongcheng in the east and Wendeng and Rushan in the south, so the key to the route is giving each area its own day.
In the city, more than 10 tourism-related bus lines, including City Sightseeing Lines 1 and 2, link over 20 shopping areas and sights, and Rongcheng has 3 tourist bus lines linking Naxianghai, Chengshantou and Chishan. Check routes and fares in official information.
Day 1: Tourist pier → Liugong Island → Jiawu War Museum
On day 1, take the boat to Liugong Island from the tourist pier (旅游码头) in central Huancui. The island can only be reached by boat, so you need a return boat ticket plus admission. It is a national 5A scenic area and a nationally protected heritage site as the "Liugong Island Memorial Site of the 1894 Sino-Japanese War". In typhoons or strong wind the boats can stop, so check official notices before you go.
Start with the China Jiawu War Museum, a memorial-site museum that opened on 21 March 1985, themed on the Beiyang Fleet and the 1894 war, with exhibits in historic buildings such as the Beiyang Navy Admiralty and the Naval Academy. Entry is free, and your Liugong Island boat ticket serves as the free admission voucher. Hours are given as 8:30-16:30 in the low season (last entry 16:00) and 7:30-18:00 in the high season (last entry 17:30), with a cap of 8,000 visitors a day, so a morning visit is the relaxed choice. Photography and filming are not allowed inside, and don't carry sea creatures you picked up on the shore into the exhibition halls.
Then tour the island by the hillside cable car or Island Tour Bus Line 1 (including a submarine). There is also a round-the-island sea cruise and "Dingyuan Zhuangge" (定远壮歌), China's first digital theatre on the 1894 war, and the wisteria at Ding Ruchang's residence is listed as a first-grade famous tree. The cable car, island tour bus, sea cruise and digital theatre cost extra and package tickets are available, so check prices in official information. Finish with a seafood dinner of oysters and sea cucumber.

Day 2: Weihai Museum → Huancuilou Park → north coast → Huoju 8th Street
In the morning, visit the Weihai Museum on the 3rd floor of the Culture and Art Centre on Jimo Road, Huancui District. It is a national second-grade museum with the core exhibition "Weihai History and Culture" and a porcelain display, plus a branch, the First World War Chinese Labourers Memorial Museum. All exhibitions are free; show ID to get a free ticket. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-16:30 (last entry 16:15) and closes on Mondays (open on public holidays), so if day 2 falls on a Monday, swap it with day 1. Flash, tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed.
Next, stop at Huancuilou Park in the city centre, then head to the Hi-tech Zone's north coast and walk Weihai International Bathing Beach; Jinhaitan Beach and Xiaoshidao Beach continue along the same shore. Beach swimming services run 1 July to 30 September each year, and from October the International, Jinhaitan and Xiaoshidao beaches close for swimming. From October the water is cold and waves pick up, so stay out of the sea and stick to walking on the sand.
In the evening, go to Huoju 8th Street (火炬八街). The coastal sightseeing line "城际4号线" starts here and runs along the sea; check times and fares in official information. Juicy Spanish mackerel dumplings (bayu shuijiao) and springy kelp noodles are a good taste of Weihai's sea. Instead of the museum and beach, you can also see the big show "Shenyou Chuanqi" (神游传奇) at Huaxia City.

Day 3: Chengshantou → Naxianghai in Rongcheng
On day 3, head east to Rongcheng. It has 3 tourist bus lines linking sights such as Naxianghai, Chengshantou and Chishan, and the guide's plan takes the tourist bus to Chengshantou and then moves on to Naxianghai. Check how to get from the city to Rongcheng and the bus times in official information before you go.
Chengshantou is a seaside headland with the "Chengshantou Qin and Han remains", part of a national scenic area and a local nature reserve. Walk the seaside boardwalk and catch the live show "Dongxun Chengshan Fu" (东寻·成山赋). In autumn 2026 it added the Qin Shi Huang-themed "Imperial Garden" and "Chengshan Sea Falls", where waves pour down the cliffs. In strong wind or typhoons the coastal boardwalk can close and sights may shut temporarily, so check official notices.
In winter, add the Rongcheng Whooper Swan National Nature Reserve; Rongcheng has been named China's "Home of the Whooper Swan". Watch the birds quietly and from a distance. For a meal, Rongcheng abalone is thick and springy.
One more day (3 nights, 4 days): Huaxia City or Kunyu Mountain
The guide says to add a day if you want to reach Chengshantou in Rongcheng. With 3 nights and 4 days you can take Rongcheng at an easy pace on day 3 and use the extra day for Huaxia City, if you skipped it on day 2, or for Wendeng and Rushan in the south.
Huaxia City is a national 5A scenic area in Weihai, like Liugong Island. The large show "Shenyou Chuanqi" is staged regularly, and there is an ocean aquarium. Check prices and show times in official information.
For mountains and wide beaches, go south to Wendeng and Rushan. Taibo Peak in the Kunyu Mountain National Nature Reserve is 923 m, the highest point in Weihai, and the area has beaches such as Wendeng Jinhaitan and Rushan Yintan. Weihai is described as having 9 high-quality hot springs. Check Kunyu Mountain's opening hours, fees and how to get there in official information. Rushan oysters, grown in the clean Yellow Sea, are nicknamed "milk of the sea".
Where to stay and how to get around
For a first visit, central Huancui and Weihai Bay is the easy choice: the city centre with the Weihai Museum and Huancuilou Park, and the tourist pier for boats to Liugong Island. Buildings from the British leasehold period are protected nationally as "Weihai British-style architecture". For beaches, coastal walks and evening streets, pick the north coast (International Beach, Xiaoshidao). Choose Rongcheng for coastal scenery, whooper swans and shows, and Wendeng and Rushan for mountains, hot springs and wide beaches.
Check routes, times and fares for public transport from Weihai Dashuibo International Airport (WEH) to the city in the airport's official information before you go. If you take a taxi, have your hotel or destination address ready in Chinese.

Budget, when to go and final checks
The Weihai Museum is free (ID required), and the China Jiawu War Museum is free too (your Liugong Island boat ticket is the admission voucher). Liugong Island needs a return boat ticket and admission, and the cable car, island tour bus, sea cruise and digital theatre cost extra. Check Huaxia City and Chengshantou prices and bus fares in official information. Accommodation is most of the budget, so compare prices for your dates on booking sites.
Pick your season by what you want to do. July to September is beach season (swimming services run 1 July to 30 September every year), and clear autumn days are good for coastal drives, walks and seafood; autumn is also seafood season. Winter brings whooper swans and hot springs. Weihai is described as having a maritime climate: cool springs, cool summers, warm autumns and mild winters, and it is often windy and fairly humid. Expect crowds around National Day (1 October), and in summer typhoons can stop boats to the islands and close coastal walkways.
