Niigata vs Kanazawa: Which Should You Choose?

Riverside port city Niigata or Kanazawa with its gardens and old streets? Airport transfers, days and budgets, and same-month weather compared.
Published · Updated
The short answer
Niigata is a port city on the Sea of Japan and the terminus of the Joetsu Shinkansen. It sits where the Shinano and Agano rivers flow into the sea, so it is called the "City of Water", and in the Edo period it prospered as a major port of call for the Kitamaebune trading ships. It is known for the stone-arched Bandai Bridge (1929), Sea of Japan seafood, Koshihikari rice and sake, and ferries from Niigata Port to Sado Island.
Kanazawa, in Japan's Hokuriku region, preserves old teahouse streets, samurai residences and Kenrokuen, counted among Japan's three great gardens. It's also known for fresh Sea of Japan seafood and gold-leaf crafts.
Best for: Niigata suits travelers who want an easy riverside trip of bridges, an observation room and markets, with the option of a ferry to Sado Island. Kanazawa suits those who want garden walks, old teahouse and samurai streets, market seafood and a Shirakawa-go day trip.
Getting there and airport to city
From Niigata Airport, the limousine bus takes about 25 minutes to Niigata Station for JPY 470. You pay when you board, in cash or with a transit IC card, but JPY 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 notes cannot be changed on the bus. Route bus E22 runs from the same stop via Bandai (about 33 minutes, JPY 470), and a taxi takes about 25 minutes to Niigata Station.
If Sado Island comes first, a 13-seat mini liner runs from the airport to Niigata Port (about 25 minutes, JPY 1,000, cash only). You may not get on if it is full, and the published timetable runs only to 30 December 2026, so check the airport's official site for later dates.
Kanazawa's air gateway is Komatsu Airport (KMQ) in neighboring Komatsu city, with buses to Kanazawa Station timed to arrivals (about 40 minutes, about ¥1,200-1,400). From Kansai Airport (KIX), limited express trains via Shin-Osaka (or Kyoto) and Tsuruga connect to the Hokuriku Shinkansen, about 3-4 hours in all. Via Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen takes about 2 hours 30 min to 3 hours from Tokyo Station to Kanazawa, while Niigata Station is the terminus of the Joetsu Shinkansen. Check flight schedules with the airlines.

How many days and what budget
Plan on 2 days for Niigata city (3 days or more with Sado Island) and 3 days for Kanazawa (4 with Shirakawa-go).
In Niigata, day one takes the limousine bus to Niigata Station, a walk to Bandai Bridge (about 15 minutes), a seafood lunch at Pia Bandai and the Toki Messe 31st-floor observation room. On day two, a sightseeing loop bus 1-day ticket covers the Former Saito Family Villa and Marinepia Nihonkai, followed by a walk around Furumachi and Honcho. In Kanazawa, day one is Omicho Market and Higashi Chaya, day two Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle Park, the 21st Century Museum and the Nagamachi Samurai District, and day three a Shirakawa-go day trip.
Budgets work differently in each city. For Niigata, add up item prices, and since accommodation and meals vary by date, check booking sites; for Kanazawa, think in per-person daily totals. For a like-for-like view, a Japan Tourism Agency survey (2025) found that foreign leisure travellers spent an average of about ¥74,000 per person per visit in Niigata Prefecture and about ¥48,000 in Ishikawa Prefecture (excluding travel between prefectures). The Niigata figure is the average for all of Niigata Prefecture, not just this city, and actual costs vary widely with itinerary and accommodation.
- Niigata basics: airport limousine bus JPY 470, sightseeing loop bus 1-day ticket JPY 500, Bandai Bridge and the Toki Messe observation room free, Former Saito Family Villa JPY 300

- Kanazawa high-end: about ¥55,000+ per person per day (ryokan, kaiseki dining)
Weather by month, side by side
The best times differ slightly. Niigata is good for walking in April–May, and September–October brings average highs of about 21–26°C. Kanazawa is most beautiful with April cherry blossoms and October-November autumn colors. So April, May, September, October and November are shown side by side.
These are 1991–2020 normals: Japan Meteorological Agency Niigata station for Niigata and Japan Meteorological Agency Kanazawa station for Kanazawa, shown as average high / average low / monthly rainfall.
In all five months, Kanazawa's average highs and lows are 1-2°C higher than Niigata's, and its rainfall is higher than Niigata's too. In both cities, April and May get less rain than September-November, and November gets far more rain than April and May.
In Niigata, July–August is hot, with average highs of about 29–31°C, and December–February is cold, with average highs of about 5–9°C and lows of about 0–2°C. What to do: sights, food and getting around
Niigata starts at Bandai Bridge, about 15 minutes on foot from the Bandai exit of Niigata Station. The third bridge on the site, it is a stone arch bridge built in 1929 with six arches, and an Important Cultural Property since 2004. Nearby Pia Bandai is a market of Sea of Japan fish, rice and sake (free entry), and from the Toki Messe 31st-floor observation room (about 125 m up, free), about 17 minutes by bus, you can see as far as Sado Island on clear days.
The Former Saito Family Villa, built in 1918, is a national Place of Scenic Beauty whose stroll garden on the slope of a sand dune is viewed from the rooms (JPY 300, closed Mondays). Marinepia Nihonkai is an aquarium with about 600 species and daily dolphin shows, and the Northern Culture Museum is the former mansion of the Ito family, great landowners of Echigo. Sado Island is about 1 hour 7 minutes from Niigata Port by jetfoil; at the Sado Gold Mine, part of a World Cultural Heritage site since 2024, you can see Edo-period tunnels and Doyu no Warito. The main building of the Niigata City History Museum (Minatopia) is closed from 1 September 2026 until the end of May 2027 (planned); the former customs house stays open.
Kanazawa centers on Kenrokuen, counted among Japan's three great gardens, and Kanazawa Castle Park right next to it. Kenrokuen is quieter early in the morning, and in winter ropes (yukitsuri) protect its trees from snow. Higashi Chaya with its wooden-latticed teahouses, Omicho Market with over 300 years of history, the round glass 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nagamachi Samurai District with earthen walls and canals are the other classics. Myoryuji (Ninja Temple) is open only by guided tour with advance phone reservation, and most highway buses to Shirakawa-go need booking.

- Niigata food: tare-katsudon (no egg), Sea of Japan seafood such as nodoguro and nanban ebi, hegi soba, wappa-meshi, noppe, sasa dango
- Kanazawa food: Omicho Market seafood bowls (about ¥2,000-4,000), nodoguro, Kanazawa curry (about ¥800-1,200), Kanazawa oden, especially popular in winter (about ¥150-600 per piece), gold-leaf ice cream
- Niigata transport: sightseeing loop bus JPY 260 per adult ride, 1-day ticket JPY 500 (it holds 35 people, so when full you may have to wait for the next bus)
- Kanazawa transport: frequent city buses link the station and main sights, and every bike-share bike is electric-assisted, so slopes are easy
