Short answer: from Nampo-dong to Yeongdo for Taejongdae and Huinnyeoul

Taejongdae is a clifftop park at the tip of Yeongdo island, and Huinnyeoul Culture Village is a narrow clifftop village on the same island. Both have fine sea views, so giving half a day to Yeongdo alone is time well spent. A good base is Nampo-dong and Jungang-dong, close to Jagalchi and Gukje markets.

This post goes deep on just these two Yeongdo stops. How to fit Yeongdo into a wider Busan trip is in the 2-day post, and which kind of sea trip suits each month is in the season post below.

Getting there: buses from a Nampo-dong or Jungang-dong base

Nampo-dong and Jungang-dong are close to Jagalchi and Gukje markets and not far from Busan Station, a good base for Gamcheon and Taejongdae. If you come from Seoul Station by KTX, you arrive at central Busan Station in about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, for about 50,000-60,000 won in standard class (varies by time and discounts). Busan Station is connected to subway Line 1.

Buses are handy for places the subway doesn't reach, such as Taejongdae. Check bus numbers, stops and how to get between Taejongdae and Huinnyeoul Culture Village in official information before you go. One transit card covers the subway, buses and light rail, and cards from other Korean cities work too. Taxis are easiest for hillside villages and late nights.

There is also a city tour bus, a sightseeing bus linking Haeundae, Taejongdae and other highlights; check official information for routes and times. If you stay in Haeundae, Haeundae and Nampo-dong are almost an hour apart by subway, so allow plenty of time.

Taejongdae: the clifftop park at the tip of Yeongdo

Taejongdae is a clifftop park at the tip of Yeongdo island, with walking trails and viewpoints. As in the main photo, forested slopes drop steeply into the sea, with white waves breaking on the rocky shore. The rocky sea cliffs in the photo below are part of the Taejongdae scenery too.

Check whether the park's road train is running, and its times, in official information. Check the trail lengths, walking times and opening hours in official information before you go as well. Like the guide's itinerary, a morning walk at Taejongdae followed by dwaeji gukbap or milmyeon for lunch works well.

Huinnyeoul Culture Village: the sea from clifftop lanes

Huinnyeoul Culture Village is a narrow clifftop village on Yeongdo with sea views. The guide's 3-day itinerary puts it in the evening, after Jagalchi, Gukje Market and BIFF Square. On an afternoon half-day, follow that order and stop by in the evening.

It's a residential area. Don't peer into homes or make noise, and walk quietly. Check the bus routes to the village and the nearest stops in official information before you go.

Eating near Jagalchi: raw fish, seafood and fish cakes

Jagalchi Fish Market is Korea's largest seafood market. Choose seafood downstairs and have it prepared upstairs, but much of it is sold by weight or market price. Confirm the price and any table charge before ordering.

For something light, try eomuk (fish cake) skewers with hot broth at a market or street stall; Busan is famous for fish cakes. At Gukje Market and BIFF Square near Nampo-dong you can try ssiat hotteok, a sweet pancake stuffed with nuts and seeds. For a filling meal there is dwaeji gukbap, rice in rich pork-bone soup, or milmyeon, Busan-style cold wheat noodles in chilled broth.

When to go: May-June, September-October, and the sea wind

May-June and September-October are mild and clear, the best times to visit Busan. The figures below are Korea Meteorological Administration 1991–2020 normals for Busan station: average high / average low / monthly precipitation, rounded to whole numbers. They come from the station, so Yeongdo's clifftops can differ. Of May, June, September and October, October has the least rain, at about 80 mm.

July-August is peak beach season and crowded, with rainy spells and possible typhoons. August is the hottest month of the year, with an average high of about 30°C. Winter is milder than Seoul, but sea winds are cold. January is the coldest month of the year, with an average high of about 8°C and an average low of about 0°C. Normals don't predict this year's weather, so check the forecast just before you go.

Checklist before you go

A Yeongdo half-day pairs well with a day around Nampo-dong and Jungang-dong. For a seaside walk on the Haeundae side, see the Dongbaekseom post; for winter, see the sea-wind prep post.

Entry rules for Korea (including electronic travel authorization for some nationalities) can change, so check official Korean government information before you travel.
