Short answer: Nara Park in autumn, timed by the official forecast

The Nara guide names autumn leaves in Nara Park as the highlight of autumn. It does not give a month for the colours, though. The timing changes every year, so check the official autumn-leaf forecast before you go.

Nara was Japan's capital from 710 to 794. Todai-ji's Great Buddha, Kasuga-taisha and Nara Park, home to about 1,300 deer, are close together, and it is an easy train ride from Osaka and Kyoto. The guide suggests a day trip to 2 days.

When do the leaves turn?

The guide says each season has its own highlights: cherry trees along the Saho River in spring, the Nara Light-Up Promenade and Nara Tokae in summer, and autumn leaves in Nara Park in autumn.

The guide gives no foliage wording such as "mid-month", so this post does not name a date either. The exact timing changes every year, so check the official autumn-leaf forecast before you fix your dates.

The guide also notes that the park is crowded in autumn leaf season. Keep that in mind when you plan.

Where to see them: Nara Park

The place the guide names for autumn leaves is Nara Park. About 1,300 wild deer roam its roughly 660 hectares, and it is open every day, free of charge. It is about 8 minutes on foot from Kintetsu-Nara Station and about 20 minutes from JR Nara Station.

The deer are a national natural monument and wild animals, and males can be aggressive, especially in autumn. Don't tease them by pretending to feed them, and feed them only deer crackers (10 for JPY 200 as of 2024). They try to eat maps and plastic bags, so watch your belongings, and take your trash with you: there are no bins in the park.

Late-autumn weather and what to wear (Sep–Dec)

Using Japan Meteorological Agency normals for Nara station (1991–2020), daytime highs fall from about 29°C in September to about 23°C in October, 17°C in November and 12°C in December. Morning lows drop from about 20°C in September to about 7°C in November and about 3°C in December.

Average rainfall is about 159 mm in September, 135 mm in October, 71 mm in November and 57 mm in December.

Pack for these normals. September afternoons are still hot; in November, with lows around 7°C, you will want a jacket; December gets down to about 3°C, so bring a warm coat. You will walk a lot between the park and temples, so comfortable shoes help.

A 2-day autumn plan from the guide's itinerary

Day 1: arrive at Kintetsu-Nara Station, visit Kofuku-ji, meet the deer in Nara Park and see Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall, then end with the western view from Nigatsu-do at sunset. Kofuku-ji's three-site ticket is JPY 1,600, cash only. As checked on 5 October 2026, the five-storied pagoda is under construction work.

Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall is open 7:30–17:30 (April–October) and 8:00–17:00 (November–March); JPY 800 adult. From November it closes at 17:00, earlier than in October, so leave enough time in the afternoon.

Day 2: Kasuga-taisha early in the morning. From November to February its gates open 7:00–17:00; the main worship area is free and special worship at the main sanctuary is JPY 700. Then Isuien Garden (JPY 1,200 adult, closed Tuesdays), an afternoon walk in Naramachi, and the airport limousine bus or trains from JR Nara Station to Kansai Airport or Osaka.

Getting there and around

Nara has no airport. The airport limousine bus from Kansai Airport to JR Nara Station takes about 100–120 minutes and costs JPY 2,400 adult one way, according to the operator, Nara Kotsu. From Osaka, a direct Kintetsu train from Osaka Namba takes about 40 minutes to Kintetsu-Nara; the JR Yamatoji Rapid takes about 36 minutes from Tennoji and about 50 minutes from Osaka Station.

From Kyoto, a limited express from Kintetsu Kyoto Station takes about 35 minutes to Kintetsu-Nara (surcharge needed), and the JR Miyakoji Rapid about 45 minutes from JR Kyoto Station. There is no direct bus between Nara and Osaka or Kyoto. Check official information for fares.

The center is easy to walk. For buses, the Bus 1-Day Pass (JPY 600 adult, JPY 300 child) covers the Nara Park and Nishinokyo areas, and rental bicycles are available. Check official Japanese government information on entry procedures before you travel.
