From Jiaodong Airport (TAO) to the city: metro, bus or taxi

This post covers getting from Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) into the city. The airport is a long way north of the city, so whichever option you pick, allow plenty of time. There are three main options. Metro Line 8, fully opened in September 2026, runs from the airport to May Fourth Square with no change; airport buses run to major parts of the city; and taxis leave from the official taxi rank, or you can book a ride-hailing car.

When you book, first check that the arrival airport on your ticket is Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO). Below we go through the metro, buses and taxis, then the areas to stay, an at-a-glance comparison, and checklists for arrival day and departure day.

Metro Line 8: to May Fourth Square with no change

Metro Line 8 fully opened in September 2026. From the airport station it runs to May Fourth Square station with no change. Limited-stop express trains take from about 40 minutes to May Fourth Square; regular trains take longer.

Express trains run only at set times. Check the official information before you go to see whether express trains run when you land and what the fare is. Every Qingdao metro station has bag checks, so allow extra time.

You can ride the metro and buses with a transit QR code inside a mobile payment app, or buy a single ticket with cash. Foreigners can link overseas cards to the mobile payment apps, so sign up and verify before you travel.

Airport bus: to major parts of the city for about 25-30 CNY

Airport buses run to major parts of the city. The ride takes about 60-90 minutes and costs about 25-30 CNY.

Check routes and times at the airport. Look up the way from your stop to your accommodation address before you fly and you will spend less time working it out at the airport.

Taxi or ride-hailing: the official rank and a metered fare

Take a taxi from the official taxi rank at the airport, or book a ride-hailing car inside a mobile payment app. The ride takes about 50-60 minutes to the city.

Taxis are metered, and it is a long ride. Check the fare in the official information before you go. Have your hotel address in Chinese; showing your destination in Chinese helps.

What to know about each area to stay

Here are five areas to stay in Qingdao, with the getting-around details that matter when you come in from the airport. If you are heading to a station other than May Fourth Square, check where to change and the route in the official information before you go.

At a glance

Here is a quick summary. For items marked "check official", confirm them with official sources before you go.

Arrival-day and departure-day checklist

Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China, and mobile payment is more common than cash. Before you go, sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a Chinese map app, and sign up and verify with a mobile payment app.

On departure day, remember first that the airport is far from the city. Allow plenty of time, and if you take the metro, add time for the bag checks at every station. For how to spend your days in Qingdao, see the 3-day route below.
