How many days do you need in Matsuyama? 3 to 4
Matsuyama is the main city of Ehime on Shikoku, home to Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot springs, and a hilltop castle. The airport is close and the city compact, so a relaxed onsen stay combines easily with island cycling. The guide suggests 3 to 4 days.
Stay in Dogo Onsen on the first night and stroll the onsen town; on day 2 see Ishiteji and Matsuyama Castle; on day 3 head out to the Shimanami Kaido by bike or take JR to Uchiko and Shimonada Station. Don't miss local food such as taimeshi, jakoten and nabeyaki udon.

- Day 1: airport to Dogo Onsen → ryokan check-in → stroll around the onsen town → Honkan bath in the evening
- Day 2: Ishiteji in the morning → Botchan Train into town (weekends and holidays only; check the timetable) → Matsuyama Castle → taimeshi downtown
- Day 3: a short Shimanami Kaido ride by car or bus, or JR to Uchiko and a sunset at Shimonada Station
- Day 4: souvenirs (citrus sweets) → the airport (it is close, so no rush)
Airport to the city: limousine bus, taxi or rental car
Matsuyama Airport (MYJ) is close to town. The easiest option is the limousine bus, which runs to Matsuyama Station, downtown and Dogo Onsen. It takes about 15-25 min to the city and about 40 min to Dogo Onsen, and costs about 1,000-1,200 JPY, slightly less with cashless payment such as an IC card.
A taxi takes about 15-20 min to the city. The distance is short, so it is reasonable for groups. Check official fares.
If you plan to explore the Shimanami Kaido or Uchiko, picking up a rental car at the airport is handy. It is about 15 min to the city; rates vary by car type and company, so check official rates.
- Limousine bus: about 15-25 min to the city, about 40 min to Dogo Onsen, about 1,000-1,200 JPY
- Taxi: about 15-20 min to the city; check fares officially
- Rental car: about 15 min to the city; handy for day trips
- Departure day: the airport is close to town, so no need to rush
Getting around: streetcar, Botchan Train, ropeway and JR
The streetcar is the backbone of city travel, linking Matsuyama Station, downtown and Dogo Onsen. Nationwide IC cards such as ICOCA are accepted. Payment options can change, so carry some cash too.
The Botchan Train is a sightseeing train styled on an old steam locomotive, running between the city and Dogo Onsen. It is modeled on a train from a classic novel; the ride is short but a fun keepsake. It runs on set days and times, so check official information.
Matsuyama Castle sits on a hill: ride the ropeway or a single-seat chairlift up, or walk. JR serves Uchiko and Shimonada Station; use a car or bus for the Shimanami Kaido. Rural trains can run only every few hours, so check timetables.
- Streetcar: Matsuyama Station, downtown, Dogo Onsen; nationwide IC cards accepted
- Botchan Train: city to Dogo Onsen; check operating days and times officially
- Ropeway or single-seat chairlift: Matsuyama Castle (or walk up)
- JR: Uchiko (about 30 min by limited express) and Shimonada Station; check timetables
Where to stay: neighborhoods and daily budget
For an onsen trip, stay in Dogo Onsen, a hot-spring town of ryokan and shopping arcades around the historic public bath, where strolling in a yukata is part of the fun. For dining and shopping, Okaido and Gintengai have covered arcades and restaurants in the city center, close to the castle ropeway.
For JR day trips, the area around Matsuyama Station has many business hotels; if you will mostly use buses and streetcars, Matsuyama-shi Station has a private-railway station and bus terminal close to downtown. If you plan to cycle the Shimanami Kaido (Onomichi to Imabari), Imabari at the Shikoku end is a good overnight.
Per person per day, budget about 7,000 JPY with a business hotel, udon and the streetcar, about 14,000-20,000 JPY with a city hotel, restaurants and onsen entry, or about 35,000 JPY+ with a Dogo Onsen ryokan and set-course dinners.
- Dogo Onsen: hot-spring ryokan, strolling
- Okaido and Gintengai: downtown dining and shopping
- Around Matsuyama Station: JR access, value
- Around Matsuyama-shi Station: bus and streetcar access
- Imabari (nearby): Shimanami Kaido cycling
- Daily budget per person: about 7,000 JPY / about 14,000-20,000 JPY / about 35,000 JPY+
When to go: cherry blossoms in late March-April, or October-November
The best times are late March-April for cherry blossoms and October-November. Matsuyama Castle is especially lovely in cherry-blossom season. Ehime grows citrus, so mandarins are in season in winter. June to early July is the rainy season, typhoons may come in August-September, and if you cycle the islands in summer, watch the heat.
By the climate normals, March averages a high of 14°C and a low of 6°C, April 20°C and 10°C, October 24°C and 15°C, and November 18°C and 10°C. August is the hottest at 33°C and 25°C, and January is 10°C and 3°C. June is the wettest at 229mm, July has 224mm and September 149mm; January is the driest at 51mm.
Climate figures are Japan Meteorological Agency normals for 1991–2020 at the Matsuyama station.
- Late March-April: cherry blossoms, April high 20°C
- June to early July: rainy season, June rainfall 229mm
- August-September: typhoons possible, August high 33°C
- October-November: autumn, October high 24°C
- Winter: mandarin season, January low 3°C
Onsen etiquette, day-trip notes and entry checks
At hot springs, wash before entering the bath; some facilities restrict guests with tattoos. Dogo Onsen Honkan is a historic wooden public bathhouse that gets busy in the evening, so early morning or early afternoon is quieter. Check official information for bathing options, open areas and hours.
In Uchiko old town, the wooden Uchiko-za theater is closed long-term for repairs (reopening planned for spring 2029), so check official information. On the Shimanami Kaido, wear a helmet and prepare for sun and heat in summer, and check bike rental and drop-off points in advance.
Enjoy Ehime's mandarins locally. If you are returning to Korea, fresh fruit cannot be brought in, so choose processed souvenirs such as juice or sweets and check Korea's Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency for details. Entry procedures and online arrival forms can change, so check Japanese government or embassy information before you travel.
