How many days for Kanazawa? 3, or 4 with Shirakawa-go

Kanazawa, in Japan's Hokuriku region, preserves old teahouse streets, samurai residences and Kenrokuen, counted among Japan's three great gardens. It's also known for fresh Sea of Japan seafood and gold-leaf crafts. The guide suggests 3 days, or 4 if you add a day trip to the thatched-roof village of Shirakawa-go.

Spend the first day on Omicho Market and Higashi Chaya, and the second on Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle Park, the 21st Century Museum and the Nagamachi Samurai District. Go to Shirakawa-go on the third day, and on the fourth visit Myoryuji before heading to the airport.

Airport to the city: Komatsu bus, Kansai Airport, or the Shinkansen from Tokyo

Kanazawa's air gateway is Komatsu Airport (KMQ) in neighboring Komatsu city. It's the closest airport to Kanazawa, with airport buses to Kanazawa Station timed to arrivals. The ride takes about 40 minutes and costs about ¥1,200-1,400. Check official transport information for timetables and fares.

If you fly into Kansai Airport (KIX), which has many international flights, take the Haruka to Shin-Osaka (or Kyoto), the Thunderbird to Tsuruga, then change to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for Kanazawa. It takes about 3-4 hours; check official routes and fares.

If you're coming via Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen runs straight from Tokyo Station to Kanazawa Station in about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, for about ¥14,000-15,000. Shinkansen, airport buses and city buses all stop at Kanazawa Station, so it makes an easy base for your trip.

Getting around: walking, city buses, bike share and taxis

You can walk from Kanazawa Station to Omicho Market, Higashi Chaya and Kenrokuen, though the distances add up. Wear comfortable shoes.

Frequent city buses link the station and the main sights. If you'll ride several times a day, compare passes such as day passes and check the official information. Bike-share docks are all over town, and every bike is electric-assisted, so slopes are easy.

Taxis are handy when you have luggage or on rainy and snowy days; board at the station rank.

Where to stay: neighborhoods and a daily budget

For a first visit, the area around Kanazawa Station is convenient: Shinkansen, airport buses and city buses all stop here, and there are many hotels. For evenings out, Korinbo and Katamachi form the downtown hub with plenty of restaurants and bars, and you can walk to Kenrokuen.

For old-town atmosphere, the area around Higashi Chaya has stays in restored traditional houses and is quiet in the evening. The Kenrokuen and castle area brings the garden, castle park and museums close together, lovely for early-morning walks.

Per person per day, budget about ¥9,000-13,000 with a business hotel, market food and buses; about ¥20,000-30,000 with a nicer hotel, restaurants and admissions; and about ¥55,000 or more for a ryokan and kaiseki dining.

When to go: April blossoms, October-November colors

Kanazawa is at its most beautiful during cherry blossom season in April and autumn colors in October-November. Winter brings frequent snow, but also snowy scenery and winter seafood, and at Kenrokuen you can see the ropes (yukitsuri) that protect trees from snow. Summers are hot and humid.

Normal temperatures are a high of 17°C and a low of 8°C in April, 22°C and 14°C in October, and 16°C and 8°C in November. August is the hottest at 31°C and 24°C, and January sits at 7°C and 1°C. December is the wettest month at 301mm, with January at 256mm and November at 251mm; even the driest month, May, gets 138mm, so keep an umbrella with you.

Climate figures are 1991–2020 normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency's Kanazawa station.

Good to know: bookings, mornings, etiquette and entry

Myoryuji (the Ninja Temple) is full of hidden stairs and traps, and visits are by guided tour with advance phone reservation only. Most highway buses to Shirakawa-go also require reservations. Check official information for both and book ahead.

Kenrokuen and Omicho Market are quieter in the morning. Omicho Market, with over 300 years of history, has most stalls open in the morning, and some close early in the afternoon. The 21st Century Museum has free areas and paid exhibitions, and popular works can have queues. In the old teahouse districts, respect notices about private property and photography.

Rain and snow are frequent, so carry an umbrella and wear non-slip shoes in winter. Check official Japanese government information on entry procedures (such as online registration) before you travel.
