One day on Gulangyu: the big picture

Gulangyu (Kulangsu) is an island south-west of Xiamen Island across the 600 m-wide Lujiang Strait, about 5 minutes by ferry, and a national 5A-rated scenic area. This post takes just the Gulangyu day out of a Xiamen trip and walks through the ferry, the sights on the island and when to head back.

The guide's day goes like this: take an early ferry from Dongdu Passenger Terminal, see Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden and the Piano Museum, and leave the island a little before the return sailings get busy. The evening is spent back across the water around Zhongshan Road.

For the full plan with the museums and Wuyuan Bay Wetland Park, see the 2-night, 3-day route; for getting from the airport towards the Ferry Terminal, see the airport post. Read together, they make the trip easy to plan.

Morning: the ferry from Dongdu Passenger Terminal

There are four visitor routes: Dongdu Passenger Terminal–Sanqiutian Pier, Dongdu–Neicuo'ao Pier, Songyu Passenger Terminal–Neicuo'ao, and Xiamen First Pier–Neicuo'ao. The guide's day starts from Dongdu.

On the Dongdu–Sanqiutian route, sailings run 7:10–17:30, and until 18:30 from June to September. Other routes have their own times, so check them when you choose a ticket.

The island's highlights: Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden

The guide calls Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden Gulangyu's best-known sights, and together with the Piano Museum they are the core of the day.

The island's name has a story too. It was named in the Ming dynasty after Gulang (Drumming Wave) Rock in the south-west, which sounds like a drum when waves strike it.

The walk itself is part of the visit. Gulangyu gained international settlement status in 1903, and 931 historic buildings mixing Chinese and international styles of the 19th and early 20th centuries survive, along with roads and gardens. As "Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement" it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. Check hours and prices for the island's sights in official information.

The Piano Museum, the "Island of Music" and more

Alongside Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden, the guide's day includes the Piano Museum. With many pianos and more than 100 musical families, Gulangyu was named the "Island of Music" by the Chinese Musicians' Association in 2002.

The island also has Bright Moon Garden and the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall. If you have time left after the main three, add these two.

Getting back: which piers, and when it's busy

Return sailings are busiest from 15:00 to 18:30, and the guide suggests heading back a little earlier. Under the operator's rules, visitor-route returns off the island leave from Sanqiutian Pier or Neicuo'ao Pier.

There is also a night route, from Hall 2 of the Xiamen Ferry Terminal to Sanqiutian Pier, 17:50–23:45 (from 18:50 in June to September). Overnight return sailings leave from Piano Pier on Gulangyu. Exact times follow the ticketing system and the notices at the pier.

From 12 October 2026, the approach bridge at the Xiamen Ferry Terminal is being rebuilt for about 40 days, so walking routes change. Work may run longer in bad weather; follow the signs and staff on site.

Evening on Zhongshan Road, and checks before you go

In the guide's plan, the evening is for walking Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street and taking a harbour cruise with the light show at Heping Wharf. The cruise lasts 90 to 120 minutes, with views of Gulangyu and Kinmen from the water. Check official information for times and fares.

Typhoons can halt all Gulangyu ferry routes, so check official forecasts and ferry notices before you go. As for timing, according to the Fujian provincial government the annual average temperature is around 20.9°C, without extreme heat or cold.

Check official information for ferry and bus fares. Visa rules, including visa-free entry, change often, so check the latest rules with the Chinese embassy before you travel.
