A 2-day trip built around hot springs and porcelain

Western Saga Prefecture brings together Takeo Onsen, with about 1,300 years of history, Ureshino Onsen, counted among Japan's three best hot springs for beautiful skin, and Arita, where porcelain was first fired in Japan. This route leaves out central Saga and Yoshinogari and focuses only on hot springs and porcelain over 1 night and 2 days. For the standard route with Saga Castle, Yoshinogari and Karatsu, see the 2-night, 3-day post linked at the end.

The outline: on day 1, take the airport bus to Saga Station, go to Arita and back by JR, then move to Takeo-Onsen Station by limited express in the evening for the Romon Gate and Motoyu. Stay at a hot spring in Takeo or Ureshino, enjoy Ureshino Onsen on the morning of day 2, then return to Saga Station and the airport. With no overnight stay, use the day-trip version further down.

Saga Station is the base. From there it is about 24 min to Takeo-Onsen by limited express and about 40 min to Arita. Check JR Kyushu timetables for train times.

Day 1 morning: Saga Station to Arita's Uchiyama district

At Kyushu Saga International Airport, the Saga City airport bus reaches the Saga Station Bus Center in about 30–35 min for JPY 600. No seat reservation is needed, and nationally compatible transport IC cards are accepted. The stop in front of the international arrivals lobby is stop 2; check departure times in the airport's official information. The Bus Center is in front of JR Saga Station, and from there it is about 40 min to Arita by JR.

Arita is where porcelain was first fired in Japan, after porcelain stone was found at Izumiyama in the early 17th century. The Uchiyama district, lined with kilns and merchant houses, is a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings; walk its lanes slowly past white-plastered Japanese townhouses and Western-style buildings. It also helps to know that in the late 17th century the Saga domain's official kiln moved to Okawachiyama in Imari.

The Kyushu Ceramic Museum is open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), and admission is free (special exhibitions may charge). It is closed on Mondays (or the next weekday after a holiday), so avoid a Monday for your Arita day. To cover more ground, rent a bike from places such as the tourist information office for JPY 500 per rental (JPY 1,000 deposit, refunded on return) or JPY 1,000 for an e-bike.

Day 1 evening: Takeo Onsen's Romon Gate and Motoyu

Return from Arita to Saga Station by JR (about 40 min), then take the limited express to Takeo-Onsen Station, about 24 min. The hot spring area is about 10 min on foot from the station. The Takeo-Onsen Station tourist office also rents bikes 9:00–18:00.

Takeo Onsen has about 1,300 years of history. The red Romon Gate and the Takeo Onsen Shinkan are national Important Cultural Properties, and Motoyu, built in 1876, is the oldest hot spring building in Japan still in use.

Bathing at Motoyu is 6:30–23:45 (last entry 23:00), adults JPY 500, children JPY 250. With last entry at 23:00, there is time to stop by in the evening after Arita. Guests with tattoos are refused; check the rules of other bathhouses in advance too.

Spend the night in Takeo's hot spring area or at Ureshino Onsen, about 30 min from Takeo-Onsen Station by JR bus. Hot spring inns are most of the budget, so compare prices for your dates on booking sites.

Day 2: a morning in Ureshino, then Saga Station and the airport

Ureshino is a hot spring town counted among Japan's three best for beautiful skin. Try onsen yudofu for breakfast: tofu simmered in Ureshino's hot spring water turns the broth milky and the tofu melt-in-the-mouth soft, and it is a popular breakfast at the town's inns. Ureshino is also known for kamairi-cha (pan-fired tea).

The public bath Siebold-no-Yu, a two-storey Taisho-romantic wooden building, is open 6:00–22:00 (last entry 21:30), closed the third Wednesday of each month, adults JPY 450. Roof and exterior work is scheduled from 27 August to 15 December 2026, so check the official information before you go to see whether you can use it.

To head back, take the JR bus between Ureshino Onsen and Takeo-Onsen Station (about 30 min), then the limited express to Saga Station (about 24 min), and the airport bus from the Saga Station Bus Center (JPY 600, about 30–35 min). If you stayed in Takeo, you can bathe at Motoyu again from 6:30 before a trip to Ureshino. Check airport bus departure times in the airport's official information.

Day-trip version and the limousine taxi option

With only one day, use Saga Station as the hub. In the morning, take JR to Arita (about 40 min) for the Uchiyama district and the Kyushu Ceramic Museum (opens 9:00), return to Saga Station, take the limited express to Takeo-Onsen (about 24 min) for the Romon Gate and Motoyu, and return to Saga Station. Adding Ureshino Onsen means another JR bus ride of about 30 min from Takeo-Onsen Station.

To reach a hot spring town first from the airport, there are reservation-only shared limousine taxis: about 60 min to Takeo or Ureshino and about 80 min to Arita, JPY 4,000 per person. Book by 16:00 the day before by phone, or by 16:00 two days before online; without a booking they do not run. Payment is in principle cash only.

Budget, timing and pre-trip checks

The fixed costs on this route are the airport bus at JPY 600, Takeo Onsen Motoyu at JPY 500 for adults and Ureshino's Siebold-no-Yu at JPY 450 for adults; the Kyushu Ceramic Museum is free. The limousine taxi is JPY 4,000 per person. Check JR Kyushu's official information for JR fares, and check booking sites for hotel and food costs, which vary by date.

The guide names October–November as the best time. Japan Meteorological Agency 1991–2020 normals for Saga station give October an average high of 24°C, an average low of 15°C and 90 mm of precipitation, and November 18°C, 9°C and 89 mm. April–May is also good for walking (average highs 21°C in April and 26°C in May). The 22nd Autumn Arita Ceramic Fair runs in Arita from 19 to 23 November 2026.

For the standard route with the Saga Castle History Museum, Yoshinogari Historical Park and Karatsu, see the Saga 2-night, 3-day post.
