The short answer

Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year, so pack summer clothes even for the holidays. On average, December reaches 32°C by day and 24°C in the morning, and January 33°C and 24°C.

Tourism Malaysia's events listing shows 'Christmas Celebration' on 25 December 2026 as a nationwide event, noting lights, decorations and festive displays in most shopping malls. New Year countdown and fireworks plans are announced by the official sites, so check before you go.

December and January weather at a glance

These are rounded 1991–2020 normals for Subang station (Kuala Lumpur), from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI). Average high / average low / monthly rainfall.

Both months reach 32-33°C by day and 24°C in the morning, so they feel almost the same. Monthly rainfall is 281mm in December and 227mm in January, so December gets more.

What to wear

With highs of 32-33°C and mornings around 24°C, light, breathable short-sleeved clothes are the base. Afternoon downpours come on many days, so carry a small umbrella and plan outdoor sights for the morning.

At religious sites such as the National Mosque and Batu Caves, cover your shoulders and knees, so pack light long trousers or a long skirt and a shawl. The National Mosque sometimes lends covering garments at the entrance.

Year-end events and sight hours

Tourism Malaysia says most shopping malls are decked out with lights and decorations for Christmas on 25 December 2026. New Year countdown and fireworks dates and venues are announced by the official sites, so check before you go. The Islamic Arts Museum's special exhibition 'Tatreez: Reclaiming Palestine Through Embroidery' runs from 19 June 2026 to 25 April 2027, so it is open over the holidays.

According to Tourism Malaysia (information as of June 2026), the Petronas Twin Towers Skybridge and Observation Deck open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 am to 9 pm, and close on Mondays except public holidays. It advises booking on the official website before you arrive, noting that same-day slots disappear fast, especially on weekends.

The same source lists National Mosque visiting hours as Saturday to Thursday 9 am-12 pm, 3-4 pm and 5:30-6:30 pm, and Friday 3-4 pm and 5:30-6:30 pm. Jalan Alor food street stalls open from about 5 pm until late, but most stalls are closed on Mondays. Holiday hours can change, so check each sight's official information before you go.
