Airport train (KA Bandara): timetable, stops and fares
The airport train links the Kualanamu Airport (KNO) station with Medan Station in the city center. The official timetable shows 12 departures a day from the airport, from 06:45 to 21:10, calling at Araskabu, Batangkuis and Bandar Khalipah. It takes about 42-44 minutes to Medan Station.

Bus and taxi options, and around Medan Station
According to Indonesia's tourism ministry, DAMRI buses and taxis also serve the airport. An airport taxi or ride-hailing car takes about 45-60 minutes to Maimun Palace, depending on traffic. Check routes and fares officially.
Merdeka Square sits right next to Medan Station, where the airport train arrives, and Kesawan, the city's oldest district, is close by. On day 1, walk Kesawan, the London Sumatra Building and the Tjong A Fie Mansion, then try soto Medan for dinner.
On day 2, see Maimun Palace in the morning, walk to the Grand Mosque, then visit the Sri Mariamman Temple in Kampung Madras. Make sure the taxi meter is on or settle the price first, and agree on the becak fare before you ride.

Medan to Lake Toba by road
The lakeside town of Parapat is 176 km from Medan, about 4-5 hours by road, so leave early. The guide's route makes an early start on day 3 to Berastagi, then sees Sipiso-piso Waterfall (120 m) at the northern tip of Lake Toba and spends the night by the lake.
Berastagi is a town at 1,300 m in the Karo highlands with a cool 17-20°C climate. Gundaling Hill gives views of the Sinabung and Sibayak volcanoes, and the town is famous for its fruit and flower markets. Lake Toba and Samosir Island
At 1,145 km² and 450 m deep, Lake Toba is Southeast Asia's largest lake, with Samosir Island in the middle. Boats cross to Samosir, where Batak villages such as Tuk Tuk, Tomok and Ambarita await.
You can also fly from Kualanamu to Sisingamangaraja XII Airport (formerly Silangit). A hired car or a domestic flight adds to the cost, so compare prices for your dates.
The lake is vast and its weather changes quickly. Check the forecast before boating or swimming, and dress and behave respectfully in Batak villages. The drive back to Medan on the afternoon of day 4 also takes about 4-5 hours.
