Hanoi in 4 Days: Where Does Ha Long Bay Fit?
Four days in Hanoi with Ha Long Bay, day by day. Pick a day trip or overnight cruise, then shift city days around opening days and weather.

The big picture: two city days, one Ha Long day, some slack
Our Hanoi guide suggests 4 to 5 days including Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh. This plan fits arrival, the city sights, Ha Long Bay and the run back to the airport into 4 days.
For a first visit, the Old Quarter (north of Hoan Kiem) is the easiest base, with eateries and cafes all around and the lake within walking distance. It can stay noisy late, so if you want quiet, the French Quarter (south of Hoan Kiem) is calmer and still walkable to the Old Quarter.
Ha Long Bay cruises can be cancelled for weather, so the guide recommends booking early or mid-trip rather than the day before you fly home. This plan puts Ha Long on day 3, leaving room to swap days if it is cancelled.
Day 1: Airport, Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake
From Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), a Grab car is the easiest way to the Old Quarter: the app sets the fare, so there is no haggling. For a metered taxi, take a well-known company's car from the official rank and ignore touts.
Drop your bags and walk to Hoan Kiem Lake, where a red bridge leads to Ngoc Son Temple. On weekend evenings the roads around the lake often become a pedestrian zone. Have bun cha in the Old Quarter (about 40,000-70,000 VND at local spots) and wander the lanes after dark.

- Grab car: about 40-60 min to the Old Quarter, about 250,000-400,000 VND
- Metered taxi: about 40-60 min, about 300,000-450,000 VND
- Airport bus (route 86 and others): about 60-80 min, about 30,000-50,000 VND; check routes and times at the airport
Day 2: Ba Dinh Square, Temple of Literature, water puppets
Start at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Ba Dinh Square. Officially it opens only in the morning and is closed on Mondays and Fridays (except some national days). It also closes for maintenance, and shorts or sleeveless tops aren't allowed, so check official information.
Next, visit the Temple of Literature, home to Vietnam's first university. In the afternoon, have egg coffee (about 30,000-60,000 VND) at a cafe near St. Joseph's Cathedral, and in the evening see a water puppet show near Hoan Kiem Lake. Book seats ahead.
If day 2 falls on a Monday or Friday, swap it with day 4, or skip the mausoleum and keep the rest.

Day 3: Ha Long Bay as a day trip or overnight
You reach Ha Long Bay by road. Vietnam's tourism authority describes it as about two hours from Hanoi, while our Hanoi guide allows about 2.5-3 hours with traffic. Expect to spend at least 4-6 hours of the day in a vehicle for the round trip.
A day trip leaves early and returns in the evening, so the rest of the 4-day plan stays intact. An overnight cruise leaving on day 3 means sleeping on board and getting back to Hanoi on the afternoon of day 4. You get evening and morning on the water, but an evening flight home becomes tight.
For an overnight, it is safer to leave on day 2, return on day 3 and push the city sights to days 3 and 4. Many travelers take a package with transport to and from Hanoi, so confirm the pickup point, time and refund terms when booking.
- Day trip: leave early on day 3, back in Hanoi in the evening
- Overnight, moved earlier: leave day 2, return day 3, city sights on days 3 and 4
- Overnight, as planned: leave day 3, return day 4, only with a late flight home
If the cruise is cancelled: switch to Ninh Binh
When storms or bad weather approach, authorities stop issuing tour-boat departure permits, and sailings can be cancelled even when it looks calm. If you visit between summer and autumn, have a backup plan ready.
The Hanoi guide's alternative is a Ninh Binh (Trang An, Tam Coc) day tour. Small boats glide between rice fields and limestone peaks, which is why it is called 'Ha Long Bay on land'. It is about 2 hours from Hanoi by car, a little shorter than the Ha Long trip.
On any boat, check where the life jackets are and how to wear one, and choose a reputable operator with life jackets.
Day 4: Pho breakfast, West Lake, souvenirs, airport
Begin the last day with pho. It is a breakfast dish, so many shops open early, and it costs about 40,000-70,000 VND. For something lighter, try banh cuon.
Spend the morning at a cafe around West Lake (Tay Ho). It is away from the main sights, so Grab is the easy way there and back. After lunch, pick up souvenirs in the Old Quarter and head to the airport. It is about 40-60 minutes from the Old Quarter, so leave extra time for traffic.
Markets, stalls and local eateries need cash, so keep some dong. Some vendors put a fruit basket on your shoulder for a photo and then ask for money; politely decline if you don't want it.
Before you go: season, budget and getting around
Hanoi is mild in October-November and March-April. December-February can drop to around 10°C, so bring a jacket. Ha Long Bay is misty and cool from December to March, and June-August is the rainy season with changeable weather.
Per our Hanoi guide, budget about 600,000 VND per person per day on a tight budget, or about 1,800,000-2,300,000 VND with an Old Quarter hotel, restaurants and a water puppet show. On an overnight cruise day, our Ha Long Bay guide puts it at about 2,500,000-4,000,000 VND per person (budget overnight) up to about 6,000,000 VND+ (upscale overnight).
- Get around by Grab (car or motorbike) or Xanh SM electric taxis
- Cross streets slowly at a steady pace; don't run or stop suddenly
- Check cruise refund terms and keep a spare day
- Check entry and visa rules with the Vietnamese government or embassy

How do I change the plan for an overnight cruise?
Leave on day 2, return on day 3 and move the city sights to days 3 and 4. Returning on the last day can make the airport run tight.
Is the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum open every day?
Officially it opens only in the morning and is closed on Mondays and Fridays (except some national days). It also closes for maintenance, so check official information before you go.
What if my Ha Long Bay cruise is cancelled for weather?
