Short answer: open all year; April-May and October are the easiest months to walk

Suwon Cultural Foundation does not name a single best season. Hwaseong is an open fortress, free and open every day, and walkable at night.

By the normals, average highs are a mild about 18.2°C in April, about 23.6°C in May and about 20.4°C in October, with about 71.6 mm, about 95 mm and about 54.1 mm of rain. Of these three months, October gets the least rain. July is the wettest month of the year at about 385.1 mm, and January the coldest, with an average low of about -6.6°C. For a half-day route, see the separate post.

January-June normals

The temperatures and rainfall here are the Korea Meteorological Administration 30-year normals for 1991–2020 at Suwon station. Each line shows average high / average low / rainfall; temperatures are in °C and rainfall in mm.

Normals are long-term averages, so they don't tell you this year's weather. January is the coldest month, with an average low of about -6.6°C, and the driest, with about 18.1 mm. Check the forecast just before you go.

July-December normals

Same source and period. August is the hottest month, with an average high of about 30.3°C, and July and August are wet, with about 385.1 mm and about 296.3 mm.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (October): good for longer walks

The fortress circuit is 5,744 m, over flat land in the east and Paldalsan hill in the west. Suwon Cultural Foundation suggests routes from 1 to 3 hours, so pick a longer one in the mild months.

Culture and tourism guide booths at Paldalmun, Seojangdae, Janganmun, Yeonmudae and more open 10:00–17:00. Traditional archery at Yeonmudae runs 09:30–17:30 in March–October (closed 12:00–13:00) and costs KRW 3,000 for 10 arrows.

Summer (June-August): walk a short section in the wet months, and add the palace and trolley

June-August average highs are about 27.5°C, about 29.3°C and about 30.3°C, with about 122.9 mm, about 385.1 mm and about 296.3 mm of rain. At this time it is easier to pick a 1-hour section and add other sights.

Hwaseong Haenggung Palace opens 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00) every day; adults KRW 2,000. The Hwaseong Trolley is a sightseeing train that leaves Yeonmudae, passes the walls and military structures and returns; it runs 09:40–17:00 and costs KRW 6,000 for adults. It has only 36 seats, so book online ahead (bookings open up to the end of the next month; on-site sales are for remaining seats only).

Winter (December-February): shorter sections for the cold

December-February average lows are below freezing at about -4.2°C, about -6.6°C and about -4.5°C, and average highs are only about 4.9°C, about 2.8°C and about 5.6°C. Rainfall is low, at about 25.8 mm, about 18.1 mm and about 28.3 mm.

The walls stay free and open every day in winter. Archery at Yeonmudae closes a little earlier in November–February, 09:30–17:00 (closed 12:00–13:00). The main tourist information centre near Suwon Station Exit 4 opens 09:00–18:00 with English, Chinese and Japanese interpreting.

The walls at night and the Hwaseong Haenggung night opening

The fortress walls can be visited at night, and Suwon Cultural Foundation recommends Banghwasuryujeong at night. Banghwasuryujeong (the northeast corner pavilion) is a designated Treasure, and next to it the Suwoncheon stream still flows under Hwahongmun, the north water gate.

Hwaseong Haenggung's night opening runs 1 May 2026 – 1 November 2026 on Fridays–Sundays and public holidays, 18:00–21:30, last entry 21:00. Free entry on 'Culture Day', the last Wednesday of each month, does not apply to the night opening. Dates and hours can change, so check official information.
