Two main ways into the city
Singapore has a single airport, Changi, so there is no airport to choose between. What matters is how you get into town. According to our Singapore guide there are two main options: the cheap MRT East-West Line (about 30-45 minutes, about 2-2.5 SGD) and the quicker, easier taxi or ride-hailing app (about 20-30 minutes, about 25-40 SGD).
The right choice depends on your luggage, your arrival time and where you are staying. Below we cover each option, which hotel areas it suits, late-night arrivals and what to sort out on arrival day. When booking, check which airport and arrival time are printed on your ticket.
MRT East-West Line: cheap and simple
Board the MRT East-West Line at Changi Airport station and change at Tanah Merah (or Expo) for trains into the city. The trip takes about 30-45 minutes and costs about 2-2.5 SGD, the cheapest way into town.
There is no need to buy a ticket: tap a contactless bank card or phone wallet at the gates. The MRT is clean, punctual and reaches almost every sight. Public buses take the same card; tap on and off, and Google Maps routing is reliable.
Eating or drinking on the MRT is fined, and durians are banned on trains. Finish any airport snacks or drinks before you board.
Taxi or ride-hailing app: for luggage or late nights
With lots of luggage or a late-night arrival, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the easiest option. The ride takes about 20-30 minutes and costs about 25-40 SGD. An airport surcharge applies and fares vary by time of day.
Across the city, fares also surge at rush hour and in the rain, so the same trip can cost different amounts depending on when you ride. With heavy bags, going door to door without a transfer is the main advantage.
A taxi or ride-hailing app is also handy for Sentosa. By public transport, you reach Sentosa from the HarbourFront station area on the Sentosa Express monorail or the boardwalk.

Which option suits which area
Here are the five main hotel areas from our guide and what to consider when heading there from the airport. If you take the MRT, look up the station nearest your hotel before you fly.

- Marina Bay (first visit, views and luxury): home to Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. Marina Bay, Chinatown and Clarke Quay link on foot, but use underground mall passages to escape the midday heat
- Orchard Road (shopping, families): easy MRT access everywhere, so the MRT works well if you travel light. Families with lots of bags may prefer a taxi or ride-hailing app
- Chinatown (value, food): more affordable boutique hotels and close to Marina Bay. The MRT suits travelers keeping transport costs down
- Bugis / Kampong Glam (character, cafes): two MRT lines make it well connected
- Sentosa (resort stay, kids): a resort island with longer trips into the city. With lots of luggage, a taxi or ride-hailing app straight there is easier
Late-night arrivals and an arrival-day checklist
If you land late at night, a taxi or ride-hailing app is the easiest choice. Our guide does not list first and last MRT times, so check the official information before you fly. Keep in mind that the airport surcharge and time-of-day fares apply.
Sorting out the items below in advance saves time when you land.
- Submit the free SG Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival, and only on the official site; lookalike sites charge fees. Check entry requirements with the official source
- Have a contactless bank card or phone wallet ready for the MRT and buses
- Chewing gum may not be sold or brought in (check official exceptions), and vapes are illegal to possess, so leave them out of your bags
- Air-conditioning is strong indoors, so keep a light layer at hand. Tap water is safe to drink
- No eating or drinking on the MRT, and no durians on trains
Departure day: Jewel Changi and GST refunds
If you have time before your flight home, visit the Rain Vortex indoor waterfall at Jewel, linked to the terminals. Entry to the main area is free; allow about 1-2 hours. To get back to the airport, use the same options as on arrival (MRT or taxi/ride-hailing app).
Tourists can claim GST refunds at the airport on qualifying purchases made at participating stores. Check the official information for the conditions.
