The short answer

Boracay is a small island famous for the powdery sand of White Beach and its sunsets. Restaurants and shops line the beach path of about 4 km, so most places are walkable, and at sunset you can sail on a paraw, a traditional outrigger sailboat. If you want to stay on one beach and enjoy the sea and sunsets, Boracay suits you.

Bohol is an island known for island-hopping and snorkeling in clear water, plus unusual nature like the Chocolate Hills and tiny tarsiers. A typical plan has you stay by the beach on Panglao, spend one day on an early-morning island-hopping trip and another on a countryside tour with a hired car and driver. If you want both the sea and inland nature, Bohol suits you.

Who each suits: Boracay for a beach-centered break with shore walks, sunset sailing and kitesurfing. Bohol for travelers who want a mix of sea and land, from snorkeling with sea turtles to the Chocolate Hills and a Loboc River cruise.

Airport to hotel: road and boat for Boracay, a short drive for Bohol

Boracay has no airport. From Kalibo Airport (KLO) a bus or van takes about 1.5-2 hours to Caticlan jetty, then a boat crosses in about 15 minutes. Allow about 2-2.5 hours to your hotel; combined road, boat and island transfer packages are available. Caticlan Airport (MPH) is right next to the jetty, about 30 minutes from the airport to the island. Check flights and stops in your flight search results and the airline's official information.

Besides the boat fare, terminal and environmental fees may be charged at the jetty. Amounts can change, so check official information and carry pesos in cash. From the island port, e-trikes take about 10-20 minutes to hotels; shared rides are cheap and private ones start from about PHP 150. Boracay may require proof of a booking at an accredited hotel, so when booking, check that it's accredited and what documents the jetty asks for in official information.

Bohol-Panglao International Airport (TAG) is on Panglao Island, where the beach resorts are. Alona Beach is about 15-25 minutes away by resort pickup, airport taxi or van, or tricycle, and Tagbilaran City, the main city of Bohol, is about 20-30 minutes by car across the bridge. You can also fly into Mactan-Cebu (CEB) and take a fast ferry from Cebu City (Pier 1) to Tagbilaran port (about 2 hours by ferry, plus the airport-to-pier transfer). Ferries often sell out on weekends and holidays, so book ahead and check schedules and weather.

Boracay: White Beach, sunset sailing and Puka Shell Beach

White Beach is about 4 km of powdery sand, famous for sunsets. Station 1 in the north has the widest sand and a quieter mood, while Station 2 in the middle has the most restaurants, shops and tour counters and stays lively at night. Station 3 in the south has lower rates and a calmer feel. Off Station 1 stands Willy's Rock, a rock with a small Marian statue that you can walk close to at low tide.

Sunset sailing is a short trip on a paraw, a traditional outrigger sailboat, and you may get wet. Island hopping takes you by boat to nearby islets and coral waters for snorkeling, so check the route and what's included when booking. Puka Shell Beach in the north has fewer people than White Beach but can have waves, and Diniwid Beach, beyond the north end of White Beach, is good for a quiet swim.

The Mount Luho viewpoint, the island's highest hill, looks out over the whole island and the sea. Bulabog Beach on the east side hosts kitesurfing lessons and taster sessions in the windy season (roughly November-April) and is better for wind sports than swimming. For food, you can buy seafood at the market and pay a nearby restaurant a cooking fee, and a mango shake is about PHP 120-200.

Bohol: Balicasag's sea and the Chocolate Hills

Bohol's main beach is Alona Beach on Panglao, with hotels, restaurants and dive shops, liveliest in the evening. Resorts are spread along the coast outside Alona; they are quieter, but you may need a ride to restaurants. Balicasag Island, the classic island-hopping stop, offers snorkeling with sea turtles over coral reefs, and Virgin Island is a white sandbar that appears at low tide. Early-morning boat trips sometimes spot dolphins.

On the mainland, the Chocolate Hills are over a thousand rounded hills; they turn brown in the dry season, like chocolate drops. The viewpoint is paid. At the tarsier sanctuary you can see tiny nocturnal tarsiers; they are easily stressed, so stay quiet, never use flash and visit an accredited sanctuary. A floating lunch cruise on the Loboc River through the jungle, the old Spanish-era stone Baclayon Church and the Bilar Man-Made Forest, a road lined with tall trees, are usually part of the same countryside tour.

Food highlights are seafood barbecue, with prawns, squid and fish grilled over charcoal (often priced by weight, so check first), lechon, a whole roast pig with crackling skin, and adobo at about 150-300 pesos a plate.

Getting around, how many days and budget

On Boracay you walk most of the White Beach path and use e-trikes on the island's roads; agree on the destination and fare before riding. Ride-hailing apps may be hard to use on the island, so asking your hotel for a car is easier. On Bohol, tricycles cover short trips (agree on the fare first), and mainland sights are usually visited on a day hire with a driver. Motorbikes and scooters are useful around Panglao, but you need a license and helmet, and some roads are rough. In both places, island-tour boats may be cancelled in bad weather.

Both islands suit 4 to 5 days. Below are per-person daily budgets for each island. They are not on the same basis, so we don't compare which costs more.

When to go: the seasons on each island

For both islands we go by the local seasonal advice rather than monthly normals. The two are not based on the same data.

Boracay: 'November-May is drier, and White Beach's water is calm in this season. From June to October the southwest monsoon brings waves to White Beach, and typhoons can stop boats.'

Bohol: 'The December-May dry season, especially January-April, brings the calmest, clearest seas. June-November is the wet season with frequent showers, and typhoons (mainly July-October) can stop ferries and flights.' Since typhoons and strong winds can stop boats on both islands, leave plenty of time to reach the airport on departure day and build a spare day into your plans.

How to choose, and what to check before you go

If you want to stay on one beach for sunsets, shore walks and wind sports, choose Boracay; if you want sea trips plus inland nature like the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers, choose Bohol. If you want to visit both on one trip, check official information before you go for travel between the two islands.
