The short answer
Hanoi is Vietnam's thousand-year-old capital: narrow Old Quarter lanes buzzing with motorbikes, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the home of bun cha and pho, with Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh as easy day trips from the city.
Sa Pa is a mountain town at about 1,600 m in Lao Cai province, northwest Vietnam, at the head of a deep valley of rice terraces still farmed as they have been for centuries. You can ride the cable car up Fansipan, the 'Roof of Indochina', and walk through villages of the Hmong, Dao, Giay and other communities.
Sa Pa has no airport, so you fly into Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport and continue overland. That makes the real question 'Hanoi only, or add Sa Pa?'. Best for: Hanoi only suits city walks, historic sights, local food and day trips to Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh. Adding Sa Pa suits trekkers and anyone craving cool mountain air, terraced valleys and village life.

Getting there: airport to Hanoi, Hanoi to Sa Pa
From Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) to the Old Quarter takes about 40-60 minutes by ride-hailing app car or metered taxi. An app car has a fixed fare with no haggling; with a taxi, use the official rank and make sure the meter is on. The airport bus (route 86 and others) takes about 60-80 minutes but has the lowest fare.
There are two ways on to Sa Pa. Several daily buses leave from various points in Hanoi and run straight to Sa Pa on the Noi Bai-Lao Cai expressway in about 5-6 hours, with sleeper buses and smaller cabin-style coaches, some running overnight. Or take the night train from Hanoi Station, which reaches Lao Cai Station around dawn (about 8 hours), then ride the final ~38 km uphill by bus or car.
Most buses and trains leave from central Hanoi, so from the airport take a taxi from the official rank or the airport bus into the city first. If you travel on to Sa Pa the same day you land, leave plenty of time, and ask when booking whether the bus can pick you up at the airport.
- Airport → Hanoi Old Quarter, ride-hailing app car: about 40-60 min, about 250,000-400,000 VND
- Airport → Hanoi Old Quarter, metered taxi: about 40-60 min, about 300,000-450,000 VND
- Hanoi airport bus (route 86 and others): about 60-80 min, about 30,000-50,000 VND (check routes and timetables at the airport)
- Hanoi → Sa Pa expressway bus or limousine: about 5-6 hours, about 280,000-450,000 VND (varies by class)
- Hanoi Station → Lao Cai Station night train: about 8 hours plus the road transfer to Sa Pa (fares vary by class and date; check official info)
How many days and what budget
The Hanoi guide suggests 4 to 5 days including Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh. The Sa Pa guide suggests 3 to 4 days including the trip from Hanoi, so if you add Sa Pa, plan those days on top of your Hanoi stay.
Daily budgets per person from the guides are below. Hanoi's mid-range figure includes a water puppet show; Sa Pa's includes a Fansipan cable car day.
- Hanoi budget: about 600,000 VND per day (guesthouse, local food, ride-hailing motorbike)
- Hanoi mid-range: about 1,800,000-2,300,000 VND per day (Old Quarter hotel, restaurants, water puppets)
- Hanoi high-end: about 4,500,000 VND+ per day (upscale hotel, overnight Ha Long cruise, private car)
- Sa Pa budget: about 700,000 VND per day (guesthouse, local food, trekking on foot)
- Sa Pa mid-range: about 1,500,000-2,500,000 VND per day (town hotel, restaurants, a Fansipan cable car day)
- Sa Pa high-end: about 5,000,000 VND+ per day (view resort, private car, guided trekking)
Weather: Hanoi normals and Sa Pa's seasons
The figures below are 1991–2020 normals from the WMO World Weather Information Service — Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, for the station Hanoi (WMO city data): high/low temperature and rainfall for each month, rounded. For Sa Pa we go by the local seasonal advice rather than monthly normals. Check the official forecast for this year's weather before you go.
In Hanoi, October-November and March-April are mild and pleasant. Winter from December to February is cooler and damper than many expect, with some days around 10°C. From May to September Hanoi is hot with frequent rain, reaching 300 mm in July and 335 mm in August. From summer into autumn, storms can cancel Ha Long Bay cruises.
In Sa Pa, September-October, when the terraces turn gold, and April-May, with clear skies, are best; June-August brings frequent rain and storms, while December-March is chilly, misty and cloudy, with occasional snow in January.
So October and April fall within both guides' best times. Hanoi's normals are 30/22°C and 126 mm in October, and 28/22°C and 79 mm in April.

- January: Hanoi 20/15°C, 28 mm
- April: Hanoi 28/22°C, 79 mm
- May: Hanoi 32/25°C, 188 mm
- July: Hanoi 33/27°C, 300 mm
- September: Hanoi 32/25°C, 195 mm
- October: Hanoi 30/22°C, 126 mm
- November: Hanoi 26/19°C, 48 mm
What you do there
Hanoi is a city you explore on foot. Hoan Kiem Lake with Ngoc Son Temple across a red bridge, the Old Quarter's historic merchant streets once dedicated to a single trade each, the Temple of Literature that housed Vietnam's first university, and a water puppet show are the classics. Bun cha and pho cost about 40,000-70,000 VND, and egg coffee about 30,000-60,000 VND.
The Hanoi guide lists Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh as trips out of the city. Ha Long Bay is about 2.5-3 hours by road, visited as a day trip or an overnight cruise, and Ninh Binh, nicknamed 'Ha Long Bay on land', is about 2 hours by car.
Sa Pa is a trip for walking and climbing. Mount Fansipan (3,143 m) is the highest peak in Vietnam and former Indochina, and the cable car reaches near the summit in about 15-20 minutes. It's cold and often cloudy on top, so bring warm layers. About 10 km southeast of town, the Muong Hoa Valley's rice terraces are green in summer and golden in autumn.
Every Saturday evening the square in front of the stone church in the town center hosts the 'Love Market' performance, and Ham Rong Mountain, with a viewpoint at about 1,800 m, and the Hmong village of Cat Cat, about 2 km away, are within walking distance. In the Muong Hoa valley villages of Ta Van and Lao Chai you can stay in a homestay. For food, try thang co, a traditional Hmong stew, sturgeon or salmon hotpot, and charcoal-grilled skewers.

How to choose — and how to add Sa Pa
Start with your days. The Hanoi guide's 4 to 5 days cover the city plus Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh. To add Sa Pa, set aside the Sa Pa guide's 3 to 4 days (including the trip from Hanoi), and on the day you head back to Hanoi, leave plenty of time for your flight.
Next, timing. October and April fall within both guides' best times. Mountain weather in Sa Pa changes several times a day and even summer mornings and evenings are cool, so bring a layer, and from December to March pack warm clothes and waterproof shoes. In heavy rain, mountain roads face landslide and flash-flood risks, and authorities sometimes suspend outdoor tours.
In Sa Pa's villages, always ask before photographing local people, and trek the valley with a licensed local guide. Climbing Fansipan on foot requires a Hoang Lien National Park entry permit and a guide or porter. Ha Long Bay cruises can be cancelled for weather, so book one early or mid-trip rather than the day before you fly home.
Entry rules (visa-free stay length, e-visa, etc.) can change, so check official Vietnamese government or embassy information before you travel.
