Okinawa vs Ishigaki: Which Should You Choose for a First Trip?

Road-trip Okinawa or island-hopping Ishigaki? Airport transfers, days and budget, March-May and October-November weather, and sights compared.
Published · Updated
The short answer
Okinawa is Japan's southern island destination, known for emerald seas and a laid-back pace. Outside Naha the sights are spread across the island, so most visitors rent a car, and many highlights such as Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island and Cape Manzamo link up as a road trip. It is especially good for families and beach holidays.
Ishigaki is the main island of the Yaeyama Islands, about 410 km southwest of Naha on Okinawa Island. It is known for coral seas, Kabira Bay (a national Place of Scenic Beauty) and star-filled night skies, and ferries to Taketomi and Iriomote leave from the island port terminal in town.
Best for: Okinawa suits travelers who want to drive between an aquarium, resort coasts and shopping streets, and family resort stays. Ishigaki suits island hopping by boat and nature-first trips built around snorkeling and stargazing.

Getting there and from the airport to your hotel
Okinawa's gateway is Naha Airport. If you stay in Naha, the Yui Rail monorail runs from Naha Airport Station to stations near Kokusai-dori (Kencho-mae, Makishi) in about 13-16 minutes for about 300 yen. A taxi to central Naha takes about 15 minutes, and airport limousine buses to the northern resorts take over an hour. Rental cars are picked up at offices near the airport after a shuttle of about 10-20 minutes; offices get busy in peak season, so book ahead.
Ishigaki is about 410 km southwest of Naha. From Ishigaki's airport, buses to the port terminal and bus terminal in town take about 45 minutes and cost JPY 550 one way (airport-port terminal return ticket JPY 1,000). Pay in cash or by contactless credit card; transport IC cards are not accepted.
Bus route 14, still listed on the Ishigaki airport site, is suspended from 1 October 2026. A taxi to the port terminal takes about 25 minutes and costs about JPY 3,500, and with a rental car Kabira Bay is about 30 minutes from the airport.
How many days, and what budget?
Plan on 4 to 5 days for Okinawa (rental car recommended) and 3 to 4 days for Ishigaki (including island day trips). In Okinawa, the Motobu Peninsula in the north is about two hours' drive from the airport, so a night or two there is a good idea. On Ishigaki, most of the island is within an hour's drive.
Budgets are hard to compare like for like: Okinawa is shown as daily budgets per person, and Ishigaki as item prices for transport, island trips and taxis. So neither can simply be called cheaper. Hotel costs on Ishigaki vary by date, so check them on booking sites.
- Okinawa per day: budget about 7,000-9,000 yen, mid-range about 18,000-24,000 yen (including a shared rental car), high-end about 45,000 yen+
- Ishigaki transport: airport-port terminal bus JPY 550 one way, 24-hour bus pass JPY 1,000, 3-day pass JPY 2,000
- Ishigaki island trips: Taketomi return JPY 1,880, Iriomote return JPY 4,880 to Ohara Port or JPY 6,370 to Uehara Port (fuel surcharge included, may change)
- Ishigaki taxi: airport to Kabira Park about 40 min, about JPY 5,600
March-May and October-November weather side by side
These are Japan Meteorological Agency normals for 1991–2020: Naha station for Okinawa and Ishigakijima station for Ishigaki, rounded to whole numbers. We compare the same months, March-May and October-November, which are warm but comfortable.
In the same month, Ishigaki's daytime highs are 1-2°C warmer. Ishigaki's beaches open in March, the earliest in Japan. Both places get more rain in May than in March-April. Okinawa's rainy season runs from mid-May to June, while Ishigaki's starts early and ends around early June.
If the sea is your main goal, summer is an option too. On Ishigaki, July-August brings the most beautiful seas, but typhoons often approach from late June to October, peaking in September-October. In Okinawa, July-September has great seas but frequent typhoons that can cancel flights and ferries, so keep your plans flexible then.
- March: Okinawa high 22°C, low 17°C, rain 143 mm / Ishigaki high 24°C, low 19°C, rain 134 mm
- April: Okinawa 24°C, 19°C, 161 mm / Ishigaki 26°C, 21°C, 147 mm
- May: Okinawa 27°C, 22°C, 245 mm / Ishigaki 29°C, 24°C, 191 mm
- October: Okinawa 28°C, 24°C, 179 mm / Ishigaki 29°C, 24°C, 211 mm
- November: Okinawa 25°C, 20°C, 119 mm / Ishigaki 26°C, 22°C, 138 mm
What you do there
In Okinawa you string sights together by car. Churaumi Aquarium on the Motobu Peninsula is famous for whale sharks and manta rays in a huge tank, and nearby Kouri Bridge makes the drive over the sea a highlight in itself. Cape Manzamo, a cliff shaped like an elephant's trunk, is near the Onna resort coast, and in the south lies Sefa-utaki, a UNESCO World Heritage site considered the Ryukyu Kingdom's most sacred place.
In Naha, walk Kokusai-dori, about 1.6 km of shops and restaurants, and visit Shuri Castle Park. The castle has been rebuilt after a 2019 fire; the main hall is scheduled to open to the public from November 23, 2026, with advance reservations for the interior. Check the official site for what's open. The Kerama Islands, reached by ferry from Naha port, have exceptionally clear water for snorkeling.
Ishigaki is all about the sea and nearby islands. Swimming is not allowed in Kabira Bay because of black pearl farming, so see it from a glass-bottom boat or the lookout at Kabira Park. Tamatorizaki Observatory in the northeast looks over the Hirakubo Peninsula and the coral-reef sea. From the port terminal, high-speed boats reach Taketomi, with its red-tiled village, in 10-15 minutes, and Iriomote, over 90% jungle, in 35-40 minutes to Ohara Port or 40-50 minutes to Uehara Port. At night, Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, the first place in Japan recognized as a Dark Sky Place, offers starry skies.

How to choose: combining both and checks before you go
Choose Okinawa if you want to drive between an aquarium, resorts and shopping streets, and Ishigaki if you want to hop between islands by boat and enjoy the sea and starry skies. Without a car, base yourself in Naha on the Yui Rail line in Okinawa, or in Ishigaki's town center near the port terminal, where ferries and route buses all start.
To combine both, check flights with the airlines. Typhoons cancel flights and ferries, and high waves can extend cancellations after a typhoon passes, so be careful with island trips just before your flight home.
Entry rules can change, so check official information before you travel.
- Driving: Japan drives on the left, and foreign licenses usually require an International Driving Permit; check official rules before you go
- On Ishigaki, crested serpent eagles keep getting hit by cars, so drive slowly
- From stays on 1 February 2027, an accommodation tax applies at all lodgings in Okinawa Prefecture (2% of the room rate per person per night, up to JPY 2,000)
- Japan's tax-free shopping switches to a pay-first, refund-at-departure system from November 2026; check official information
- Ishigaki route buses don't take transport IC cards, and counters at small island ports such as Taketomi take cash only
- The Yonehara coast and Iriomote's beaches have no lifeguards or jellyfish nets. Snorkel in pairs
