How the two cities differ

You can look up flights to both from Incheon and Busan (Gimhae) on the route pages below. Straight-line distances from Incheon are about 2,680 km to Hanoi and 3,560 km to Ho Chi Minh City. Check schedules and flight times with the airlines (check official) and recent fares on the route pages.

The biggest difference is the weather. Hanoi in the north has distinct seasons and a cooler-than-expected winter (December-February), while Ho Chi Minh City in the south is hot all year with a dry and a wet season. The same month can call for very different packing.

Hanoi — a thousand-year-old capital and Ha Long Bay

Vietnam's historic capital: narrow Old Quarter lanes buzzing with motorbikes, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature and water puppet shows. It is the home of bun cha, clear-broth pho and egg coffee.

Easy side trips include a Ha Long Bay cruise among limestone islands and Ninh Binh, 'Ha Long Bay on land'. Cruises may not sail in bad weather, so check refund terms.

The Old Quarter is about 40-60 minutes from the airport by car. The best seasons are October-November and March-April; May-September is hot with frequent rain.

Best for: travelers who love history and wandering old lanes, and anyone keen to see Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh.

Ho Chi Minh City — energy, coffee and food

Vietnam's biggest and busiest city blends swirling motorbike traffic, French colonial buildings and a buzzing cafe culture. Independence Palace, the War Remnants Museum, the Central Post Office, Ben Thanh Market and Nguyen Hue Walking Street are the classics.

Side trips include a half-day to the Cu Chi Tunnels and a day on the Mekong Delta. Try southern dishes like com tam (broken rice) and banh xeo.

The center (former District 1) is about 25-45 minutes from the airport by car. Districts were abolished in the July 2025 administrative reform and addresses now use new names, so check both old and new names in your map app. The best season is the December-April dry season; May-November brings short afternoon downpours.

Best for: food, coffee and spa lovers, fans of big-city energy, and anyone looking for warmth in winter.
