The big picture: a city day, an Alpine Route day and an Iwase day

Plan on 2 to 3 days in Toyama (with the Alpine Route). This post takes the 3-day version and gives one whole day to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. On day 1 you arrive and look out to the Tateyama range from the city, on day 2 you ride the Alpine Route, and on day 3 you follow the canal to the port town of Iwase.

In 2026 the Alpine Route is scheduled to operate from 15 April to 30 November. Outside that period, or if you would rather walk old streets than go into the mountains, swap day 2 for Yatsuo, about 25 min away by JR. The standard two-day city route by tram and the airport-to-city options are covered in the posts below.

Day 1: Arrive and preview the Tateyama range from the city

Once you reach Toyama Station by airport bus (JPY 470) or taxi, board Route 3, the loop-line tram. It is about 7 min to Kokusai Kaigijo-mae, and Toyama Castle is a 2-min walk from the stop. Inside the keep, rebuilt in 1954, the Folk Museum covers more than 400 years of the castle's history.

Next, go up the free Toyama City Hall observation tower, with a 360-degree view from 70 m up, and look out to the Tateyama range: a first look at the mountains you will visit the next day. The tower is also a short tram ride from Toyama Station.

Back at Toyama Station, Fugan Canal Kansui Park is about a 9-min walk away. The Tenmon Bridge observation deck also looks out to the Tateyama range, and the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design (TAD) beside the park shows works from Picasso, Miro and Chagall to posters and chair design. For dinner, try Toyama Bay sushi or Toyama Black ramen.

Day 2: The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

The Alpine Route is a 37.2 km mountain sightseeing route with a maximum elevation difference of 1,975 m, linking Tateyama Station in Toyama with Ogizawa Station in Nagano by cable car, highland bus, ropeway and more. Private cars cannot use it. In 2026 it is scheduled to operate from Wednesday 15 April to Monday 30 November.

Build the day around two highlights. From Murodo Terminal (2,450 m) it is about a 10–15 min walk to the volcanic lake Mikurigaike, and the route also passes Kurobe Dam, Japan's tallest at 186 m.

Check how to get from Toyama Station to Tateyama Station, the timetables on the route and whether reservations are needed in official information. Fares are posted on the official website as of 27 February 2026 and may change. Check access, timetables, fares and reservations in official information before you go, and use it to decide how far along the route to go and how to come back.

Day 3: Canal cruise to Iwase, then the Glass Art Museum if time allows

From Kansui Park, take the Fugan Suijo Line along the canal to the Iwase Canal Kaikan, about 60 min, passing the Nakajima Lock, known as a "water elevator". One way is JPY 2,500, including a one-way tram ticket (half price for elementary school children), and the 2026 season runs from 20 March to 23 November. There are non-operating days for weed clearing and maintenance (in 2026: 6 October and 10 November), so check the schedule on the official website.

Iwase grew rich in the Edo period as a port of call for Kitamaebune ships. See what it was like at the Former Baba Family Residence (9:00–17:00, adults JPY 100, cash only) and walk the streets, then walk about 10 min to Higashi-Iwase and ride the Toyama Port Line tram back to Toyama Station in about 23 min. On days without the cruise, take a tram bound for Iwasehama from Toyama Station for the outward trip too.

If time allows, stop at the Toyama Glass Art Museum inside the TOYAMA Kirari complex designed by Kengo Kuma. It is about 2 min on foot from the Grand Plaza-mae tram stop, open 9:30–18:00 (entry until 30 min before closing), JPY 200 for the permanent exhibition (general and university students), and closed on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. To get back to the airport, take the airport bus from Toyama Station (flat JPY 470 between Toyama Station and Toyama Airport).

Swapping the Alpine Route for Yatsuo

If your dates fall outside the Alpine Route season (15 April–30 November 2026), or you would rather walk old streets than go into the mountains, spend day 2 in Yatsuo. Take the JR Takayama Line from Toyama Station to Etchu-Yatsuo Station, about 25 min. Check train times and fares on the JR websites.

Yatsuo is a hillside town of wooden machiya houses and stone-paved slopes, with power lines run behind the houses so the streets look clean, and two sake breweries within walking distance. Take your time on the stone-paved streets of machiya, washi paper shops and breweries.

Owara Kaze no Bon, with about 300 years of history, is held every year for three days from 1 September. If you plan to go during the festival, check the schedule and arrangements in official information.

Where to stay, getting around and budget

Staying both nights in the Toyama Station and downtown area means you never have to move your bags. Both the airport bus and the trams pass through, Kansui Park is about a 9-min walk away, and the tram bound for Iwasehama and JR trains to Etchu-Yatsuo Station both leave from Toyama Station.

Trams are the main way around the city, and nationwide transit IC cards such as Suica work on them. If you are moving on, the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Kanazawa Station in about 20 min, and Takayama Station is about 1 hour 30 min by the Limited Express Hida on the Takayama Line. Check times and fares on the JR websites.

When to go: the Alpine Route season and Toyama's normals

This plan works while the Alpine Route operates, from 15 April to 30 November in 2026. Of April and May, good months for walking, the season covers 15 April onward. Japan Meteorological Agency normals for Toyama station (1991–2020) give April average highs of about 18°C, lows of about 7°C and about 135 mm of precipitation, and May highs of about 23°C, lows of about 13°C and about 123 mm.

In autumn, October has average highs of about 22°C, lows of about 13°C and about 172 mm, and November highs of about 16°C, lows of about 7°C and about 225 mm. The Fugan Suijo Line's 2026 season ends on 23 November, so after that, go to Iwase by tram.

All of these figures are for the Toyama city station and do not apply to the mountains. Murodo is about 15°C colder than the lowlands and often below freezing in November. Normals are long-term averages, so check the weather forecast before you go. Still choosing between Toyama and Kanazawa? The comparison below can help.
