How many days for Sanya? 4 to 5

Sanya is a tropical beach city at the southern tip of Hainan Island, China's southernmost province. It stays warm even in winter, so you can relax on beaches like Yalong Bay, Dadonghai and Sanya Bay, then take in the Luhuitou lookout, the boulder coast of Tianya Haijiao and Nanshan's 108 m Guanyin statue. It suits beach breaks and family trips.

The guide suggests 4 to 5 days. Day 1 covers Dadonghai and Luhuitou, day 2 Tianya Haijiao and Nanshan in the west, day 3 the water at Yalong Bay or Wuzhizhou Island, and on the last day you see a market downtown before heading to the airport.

Entry conditions, including visa-free stay periods, can change. Check official Chinese government or embassy information before you travel.

Airport to the city: airport bus, high-speed rail or taxi

From Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) you can reach downtown and the beach hotel areas by airport bus, high-speed rail, or taxi and ride-hailing. By car, Sanya Bay is about 15 minutes from the airport, Dadonghai about 25 and Yalong Bay about 30.

Airport Bus Line 1 boards opposite Gate 5 in the domestic arrivals hall. It runs past Sanya Bay and the downtown bus terminal to Dadonghai Beach and the Yalong Bay hotels. Line 2 leaves from the same place and takes the island ring expressway east to the Haitang Bay hotels, handy if you are staying near Wuzhizhou Island. Both cost up to about 25 CNY depending on distance; times and frequency can change, so check the airport's official information.

Phoenix Airport Station sits right next to the airport, linked to the terminal by a covered walkway, with trains to Sanya Station and toward Haikou. Buy tickets on 12306 (China Railway's official booking) with your passport, and check the official timetable and fares.

Taxis are metered and start at about 10-11 CNY including the first 2.5 km, with a 20% surcharge from 11 pm to 6 am.

Where to stay? Each bay has its own character

Sanya's places to stay differ from bay to bay. The guide's picks are Dadonghai, with its restaurants and shops, for a first visit; Sanya Bay, close to the airport; Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay for resort stays; and downtown for budget travel.

The guide's daily budget per person is about 300-400 CNY (downtown lodging, rice noodles, city buses), about 800-1,200 CNY (beach hotel, seafood restaurants, taxis, entry fees) or about 2,500 CNY+ (upscale beach resort, island trips, car with driver).

Getting around: city buses, tram, taxis and the tourist train

132 city bus routes cover Sanya. Fares are distance-based from about 2 CNY, mostly about 2-12 CNY, and buses run 06:00-23:00. Pay with the Sanya bus code in Alipay or WeChat, or in cash (have exact change).

The tram runs about 8.4 km with 15 stops from Jianguo Road downtown to Sanya Railway Station. The fare is about 3 CNY, paid by QR code (WeChat Pay, Alipay, UnionPay), ticket machine or cash on board.

Taxis are metered, and those showing the 'Hainan Trusted Pay' logo accept foreign credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) and Apple Pay. Ride-hailing apps let you enter destinations in English or Chinese and charge Alipay or WeChat Pay. The round-island high-speed railway reaches Haikou in about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, and within Sanya there are Sanya, Yalong Bay and Yazhou stations plus a tourist railway linking the city with Nanshan, Tianya Haijiao and Yazhou.

A 4-day route: beaches, the west coast sights and an island

Day 1: after checking in, spend the afternoon on Dadonghai beach, the main beach near downtown, with relatively calm water; it is a free, open beach. At dusk climb to the Luhuitou Scenic Area for views over Sanya Bay, Dadonghai and Yulin Bay, then have seafood for dinner. Check official information for Luhuitou's hours and fees.

Day 2: in the morning head to Tianya Haijiao, about 26 km west of the city, a coast of huge granite boulders carved with Qing-dynasty inscriptions. In the afternoon visit the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone with its 108 m Guanyin statue and Nanshan Temple; it is large, so allow at least half a day. Yazhou Ancient City, dating back to the Western Han dynasty, fits in too, and in the evening watch the sunset on the Sanya Bay palm promenade.

Day 3: a full beach day at Yalong Bay or a trip to Wuzhizhou Island, reached by speedboat from the pier; sailings may change in rough seas. Coconut chicken hot pot for dinner. Day 4: Hainan rice noodles for breakfast, a market stroll downtown, then the airport, leaving the city with plenty of time.

When is the best time to go?

November to April brings steady sunshine and clear water, the best time for beaches and swimming. Summer (June to August) is hot, with frequent short afternoon showers.

Typhoons may come in August and September and can halt island boats, trains and flights, so check the forecast often and keep your plans flexible. Spring Festival and the National Day holiday (around October 1) are very crowded at sights and hotels.

The sun is strong all year. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, rest in the shade at midday and drink water often.

Before you go: payments, connectivity and safety

Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China, so sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a Chinese map app before you go.

Foreigners can register Alipay and WeChat Pay with an overseas phone number and link foreign cards such as Visa or Mastercard. Set them up before you travel, and carry some cash too.

Swim only in designated swimming areas with lifeguards, and follow warning flags and local instructions. Never swim after drinking or at night. Choose seafood where prices are marked, and confirm the unit price and cooking fee before ordering. Train tickets and some sight reservations need your passport.
