Short answer: you can walk Hwaseong at night

Hwaseong is an open fortress: the walls are free, open every day and can be visited at night. Suwon Cultural Foundation recommends Banghwasuryujeong at night, and Hwaseong Haenggung has a night opening on Fridays–Sundays and public holidays from 1 May 2026 to 1 November 2026.

This post is for travelers who reach Suwon in the late afternoon and stay for the evening. The daytime route is in the half-day post, and normals for all twelve months are in the post on when to walk the walls.

Do the daytime-only things first

Before the night walk, check what only runs in the day. Hwaseong Haenggung's day hours are 09:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:00; on night-opening days, night visits start at 18:00.

Archery at Yeonmudae runs 09:30–17:30 in March–October and 09:30–17:00 in November–February (closed 12:00–13:00). The Hwaseong Trolley runs 09:40–17:00, and the free XR Bus 1795 makes its last departure at 17:00, Wednesday–Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday).

Culture and tourism guide booths open 10:00–17:00, and the main tourist information centre near Suwon Station Exit 4 opens 09:00–18:00 with English, Chinese and Japanese interpreting, so ask about your evening plans before it closes.

Banghwasuryujeong and the walls after dark

Banghwasuryujeong, the northeast corner pavilion, is a designated Treasure. Next to it, the Suwoncheon stream still flows under Hwahongmun, the north water gate. This is the spot Suwon Cultural Foundation recommends at night.

The 5,744 m circuit runs over flat land in the east and Paldalsan hill in the west. Suwon Cultural Foundation suggests wall routes from 1 to 3 hours, so decide on your section and timing before it gets dark.

The guide's Day 1 also ends with Banghwasuryujeong at night, adding the Hwaseong Haenggung night opening on Fridays–Sundays and public holidays.

Hwaseong Haenggung night opening (2026)

Hwaseong Haenggung is the temporary palace where King Jeongjo held his mother Lady Hyegyeong's 60th birthday banquet in 1795. In 2026 the night opening runs 1 May 2026 – 1 November 2026, on Fridays–Sundays and public holidays, 18:00–21:30 with last entry at 21:00. Check official information for next year's dates.

Day tickets are KRW 2,000 for adults (KRW 1,500 youth/military, KRW 1,000 children). Check official information for the night-opening price. Free entry on 'Culture Day', the last Wednesday of each month, does not apply to the night opening.

Pets (except assistance dogs), alcohol, and camping gear such as mats and tents are not allowed.

Dinner: galbi, tongdak or gopchang

Suwon Cultural Foundation lists Suwon wang-galbi (king-size ribs) as a signature food. Its suggested day course has it for lunch, but if you arrive late in the afternoon it works for dinner too.

Try tongdak (chicken) on the Chicken Street the foundation lists, or gopchang at the Gopchang Town it highlights.

If you plan to eat before or after the night opening, check restaurant hours ahead.

Night temperatures, May–October

Temperatures and rainfall are Korea Meteorological Administration normals for 1991–2020 at Suwon station. These are the months of the night opening, May–October, listed as average low / average high / rainfall.

The average low rises from about 12°C in May to about 23°C in August and drops to about 9°C in October. July has the most rainfall of the year (about 385 mm). Normals are multi-year averages, so check the forecast before you go.

Getting back and a checklist

To the Hwaseong Haenggung stop, buses 11 and 13 run from the stop at Suwon Station Exit 4, and 60 and 7-2 from across the road at Exit 7. Bus 3000 from Gangnam Station stops at Paldalmun, and 1007 from Jamsil Station at the Hwaseong Haenggung/Yeomingak stop. For return stops and last-bus times, check Suwon Cultural Foundation's 'How to get to main points' page and official information.

Coming straight from Incheon Airport, check transport on the airport's official site (airport.kr), and check entry rules for Korea in official information.
