Chiang Mai over Seollal: what to know first
Seollal (Lunar New Year's Day) falls on Sunday 7 February 2027 (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute lunar calendar); check the government's official announcement for the holiday period and any substitute holidays.
Our Chiang Mai guide calls November to February cool and dry, the best time to go. The guide also warns that around February to April, smoke from forest fires can make the air very poor. Plan a February trip with both in mind.
The guide suggests 4 to 5 days. Flights and hotels can book up over the holiday, so check early. Entry rules and procedures such as online arrival forms can change, so check Thailand's embassy or immigration website before you travel.
February weather by the normals
Chiang Mai's February normals are an average high of 33°C, a low of 17°C and 10 mm of rain (Thai Meteorological Department submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI), Chiang Mai station, 1991–2020). February has the least rain of all 12 months.
With highs of 33°C, midday is hot. The guide also says midday is very hot when you walk the Old City, so bring a hat and water. In March the high climbs to 35°C, and the guide describes March and April as very hot. Normals are long-term averages, not this year's forecast, so check the weather forecast before you go.
- January: high 30°C · low 16°C · rain 11 mm
- February: high 33°C · low 17°C · rain 10 mm
- March: high 35°C · low 20°C · rain 20 mm
Smoke and what to wear in February
The guide says that around February to April, smoke from forest fires can make the air very poor. Check the air quality index before and during your trip, and bring a mask or change dates if you have breathing problems.
Pack with the February normals in mind (high 33°C · low 17°C), plus these points from the guide.
- Temples: clothes that cover shoulders and knees (take off your shoes before entering halls)
- Walking at midday: a hat and water
- Doi Inthanon National Park: it is chilly at the top, so bring a layer
- Breathing problems: a mask
- Roads to Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon: winding mountain roads, so prepare if you get car-sick
A 3-5 day plan: trim or extend the guide's itinerary
The guide's base plan is the 4 days below. Our Chiang Mai 4-day route post covers each day and the night-market days in detail, so here we only show how to shorten or stretch it to fit the holiday.
With 3 days, drop the full-day Day 3 (Doi Inthanon National Park or an elephant sanctuary) and use Days 1, 2 and 4. With 5 days, add the option you skipped on Day 3. For elephant experiences, choose a sanctuary with no riding or shows.
7 February 2027 is a Sunday, so if a Sunday falls in your trip, add the Sunday Walking Street. It runs from Tha Phae Gate through the Old City and is very crowded. On Saturday evening the Saturday Walking Street, a little calmer, runs along the silversmith street south of the Old City.

- Day 1: Check in, an afternoon temple walk in the Old City (Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang), then the Night Bazaar
- Day 2: Doi Suthep in the morning, Nimman cafes in the afternoon, khao soi for dinner (on a Sunday, the Walking Street)
- Day 3: A full day at Doi Inthanon or an elephant sanctuary, then a massage in the evening
- Day 4: A morning cooking class or market visit, souvenirs, then the airport (leave town with plenty of time)
Getting around and where to stay
Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is just south-west of the Old City. A car from a ride-hailing app takes about 15-20 min to the Old City or Nimman, about 150-250 THB, with the fare fixed in the app. There are also airport taxis, songthaews and an airport shuttle bus (about 40 THB, check official). Our airport transfer post covers each option.
In town, use songthaews (short rides about 30-50 THB per person; agree on the fare first) and ride-hailing apps, and explore the Old City temples on foot. For distant hills like Doi Suthep or Doi Inthanon, hiring a car with driver for a half or full day is easiest; agree on hours and price first. Riding a scooter yourself requires a licence recognized in Thailand and a helmet.
- Old City (inside the walls): first visit, temple walks, Sunday market
- Nimmanhaemin (Nimman): cafes, restaurants, a younger vibe; handy for the airport and Doi Suthep
- Night Bazaar and the Ping River: night markets, riverside hotels
- Santitham: local feel, value
- Out-of-town resorts (Mae Rim, Hang Dong): relaxing, families, nature; 30+ minutes by car to town
Budget, as the guide puts it
Below are the guide's per-person daily budgets. According to Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports (2025), foreign visitors to Chiang Mai province spent an average of 4,736.14 baht per person per day (spending there; excluding international airfare). Actual costs vary widely with your itinerary and lodging.
Khao soi costs about 60-100 THB at local spots. Night-market street food is cheap, so carry small cash.
- Budget: about 1,000 THB per day (guesthouse, local food, songthaew)
- Mid-range: about 2,500-3,500 THB per day (hotel, restaurants, one tour, massage)
- High-end: about 6,000 THB+ per day (resort, car with driver, private tours)
