When to Visit Kunming: Seasons, Packing and a Stone Forest Day
When to go to Kunming (winter gulls, the Torch Festival, holiday crowds), how to pack without guessing the weather, and a Stone Forest day trip plan.

Published
Kunming works in any season
Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province in southwest China, a highland city nicknamed the 'Spring City'. The Stone Forest's official site describes a spring-like, mild climate all year, so any season works.
So rather than asking when to go, pick by what each season offers. The guide suggests 2 to 3 days.
Our guide has no weather figures such as monthly temperatures. Instead of numbers, this post covers what to see by season, what to pack, and how to plan a Stone Forest day.
- By season: winter gulls, spring wild greens, the Torch Festival
- Packing: start with the forecast
- Day 1: a Stone Forest day trip
- Day 2: Dragon Gate in the Western Hills and the Haigeng lakeshore
What each season offers
In winter, black-headed gulls arrive from Siberia and stay around Haigeng Dam and Haigeng Park on Dianchi Lake. Haigeng Dam is a 2.4 km embankment along Caohai, facing the Western Hills across the water.
Spring brings shanmao yecai, a spring-only Shilin feast of wild greens and edible flowers, served stir-fried, dressed cold, in clear soup or in omelets.
The Yi people's traditional Torch Festival at the Stone Forest falls on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month each year. Because it follows the lunar calendar, the Western date changes each year, so check before you go. Sights can be crowded during Spring Festival and National Day holidays, so plan with some slack.
- Winter: black-headed gulls at Haigeng Dam and Haigeng Park
- Spring: shanmao yecai (spring wild greens and flowers) in Shilin
- 6th lunar month, 24th day: the Yi Torch Festival at the Stone Forest
- Spring Festival and National Day: possible crowds, allow extra time
What to wear and pack: check the forecast first
The guide gives no weather figures such as temperature or rainfall. The only description is the official 'mild, spring-like all year', so check the forecast before you go and pack for it.
Treat the clothing tips here as general suggestions only. The Stone Forest is walked on stone paths between the rocks, and Naigu Stone Forest has over 6 km of them, so comfortable walking shoes help. If you plan to watch the gulls at Haigeng Dam in winter, check that day's lakeside forecast too.
Foreign visitors claiming a Stone Forest reduction must show original documents at an on-site ticket point, so bring your passport. Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China: sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.), a Chinese map app, and Alipay or WeChat Pay before you travel, and carry a little cash.
- Check the forecast before you go (the guide has no temperatures)
- Comfortable walking shoes (Stone Forest paths)
- Passport (original documents for Stone Forest reductions)
- Connection, a Chinese map app, Alipay/WeChat Pay, a little cash
