Short answer: October for walks and islands, November–March for oysters, early spring for flounder soup

The Tongyeong guide's timing advice is built around seasonal food and events. Oysters are in season from November to March, and dodari ssukguk (flounder and mugwort soup) is only served for about two months in early spring. The cable car may open early or run late in May, August and October.

By the normals, of April, May and October, whose average highs are about 17.9–22.3°C, October gets the least rain, about 76.4 mm (April about 138.8 mm, May about 159.6 mm). For the sea, islands and cable car with less worry about rain, look at October first; for oysters, go between November and March. For a day-by-day route, see the separate 2-day post.

Which numbers we used

The temperatures and rainfall here are the Korea Meteorological Administration 30-year normals for 1991–2020 at Tongyeong station: average high, average low and monthly rainfall. Temperatures are in °C and rainfall in mm.

Normals are long-term averages, so they don't tell you this year's weather. Island ferries and the cable car depend on the day's weather, so check the forecast and whether they are running just before you set out.

January-June normals

Korea Meteorological Administration, 1991–2020, Tongyeong station. Each line shows average high / average low / rainfall. January is the coldest month, with an average low of about -0.8°C.

July-December normals

Same source and period. August is the hottest month, with an average high of about 29.6°C, and July is the wettest, with about 289.1 mm. December, at about 32.4 mm, and January, at about 32.2 mm, are the driest.

Mireuksan cable car: hours change with the season and weather

Mireuksan (461 m) is Tongyeong's highest peak; from the top you can see the islands of the Hallyeosu waterway and, on clear days, Tsushima. The 8-person gondolas take about 9 minutes to the upper station.

Hours vary by season and weather. The cable car may open early or run late in May, August and October, and it can stop in bad weather. It closes on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month (the next day if that is a public holiday), and ticket sales may close 2–3 hours before the end of operation, so go in the morning. Dates and hours can change, so check official information.

Island ferries: the day's weather matters more than the season

Ferries run from Tongyeong Port to Hansando (Jeseungdang), Yokjido (via Yeonhwado and Udo) and Somaemuldo (via Bijindo and Daemaemuldo), among others. Sailings change with the weather, so check with the ferry company or terminal before you go, including your return boat.

By the normals, June to September are wet, with about 195.8 mm, about 289.1 mm, about 243.9 mm and about 177.1 mm. The guide suggests adding at least one more day if you want to include the islands.

Ferries to Somaemuldo leave Tongyeong Port at 07:00, 11:00 and 14:30 on weekdays (check weekends and holidays with the operator). Part of the lighthouse trail (the section down to Yeolmokgae) has been closed since 3 October 2025 until further notice, so you may not be able to reach the lighthouse islet (city tourism site, checked 5 October 2026). Yokjido has spots for fishing, island loops and swimming, and Yeonhwado is known for Yongmeori (Dragon Head) Rock just before sunset.

Oysters November–March, flounder soup in early spring, festivals in spring and summer

Farms between Tongyeong and Geoje produce about 80% of Korea's oysters. Most restaurants serve fresh oyster dishes only in season, November to March, and clear mulmegitang (snailfish soup) is served from November to February. In this period January is the coldest month, with an average high of about 7.9°C and low of about -0.8°C. In town, Sebyeonggwan opens 09:00–17:00 in November–February and 09:00–18:00 in March–October.

Dodari ssukguk, flounder boiled with sea mugwort, is only served for about two months in early spring, and flounder is said to taste best in April. The Tongyeong International Music Festival is held every year from late March to early April, and the Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival every summer, around the 7th day of the 7th lunar month.

Dates change each year, so check the city tourism site (utour.go.kr). Rooms can sell out early at busy times such as the music festival, so compare prices for your dates early.
