How many days: the 4-day plan and where to stay
The Seattle guide puts the right length at 4 to 5 days, with national parks included. This plan uses 4 days: the waterfront on arrival day, Pike Place Market and Seattle Center on day 2, a Mount Rainier National Park day trip on day 3, and Ballard Locks plus a Bainbridge Island ferry before heading to the airport on the last day. With one more day, add the city's parks and historic core for a 5-day trip.
Pick your base to suit the route. On a first visit, Downtown & Pike Place is easiest: close to the market, waterfront and light rail, with many hotels. Belltown & Seattle Center puts you near the observation tower, parks and plenty of restaurants; Capitol Hill, with its light rail station, suits café and nightlife lovers; and the northern neighborhoods of Fremont & Ballard, with canals, parks and weekend markets, make for quieter stays.
The city is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes. Apart from the Mount Rainier day, light rail, buses, the monorail and ferries link the whole route.
Day 1: Link light rail to Downtown, a waterfront walk, seafood dinner
From Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Link light rail runs to Downtown stations without changes in about 40 minutes, for a flat fare of about US$3. With lots of luggage or a late arrival, take a taxi or a ride-hailing app car from the designated area in the airport garage: about 25-40 minutes to Downtown and about US$45-70 plus tip.
After check-in, walk the waterfront along the renewed promenade. End the day with seafood: clam chowder, a creamy clam soup, is about US$8-15, and Pacific salmon, the Northwest's signature fish grilled or smoked, is about US$30-45 as a restaurant dish. Many places charge market price for local oysters and Dungeness crab, so check first.
Day 2: Pike Place Market, the monorail to Seattle Center, Kerry Park at night
Start at Pike Place Market, a public market over 100 years old with fish stalls, flowers, produce and crafts, and quick bites; mornings are quieter. Seattle has a strong coffee culture and lots of neighborhood cafés, with a cup at about US$4-7.
Next, ride the monorail, which links Downtown and Seattle Center in minutes. Here you'll find the Space Needle, Seattle's iconic observation tower, plus the surrounding parks and cultural venues; it is best on clear days.
In the evening, head to Kerry Park viewpoint, a small park on Queen Anne Hill, for the night view. It is the classic spot to see the skyline and Mount Rainier in one view.
Day 3: Mount Rainier National Park day trip
Give day 3 to Mount Rainier National Park, a glaciated volcano known for its summer wildflower meadows, about 2-3 hours by car. The guide's plan is to go by tour or rental car.
A rental car is easiest for Mount Rainier, Olympic National Park and other day trips. Mountain roads may close seasonally, and national park entry and road closures vary by season, so check official information before you go.

Day 4: Ballard Locks and Fremont, a ferry to Bainbridge Island, then the airport
Spend the last morning at Ballard Locks in the north, canal locks where boats change water levels. From summer into early fall (roughly July-September, peaking around August), you can watch salmon climb the fish ladder. Then explore Fremont, a characterful neighborhood with canals, parks and weekend markets. Buses cover the whole city.
For lunch, try Seattle-style teriyaki, grilled chicken over rice with a sweet sauce (about US$12-18), a local everyday favorite.
In the afternoon, take a ferry from the waterfront terminal to Bainbridge Island for a last look at the city from the water. Link light rail reaches the airport from Downtown in about 40 minutes, so work backwards from your flight time when choosing a ferry.

One more day: stretching it to 5 days
With an extra day, spend day 4 in the city and do Ballard Locks, Fremont and the ferry on day 5 before heading to the airport. Add these sights from the guide.
If you have a rental car, a day trip to Olympic National Park is another option. Check official information on mountain road closures.

- Discovery Park: a large natural park in the city with forest trails, beaches and a lighthouse
- Pioneer Square: the historic core with brick buildings, where tours explore the old city underground
- Capitol Hill: a lively neighborhood of cafés, bars and live venues, with a light rail station
Before you go: getting around, budget and when to go
Link light rail runs north-south linking the airport, Downtown and the university district, and buses use the same transit card. Check official information on payment. The monorail links Downtown and Seattle Center, and ferries run from the waterfront terminal to Bainbridge Island and more.
Per person per day, budget about US$130-190 with a hostel, food halls and public transport, about US$300-450 with a city hotel, observation deck and restaurants, and about US$900 or more with a luxury hotel and private tours. Tipping is customary for restaurants, taxis and hotel services, usually about 15-20% of the bill at restaurants. Shelf prices often exclude sales tax, which is added at checkout.
June-September is the sunniest and driest, and the best time to go. According to NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) U.S. Climate Normals (Seattle–Tacoma International Airport station, 1991–2020), monthly rainfall in June-September is about 15-41 mm, and the average high in July and August is about 25°C.
October-April is often cloudy with frequent drizzle. By the same normals, monthly rainfall in this period is about 81-160 mm; of these months, November is the wettest at about 160 mm. December and January average highs of about 8-9°C and lows of about 3°C, cool with short days. A waterproof jacket beats an umbrella. Check entry requirements with official US government sources before you travel.
