How many days? The 3-day plan and where to stay
Qingdao is a seaside city that needs 3 to 4 days. This plan uses 3 days (2 nights): arrive and walk Zhanqiao Pier and the old town on day 1, see Signal Hill Park and the cathedral and then follow the coast to Badaguan and May Fourth Square on day 2, and visit the beer museum before heading to the airport on day 3. A 4-day version with a beach or Laoshan comes later.
For a first visit, the old town (around Zhanqiao and Zhongshan Road) is the easiest base: the historic center with European-style buildings, the cathedral and the pier, with sights within walking distance. Around Badaguan suits quiet walks and beaches, with tree-lined streets of old villas, while around May Fourth Square, the modern district of towers and malls, suits night views and shopping and has easy metro access.
If beer and seafood dinners are the point, there is also the area around Beer Street, near the beer museum and lively in the evening. The Laoshan side (east) is a quiet area where mountains meet the sea, but it is 40+ minutes by car from the center, so weigh the travel time on a short trip.

- Day 1: airport, check in, Zhanqiao Pier and the old town, seafood and draft beer
- Day 2: Signal Hill Park, St. Michael's Cathedral, Badaguan walk, May Fourth Square at night
- Day 3: fish dumplings for breakfast, Tsingtao Beer Museum, souvenirs, the airport
Day 1: Airport to the city, Zhanqiao Pier and the old town
Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) is a long way north of the city. Since Metro Line 8 fully opened in September 2026, it runs from the airport to May Fourth Square with no change. Limited-stop express trains run only at set times, so check official information for times and fares.
Airport buses run to major parts of the city; check routes and times at the airport. For a taxi, use the official taxi rank, or book a ride-hailing car inside Alipay. Either way, have your hotel address in Chinese.
After check-in, walk Zhanqiao Pier and the old town. The long pier with a pavilion at its end is Qingdao's symbol and is lovely at sunset. Finish with seafood and draft beer. You pick clams, prawns and crab by weight to be cooked, so always confirm the price per jin (500 g) and cooking fees before ordering. Spicy stir-fried clams, cooked with chili and garlic, are Qingdao's classic beer snack.
- Metro Line 8: from about 40 minutes to May Fourth Square by express train (longer on regular trains); check official fares
- Airport bus: about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to the city, about 25-30 CNY
- Taxi or ride-hailing: about 50 minutes to 1 hour to the city, metered (a long ride; check official info)
Day 2: Signal Hill Park, the cathedral, Badaguan and May Fourth Square
Start the morning at Signal Hill Park, a hilltop lookout over the red roofs of the old town and the sea. Then see St. Michael's Cathedral, the red-brick church with twin spires that is the old town's landmark; check official information for interior visiting hours.
In the afternoon, stroll the Badaguan scenic area, a walk past old villas in many architectural styles with plenty of photo spots. A seaside path runs from Zhanqiao Pier to Badaguan and May Fourth Square; it is hilly in places, so wear comfortable shoes.
At dusk, head to May Fourth Square, where the waterfront skyline lights up at night. Lighting hours may vary. Metro lines connect the old town, May Fourth Square and the coast, so getting back to your hotel is easy.
Day 3: Dumpling breakfast, the beer museum, the airport
Squeezing the guide's 4-day plan into 3 days, the last day is breakfast, the beer museum and souvenirs. Start with fish dumplings, boiled dumplings filled with fish such as mackerel, a Shandong specialty.
Tsingtao Beer Museum sits in the old brewery buildings, with beer history and tastings; check official information for hours and tickets. Nearby Beer Street has lanes of draft-beer and seafood restaurants, and in the lanes near the brewery fresh draft beer is cheap. Seeing it sold in plastic bags is a very Qingdao sight.
Pick up souvenirs, then go to the airport. It is far from the city, so allow plenty of time on departure day: as in the guide's plan, leave town at least 1 hour 30 minutes ahead, and add time for the bag checks at every metro station.
One more day: stretch it to 4 days with a beach or Laoshan
The guide's 4-day plan spends day 3 on the beer museum, then a beach or Laoshan in the afternoon and lamb skewers for dinner, and day 4 on a dumpling breakfast and souvenirs before the airport. Move the beer museum from the 3-day plan to this day and keep the last day light.
Several city beaches are close to town. They are very crowded in summer; swim only in lifeguarded zones.
Laoshan is a scenic mountain by the sea with old Taoist temples. It is far from the city, so allow a day; the guide notes you can make Laoshan a full day. The Laoshan side is 40+ minutes by car from the center, and tickets and shuttles should be checked officially. In the evening, try cumin-spiced grilled lamb skewers, common on evening streets.

Before you go: transport, payment, budget and when to go
Transit QR codes inside Alipay or WeChat Pay work on the metro and buses, and you can also buy single tickets with cash. Taxis use meters, and ride-hailing can be booked inside Alipay; showing your destination in Chinese helps. Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China, so sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a Chinese map app before you go, and sign up and verify Alipay and WeChat Pay before you travel.
Budget per person per day: about 300 CNY (guesthouse, local food, metro), about 600-900 CNY (city hotel, seafood restaurants, entry fees), or about 1,500 CNY+ (sea-view upscale hotel, car with driver).
May-June and September-October are mild and clear, the best time. Using 1991–2020 normals for Qingdao station from the China Meteorological Administration submission to the WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI), average highs and lows are 21°C/14°C in May, 24°C/19°C in June, 26°C/20°C in September and 20°C/14°C in October. July and August are crowded with beachgoers, and hotels fill fast during the summer beer festival. July and August are rainy months, with normals of about 159 mm and 160 mm. Spring can bring sea fog or dust, and winter sea winds are cold (January averages a high of 3°C and a low of -2°C). National Day week (around October 1) is very crowded.
- Some sights need advance booking under your passport name, and you must show your passport on entry
- There are security checks at every metro station and major sight; do not carry lighters or knives
- Confirm the seafood unit price and cooking fees before ordering
- Visa rules change often; check official information for the latest rules before you travel
