How many days for the Gold Coast? Plan 5 to 6
The Gold Coast is a resort city on Queensland's east coast where long sandy beaches meet a high-rise skyline. You can combine surfing and beach walks, big theme parks, and nearby national parks with rainforest and glow-worm caves. The guide suggests 5 to 6 days.
That gives you a day for Surfers Paradise Beach, a day at a theme park, a day for a surf lesson and Burleigh Head National Park, and a day for Springbrook National Park or Tamborine Mountain. Spend a spare day on the treetop walks of Lamington National Park, part of the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests, or, from June to November, on a boat trip to see humpback whales.
Springbrook National Park is about an hour by car and Tamborine Mountain about 40 minutes to an hour. On mountain days a rental car or a tour makes things easier.
- Suggested stay: 5 to 6 days
- Beaches: Surfers Paradise Beach, Burleigh Heads
- Theme parks: several in the northern Gold Coast
- Day trips: Springbrook National Park (about 1 hour by car), Tamborine Mountain (about 40 minutes to 1 hour by car)
Airport to the city: Gold Coast Airport or Brisbane Airport
Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is at Bilinga near Coolangatta on the southern end of the Gold Coast. Take a Translink bus to Broadbeach South tram station and change to the G:link tram, or use a shuttle or taxi to your hotel. Surfers Paradise is about 30-40 minutes by car or about 1 hour by bus.
Translink buses and trams charge a 50-cent flat fare (check official). A taxi is about A$60-90. Check official routes and timetables.
If you land at Brisbane Airport (BNE), Airtrain runs straight to Gold Coast stations such as Helensvale. Change there to the G:link tram for Surfers Paradise; the trip takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours and costs about A$30-60. Airtrain is not part of the 50-cent fare, so check official timetables and fares.
- Gold Coast Airport to Surfers Paradise: about 30-40 minutes by car, about 1 hour by bus
- Translink bus and tram: 50-cent flat fare (check official)
- Taxi: about A$60-90
- Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast: Airtrain + G:link tram, about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, about A$30-60
Getting around: the G:link tram along the coast
The G:link tram is light rail along the coast from Helensvale via Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads. The Translink 50-cent flat fare applies; check official information on how to pay.
City buses reach beaches and shopping areas the tram doesn't, using the same transit payment. Ride-hailing and taxis are handy in the evening or to and from theme parks.
A rental car is easiest for national parks and hinterland towns. Australia drives on the left, and national park roads are narrow and winding, so take care.
- Tram (G:link): Helensvale to Burleigh Heads, 50-cent flat fare
- City buses: same transit payment as the tram
- Ride-hailing and taxis: evenings, theme park trips
- Rental car: national parks and hinterland towns; drive on the left
Where to stay on a first visit
For a first visit, Surfers Paradise is the easiest base: the hub of high-rise stays, restaurants and shops, close to tram stops and the beach.
Broadbeach, south of Surfers Paradise, has plenty of restaurants and a more relaxed feel. Burleigh Heads has a headland park and surf beach, lots of cafés and a laid-back feel, and is now linked by the tram extension.
Main Beach is a quieter beach area north of Surfers Paradise with lovely walking paths, a good fit for families.

- Surfers Paradise: first visit, beach and dining
- Broadbeach: dining, slightly calmer
- Burleigh Heads: surfing, local vibe
- Main Beach: quiet rest, families
A basic 4-day route
Day 1: go from the airport to Surfers Paradise, check in and take a beach walk, then have fish and chips for dinner, about A$15-25. If you swim, stay between the lifeguard flags.
Day 2: spend the day at a theme park. Several amusement, water and wildlife-style parks sit in the northern Gold Coast, and multi-park passes exist. Decide which parks and dates first, then compare.
Day 3: a morning surf lesson, Burleigh Head National Park in the afternoon and Broadbeach in the evening. Day 4: the waterfalls and rainforest of Springbrook National Park, then a night glow-worm tour or Tamborine Mountain.

- Day 1: airport → check in at Surfers Paradise → beach walk → fish and chips
- Day 2: a day at a theme park
- Day 3: morning surf lesson → Burleigh Head National Park → Broadbeach in the evening
- Day 4: Springbrook National Park (waterfalls and rainforest) → night glow-worm tour or Tamborine Mountain
