Spring (April-June) and autumn are best for walking in Vienna. March-May normals, what to wear, sight hours, airport trains, budget and a checklist.

The short answer
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are the most pleasant times for walking in Vienna. March is still cool, with average highs of 11°C and lows of 4°C; the walking season starts in April, and by May average highs reach 21°C.
A spring 2027 trip falls inside ÖBB's S-Bahn trunk line works (7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027, planned), so airport trains and S-Bahn services run differently from normal. Check ÖBB and Vienna Airport official notices before you settle your stay and transport.
March-May weather at a glance
The figures below are rounded 1991–2020 normals from GeoSphere Austria (Federal Institute for Geology, Geophysics, Climatology and Meteorology), Wien Innere Stadt station. Each line shows average high / average low / monthly precipitation.
From March to May, average highs climb from 11°C to 17°C to 21°C and average lows from 4°C to 9°C to 12°C. Monthly precipitation is 46 mm in March, 40 mm in April and 78 mm in May.
- March: 11°C / 4°C / 46 mm
- April: 17°C / 9°C / 40 mm
- May: 21°C / 12°C / 78 mm
What to wear
March means highs of 11°C and lows of 4°C, so bring a warm coat and a scarf. April runs from 9°C in the morning to 17°C at midday, so a light jacket and layers work best. In May, with highs of 21°C and lows of 12°C, one light outer layer is enough.
May brings 78 mm of precipitation, so pack a folding umbrella. The old town (1st district) is best explored on foot, so wear shoes you can walk in all day.
Even on warm days, the official rules at St. Stephen's Cathedral ask visitors to avoid sleeveless tops, short skirts and food, so carry something to cover your shoulders. Vienna's tap water comes from the Alps and is safe to drink, and with more than 1,800 drinking fountains in the city, a refillable bottle is worth bringing.
Good to know in spring: hours, sights and events
Check each sight's official information before you go to see whether its opening hours change in spring. Officially, Schönbrunn Palace and gardens, the Hofburg and the Upper Belvedere are open daily. The Kunsthistorisches Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday (late on Thursdays), so avoid Mondays, and the Naschmarkt is closed on Sundays, when only the restaurants open.
Some places are made for time outdoors. Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs' summer palace, lets you combine the palace with its gardens, and the Prater has the almost 65-metre Giant Ferris Wheel built in 1897 plus green space for walking and cycling. In wine villages such as Grinzing, Nussdorf and Neustift, pine branches and an "Ausg'steckt" sign at a Heuriger's door mean it is open.
Check the official information from the City of Vienna or the Vienna Tourist Board for spring events and festival dates before you go. Check official info around Easter, and remember that most shops close on Sundays and public holidays, so shop on weekdays or Saturdays.

Planning a spring itinerary
Vienna suits 3 to 4 nights. The day-by-day route is in the first-trip post and the Vienna travel guide's itinerary, so this section only covers what to keep in mind when fitting it into a spring trip.
- Match the weekdays: avoid Mondays for the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Sundays for lunch at the Naschmarkt.
- Opera standing room: standing tickets are sold only on the day of the performance, online from 10 a.m. in the official shop or at the standing room box office from 80 minutes before curtain, for about €13-18.
- Outdoor days: pick the dates for the Schönbrunn gardens, the Prater and a Heuriger in a wine village after checking the weather forecast.
- Tickets: buy Schönbrunn Palace tickets through the official online channel; Kunsthistorisches Museum tickets are cheaper online than on site.
Airport, city transport and daily budget
According to the airport, the Railjet keeps running normally during the works and reaches Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes (from about €4.10 incl. Vienna public transport, check official). During the works, premium buses replace the CAT train to Wien Mitte, taking about 21 minutes depending on traffic, for about €15 one way, and the S7 runs only between the airport and Wien St. Marx, where you change to trams 18 or 71. Airport bus VAB2 reaches Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz in about 20 minutes, runs around the clock and costs about €11 one way.
In the city, one ticket covers the U-Bahn, trams and buses. A single is about €3-3.20, a 24-hour ticket about €10.20 and a 7-day ticket about €25-29; the 48- and 72-hour tickets were discontinued in January 2026. Buy tickets in the official transport app or at station machines, and validate paper tickets in the blue machines before riding. City tickets cover the core zone only, so the airport leg needs a separate ticket.
Daily budgets run about €80-110 (hostels, sausage stands and market food, public transport), about €180-260 (mid-range hotel, restaurant meals, one or two paid sights) and about €450+ (luxury hotel, fine dining, opera seats). According to the Vienna Tourist Board, tipping about 10% in restaurants and coffee houses is customary but not obligatory.
Pre-departure checklist
Go through these points one by one before you leave.

- Weekdays: avoid Mondays for the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Sundays for the Naschmarkt
