How the Anping day works
Anping, Tainan's seaside district, brings together Anping Old Fort, the site of a 17th-century Dutch fort, the Anping Tree House, a former warehouse overtaken by giant banyan roots, and an old street with canals. This post adds the Tainan Confucius Temple in the city center to make one day themed on old forts and lane food.
Anping Old Fort, the Anping Tree House and the Confucius Temple all open 08:30-17:30. So the Confucius Temple in the morning, Anping by day, the seaside at sunset and old-town lanes in the evening keeps you ahead of closing times. For a full 3-4 day plan, see the Tainan first-trip post.
- Around 08:30: Tainan Confucius Temple (closed on Lunar New Year's Eve)
- Morning: Taiwan Tourist Shuttle, city bus or taxi to Anping
- Midday: Anping Old Fort → Anping Tree House (both until 17:30)
- Afternoon: the Anping old street, canals and snacks
- Sunset: the seaside → evening at Chihkan Tower and Shennong Street or Haian Road
Morning: start at the Tainan Confucius Temple
The Tainan Confucius Temple is a historic Confucius temple known as Taiwan's first school. Its red walls and old trees are lovely, and the morning, before the sun gets strong, is a good time to walk there. It opens 08:30-17:30 and closes on Lunar New Year's Eve. Check official information for the ticketed area and fees before you go.
In temples, don't get in the way of people offering incense, and take photos quietly and as signs allow. The temple sits in the West Central District, within walking distance of Chihkan Tower and Shennong Street, which makes it easy to come back to these lanes in the evening.

Getting to Anping: Tourist Shuttle, bus or taxi
Tainan has no MRT, so buses are the main public transport. The visitor-oriented Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Anping line passes the Confucius Temple and Chihkan Tower on its way to Anping, the same direction as this route. Check stops and timetables in official information before you go.
Anping is a little away from the center and buses there are infrequent. Check timetables in a map app in advance, and mix in taxis or ride-hailing when times do not fit. Taxis are metered. YouBike shared bikes are also good around Anping, but avoid long rides in the midday heat.
- Transit card (EasyCard or iPASS): buses, YouBike and convenience store purchases
- Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Anping line: via the Confucius Temple and Chihkan Tower to Anping
- Taxis and ride-hailing: handy around Anping where buses are infrequent; taxis are metered
- YouBike: good for short hops around Anping; skip the midday heat
Anping Old Fort and the Anping Tree House
Anping Old Fort is the site of a 17th-century Dutch fort, with old wall ruins and a lookout tower. It opens daily 08:30-17:30, and standard admission is about NT$70. Chihkan Tower, which you can see in the evening, also stands on the site of a Dutch-era fort, so the day takes in two old fort sites.
The Anping Tree House is a former warehouse overtaken by the roots of giant banyan trees. It also opens daily 08:30-17:30, with standard admission about NT$70. Both close at 17:30, so see them one after the other during the day rather than arriving late in the afternoon.

- Anping Old Fort: daily 08:30-17:30, standard admission about NT$70
- Anping Tree House: daily 08:30-17:30, standard admission about NT$70
- Tainan Confucius Temple: 08:30-17:30, closed on Lunar New Year's Eve, check fees officially
Old street, canals and Tainan food
Anping is the seaside district with Anping Old Fort, an old street and canals. After the fort and the Tree House, slow down and take a break along the old street and the canals. Lane eateries and night markets are often cash only, so carry Taiwan dollars; convenience store ATMs accept foreign cards.
Here are Tainan dishes that work well in small portions through the day. Start with beef soup or milkfish porridge for breakfast, then share small bowls of noodles and snacks at lunch and dinner to try more of them.
- Danzai noodles: a small bowl of noodles in shrimp broth topped with minced pork sauce; portions are small, so treat it as a snack
- Milkfish dishes: milkfish is farmed along the Tainan coast and eaten as porridge or soup, often for breakfast
- Beef soup: thin slices of raw beef cooked by pouring hot broth over them; many locals have it early in the morning
- Coffin bread: thick hollowed-out toast filled with creamy stew, also found at night markets
- Night market snacks: oyster omelets, fried chicken cutlets and Taiwanese sausages, about NT$50-100 each
Sunset by the sea, evening in old-town lanes
Anping is a seaside district, so the sunset is a good way to wrap up the daytime part of the route. Back in the center, Chihkan Tower opens daily until 21:30, so you can see it lit up (standard admission about NT$70). Shennong Street, within walking distance, is most atmospheric when the lanterns come on in the evening; people live here, so keep noise down.
If you want to keep eating, walk the food stalls and mural-lined lanes around Haian Road and Guohua Street, close to Shennong Street. On a Thursday, Saturday or Sunday, Garden Night Market is another option. It does not open every day, so check official information before you go.
If you would rather rest quietly by the sea, you can stay in Anping. It is away from the center, so you travel by bus or taxi. On a first visit, the West Central District is easier, with the Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower and Shennong Street all walkable.
Budget, what to bring, when to go
Admission on this route is about NT$70 each for Anping Old Fort and the Anping Tree House, plus about NT$70 if you add Chihkan Tower in the evening. Check official information for the Confucius Temple ticketed area. A daily budget is about NT$1,300-1,800 per person with guesthouses, night markets and buses, or about NT$3,000-4,000 with a city hotel, restaurant meals and some taxis. There is no tipping; some restaurants add a 10% service charge.
The sun is strong, so bring a hat, sunscreen and a small umbrella, and plan walks for mornings and evenings. October-March is the best time: drier and sunnier, with mild winters. January normals are a high of 23°C, a low of 15°C and 21 mm of rain (Central Weather Administration (CWA), Taiwan, Tainan station, 1991–2020). Many shops close and sights are crowded over Lunar New Year.
Entry conditions such as visa-free stays can change. Check official Taiwan government information before you go.
