The short answer

Brisbane is Queensland's capital, a relaxed city strung along the winding Brisbane River, with the CBD, parks and cultural venues on its banks. A trip here centers on the city: swimming at the riverside beach and hopping ferries along the river.

The Gold Coast is a resort city on Queensland's east coast where long sandy beaches meet a high-rise skyline. The focus is surfing and beach walks, big theme parks, and nearby national parks with rainforest and glow-worm caves.

Best for: Brisbane suits travelers who want galleries and museums, riverside walks, night views and a koala sanctuary. The Gold Coast suits travelers who want swimming and surfing, theme parks and rainforest outings.

From the airport to your hotel

From Brisbane Airport (BNE), the airport train runs straight to central city stations in about 20 minutes, for about A$20-25. With luggage or in a group, a taxi or ride-hailing takes about 20-30 minutes and costs about A$45-65.

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is at Bilinga near Coolangatta on the southern end of the Gold Coast. Take a Translink bus to Broadbeach South tram station and change to the G:link tram, or use a shuttle or taxi. Surfers Paradise is about 30-40 minutes by car or about an hour by bus.

First check which airport is on your ticket. From Brisbane Airport, Airtrain runs straight to Gold Coast stations such as Helensvale, where you change to the G:link tram: about 1.5-2 hours for about A$30-60. Many international routes to both cities connect via other hubs, so compare connections and total travel time.

How many days and what budget?

The guides suggest 4 days for Brisbane and 5 to 6 days for the Gold Coast. The Brisbane guide suggests 6 days if you add the Gold Coast.

The mid-range daily budget is the same in both guides: about A$250-400 per person. For a budget trip, the Gold Coast guide gives about A$120-170, a little below Brisbane's about A$130-180; for an upscale trip, the Gold Coast's about A$800+ is above Brisbane's about A$700+.

Food prices are similar. Café brunch is about A$20-35 in both, and fish and chips about A$15-25. Brisbane's Aussie meat pie is about A$6-10, and an Australian beef steak on the Gold Coast about A$35-70. Moreton Bay bugs are often market price in both, so check first.

Weather by month: the seasons are flipped

Australia is in the southern hemisphere, so December-February is summer and June-August is winter. Both guides recommend April-May and September-November. The Brisbane guide calls these months warm and pleasant, and the Gold Coast guide says September-November gets less rain than March-May.

December-February summer is hot and rainy in both cities. Brisbane gets frequent afternoon storms, and the Gold Coast gets frequent showers and busy school holidays, so check the forecast. In the normals, February is the wettest month in both cities.

July-September gets little rain in both cities, and June-August winter brings many clear, mild days. On the Gold Coast, humpback whales can be seen from June to November.

The figures below are 1991–2020 normals from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI): Brisbane Airport station (Brisbane Aero) for Brisbane and Gold Coast Seaway station for the Gold Coast.

What you do there

Brisbane centers on the river. The South Bank beach is a free sandy-beach lagoon on the riverside, and the Queensland Cultural Centre brings together the state galleries, the modern art gallery and the museum (permanent collections are generally free). At night, take in the CBD skyline from Kangaroo Point Cliffs; walk across Story Bridge, or look out over the city to the sea from Mount Coot-tha Lookout. There are also suburban koala sanctuaries, plus Moreton and North Stradbroke, sand islands reached by boat.

The Gold Coast centers on the sea and the forest. Swim between the lifeguard flags at Surfers Paradise Beach, take a beginner surf lesson, or spend a day at a theme park in the northern Gold Coast. Burleigh Head National Park has a short headland walk; Springbrook National Park, about an hour by car, has rainforest, waterfalls and a glow-worm cave at night; Tamborine Mountain has lookouts and forest walks. Lamington National Park is part of the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests.

Getting around: Brisbane runs on ferries, buses and trains, and the Gold Coast on the G:link tram along the coast. Brisbane's inner-city CityHopper ferry is free, and Translink public transport in both cities charges a 50-cent flat fare (Airtrain excluded; check official information). A rental car is easiest for national parks, and Australia drives on the left.

How to choose, or do both

If city walks, culture and night views come first, pick Brisbane; if beaches, theme parks and rainforest come first, pick the Gold Coast. For a first stay, Brisbane's City (CBD), handy for transport, or riverside South Bank work well, and on the Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise is close to tram stops and the beach.

To see both, follow the Brisbane guide's 6-day plan: stay in Brisbane and spend a day on the Gold Coast by train. Some airport trains from Brisbane Airport also continue toward the Gold Coast.

Check official Australian government information on entry requirements (ETA, visa and so on) before you travel. The UV is very strong in both cities, so pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and only swim between the lifeguard flags.
