The guide's 4-day rental car route: the south and Sefa-utaki, Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island, Cape Manzamo and American Village, then Shuri Castle Park.

How many days does Okinawa need? The 4-day picture
The guide recommends 4 to 5 days for Okinawa, with a rental car. Outside Naha the sights are spread across the island, so a car makes it much easier to link several in one day. This plan follows the guide's 4-day itinerary: Day 1 the south and Naha, Day 2 the aquarium and Kouri Island up north, Day 3 Cape Manzamo and the west coast, Day 4 Shuri Castle Park and the airport.
Splitting your stay along the route keeps things easy. The guide's route spends the first night around Kokusai-dori in Naha, close to the airport and on the monorail, and the second on the Motobu Peninsula, near Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island, or on the Onna resort coast. Motobu is about two hours' drive from the airport, so the guide suggests a night or two there.
Chatan (American Village), halfway between Naha and the north, is a handy base for a road trip, and the south around Nanjo has fewer tourists and is fairly close to the airport. For family resort stays, the Onna coast has many hotels with pools and their own beaches.
Day 1: Pick up the car, southern sea views and Sefa-utaki, Kokusai-dori
From Naha Airport, take a shuttle bus to a rental office nearby and pick up your car. The shuttle takes about 10-20 minutes, and offices get busy in peak season, so book ahead. Rental prices vary by company, car and season.
Head first to the south, which is close to the airport. The area around Nanjo has fewer tourists, seaside cafés and sacred sites, good for quiet sea views. Stop at Sefa-utaki, a UNESCO World Heritage site considered the Ryukyu Kingdom's most sacred place. It is a place of worship, so visit quietly.
In the evening, return to Naha and walk Kokusai-dori, about 1.6 km of souvenir shops and restaurants, with a market lane for local food nearby. Okinawa soba is about 700-1,000 yen a bowl and taco rice about 600-1,000 yen. Some small eateries and markets are cash only.
Day 2: Drive north to Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island
Day two heads north. In the morning, visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Okinawa's top attraction, famous for whale sharks and manta rays in a huge tank. Early morning or late afternoon is less crowded.
In the afternoon, go to Kouri Island. Driving across the long Kouri Bridge over the sea is a highlight in itself, and the island's beaches are especially clear. Jellyfish can appear in summer, so swim inside the netted areas and follow posted signs. The sun is intense, so bring sunscreen, a hat and a rash guard.
Stay the night in Motobu or Onna. The Motobu Peninsula is about two hours' drive from the airport, so the guide's route spends the night up north instead of driving back to Naha.

Day 3: Cape Manzamo, beach time, sunset at American Village
In the morning, stop at Cape Manzamo, a coastal cliff shaped like an elephant's trunk. It is beautiful at sunset, but the guide's route visits in the morning and leaves the afternoon free for rest.
Spend the afternoon at the beach or your resort. The Onna coast is a west-coast strip of beach resorts, many with pools and their own beaches, near Cape Manzamo.
Around sunset, head to American Village in Chatan, an American-style shopping area with a Ferris wheel and a seaside sunset promenade. Chatan sits halfway between Naha and the north, which makes it a handy base for a road trip.

Day 4: Shuri Castle Park, refuel and return the car, the airport
On the last morning, visit Shuri Castle Park, the former castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom, rebuilt after a 2019 fire. The main hall is scheduled to open to the public from November 23, 2026, with advance reservations for the interior. Check the official site for what's open.
Most rentals must be returned with a full tank, so refuel before heading to the office, then go on to the airport. Japan drives on the left; take extra care at roundabouts and right turns.
If you plan to shop for souvenirs, note that Japan's tax-free shopping switches to a pay-first, refund-at-departure system from November 2026, so check official information.

A +1 day option (5 days) and going without a car
With a fifth day, add a day trip to the Kerama Islands. They are reached by ferry from Naha port, with exceptionally clear water for snorkeling. Boats may not run in bad weather, so keep your plans flexible.
If you want more time up north, spend two nights on the Motobu Peninsula. The guide suggests a night or two there.
If you would rather not drive, stay around Kokusai-dori in Naha, which the guide names as the fit for first visits and car-free trips. The Yui Rail links the airport, central Naha and Shuri, and for the northern sights, bus tours that bundle them are easier than the infrequent local buses. Our car-free Okinawa post, linked below, covers this in detail.
- +1 day option 1: day trip by ferry from Naha port to the Kerama Islands (sailings can be cancelled in bad weather)
- +1 day option 2: two nights on the Motobu Peninsula for a slower pace up north
- Without a car: stay around Kokusai-dori + Yui Rail + a bus tour north
Before you go: getting around, budget and when to visit
A rental car is the standard way to explore Okinawa. Japan drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right. Most foreign drivers need an International Driving Permit alongside their home license and passport; check the rules for your country before you go. Taxis are convenient for short hops in Naha, but long rides north get expensive. IC cards work on the Yui Rail.
The guide's daily budgets are about 7,000-9,000 yen (guesthouse, monorail, buses), about 18,000-24,000 yen (hotel, restaurants, shared rental car) and about 45,000 yen+ (beach resort, agu pork dinners). Agu pork, Okinawa's native breed, runs about 3,000-6,000 yen per person.
March-May and October-November are warm but comfortable. Japan Meteorological Agency normals for Naha station (1991–2020) put average highs at about 22°C in March, 27°C in May, 28°C in October and 25°C in November. Mid-May to June is the rainy season, with normal rainfall of about 245 mm in May and 284 mm in June. July-September is peak summer (highs about 31-32°C) with great seas but frequent typhoons that can cancel flights and ferries. Winter (December-February), with highs of about 20-22°C, is too cool for swimming but fine for sightseeing.
- Pack your International Driving Permit, passport and home license
- Book a rental car early for peak season
- July-September typhoons: consider travel insurance and turn on airline alerts
- Check entry requirements with official sources before you travel
