The short answer: dress for sub-zero nights and check closures first

December to February in Warsaw is cold, with daytime highs of about 1-3°C and night-time lows around -3 to -4°C. In return, the Royal Route and the Wilanów Palace gardens are lit with illuminations in winter.

Two things come first for a winter trip: warm clothing and closure dates. Wilanów Palace is closed from 21 December 2026 to 31 January 2027, and the Fryderyk Chopin Museum is closed until 31 December 2026 (Warsaw Tourism Office, checked October 2026).

How cold does it get? December-February normals

Here are the 1991–2020 normals for the Warszawa station (12375) from IMGW-PIB (Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute), rounded. Nights drop below freezing all through midwinter, and daytime highs are only about 1-3°C.

Of these three months, January has both the lowest highs and the lowest lows. The guide also gives January's average temperature as about -4°C.

What to wear and pack

With lows below zero, bring a heavy coat plus gloves, a hat and a scarf. Many plans involve long stretches indoors, such as museums, so layers that are easy to take off and put on work best.

In sub-zero weather, streets can freeze or collect snow. Walking the Old Town and the Royal Route is a big part of a visit, so wear waterproof shoes with good grip.

The guide also lists food for warming up: barszcz (borsch), a red beetroot soup, is perfect for warming up in winter, and flaki, a tripe soup, is a true Warsaw dish best in winter.

What to see in winter: lights and indoor sights

According to the guide, the Royal Route (Krakowskie Przedmieście & Nowy Świat) is decorated with thousands of lights in winter, and the Wilanów Palace gardens are lit with illuminations. Check official schedules for dates and times.

On cold days, build your plans around indoor sights: the Royal Castle (free on Wednesdays), the Warsaw Rising Museum (closed Tuesdays, free on Thursdays) and the POLIN Museum (free on Thursdays). Around sunset, the 30th-floor viewing terrace (114 m) of the Palace of Culture and Science looks out over the city.

The Łazienki Park gardens are open daily 6 a.m.-9 p.m., free. A combined ticket for four buildings including the Palace on the Isle is PLN 60, and the buildings are free on Fridays (individual visits only).

Getting around in winter, and closures

Start with closures. Wilanów Palace is closed from 21 December 2026 to 31 January 2027; check official information on whether the garden illuminations can be seen during that time. The Fryderyk Chopin Museum is closed until 31 December 2026 (Warsaw Tourism Office, checked October 2026). Most Sundays in Poland are non-trading days when shops close, and shops plus some museums and attractions close on public holidays.

From the airport, take SKM S2/S3 trains or bus 175 into the city. According to SKM, the airport-Central Station trip takes more than 20 minutes, so a 20-minute ticket is not enough; use a zone 1 75-minute ticket (PLN 4.40). According to the Warsaw Tourism Office, the metro runs until midnight on weekdays and until 3 a.m. at weekends, and night buses are marked 'N'.

Validate paper tickets as soon as you board a bus or tram, or at the gates to the metro platforms. Riding without a valid ticket risks a PLN 266 fine. Take taxis from the rank in front of the terminal, and avoid people offering rides at the airport or stations.

A short winter itinerary (2 nights, 3 days)

Here is the guide's 2-night, 3-day plan adapted for winter. From 21 December 2026 to 31 January 2027, while Wilanów Palace is closed, end Day 3 at Łazienki Park.

Day 2 is mostly indoor museums, so it works well on cold days. The whole Royal Route on bus 180 takes about 60-70 minutes.

Budget and checks before you go

The guide's transport costs: in zone 1 a 75-minute ticket is PLN 4.40, a 24-hour ticket PLN 15 and a 3-day ticket PLN 36; a zones 1+2 weekend ticket (Friday 7 p.m. to Monday 8 a.m.) is PLN 24. Adding paid sights: the Łazienki four-building ticket is PLN 60 and Wilanów Palace about PLN 60-70. Check booking sites for hotels and food.

Free-entry days (Royal Castle on Wednesdays; Wilanów, the Rising Museum and POLIN on Thursdays; Łazienki buildings on Fridays) keep admission costs down. The currency is the złoty (PLN); change money at registered exchange points.
