One day? Keep it to West Lake

Hangzhou deserves 3 to 4 days. With only one day, rather than squeezing in the China National Tea Museum or the Liangzhu ruins, spend the whole day around West Lake (Nanshan Road and Beishan Road), where the sights line the shore. West Lake is a shallow lake 15 km around and 5.6 sq km in area, and the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.

This day starts at the West Lake Museum, continues along Su Causeway to the Su Dongpo Memorial Hall and ends the daylight part at Leifeng Pagoda; in the evening you pick either Qinghefang historic street or the Grand Canal and Gongchen Bridge. There is also a shorter version for half a day. Staying 2 or 3 days? See the Hangzhou 3-day route, which splits the city day by day.

Morning: start with the lake's story at the West Lake Museum

Your first stop is the West Lake Museum, China's first lake-themed museum, opened on 1 October 2005. Most of the building on its 22,480 sq m site is underground, so it does not block the lake view. The permanent exhibition 'West Lake: Scenery Under Heaven' covers how the lake formed, the history of dredging and the lake in poetry and painting.

West Lake was shaped by more than a thousand years of dredging and landscaping, a work of people and nature together. The 'Two Causeways and Three Isles', the Ten Scenes and the Longjing tea plantations are all part of the World Heritage site, so seeing this background first makes the causeway and pagoda later in the day easier to read. Check official information for opening hours.

Midday: walk Su Causeway to the Su Dongpo Memorial Hall

From the museum, take a loop bus or walk to Su Causeway. The causeway is linked to the Northern Song writer Su Dongpo (Su Shi), who served in Hangzhou twice, in 1071 and 1089, dredging West Lake and building a causeway.

The Su Dongpo Memorial Hall, opened in 1989, stands at the southern end of Su Causeway. The ground floor covers his work in Hangzhou and the upper floor his writing, and the stele corridor behind shows his calligraphy from different periods carved in stone. Dongpo pork, named after him, makes a fitting meal on this day.

Afternoon: loop bus to Leifeng Pagoda

Buses 51 and 52 circle West Lake clockwise and anticlockwise, handy for hopping on and off, and there are also air-conditioned inner and outer loop routes. You can get off near Leifeng Pagoda.

Leifeng Pagoda stands on Xizhao Hill on the southern shore of West Lake. It was first built in 977 during the Northern Song; the original collapsed in 1924, and the present pagoda was rebuilt on the same site in 2002.

The loop buses also stop near the Broken Bridge. If you have time before dark, get off at one more spot and walk along the shore.

Evening: Qinghefang or Gongchen Bridge at night — pick one

After a day at West Lake, Qinghefang historic street is the easy choice. It is a few hundred metres from West Lake, a 13-hectare pedestrian area that has been a commercial centre since the Southern Song, when Hangzhou, then called Lin'an, was the capital. It has a traditional Chinese medicine museum in a pharmacy opened in 1874, and nearby Yu Qian's Former Residence at 42 Citang Lane is open free of charge. End the day with Hangzhou dishes such as sweet-and-sour West Lake fish in vinegar gravy or Sister Song's fish broth.

For canal views and night views, head to the Grand Canal and Gongchen Bridge (Gongshu). Built in the late Ming, Gongchen Bridge is the highest and longest stone arch bridge among Hangzhou's ancient bridges and the landmark at the southern end of the Grand Canal, in use for more than 2,500 years. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Museum (opened 2006) is on its east bank. From Wulinmen Wharf (ticket office at 208 North Huancheng Road, Gongshu district), boats head north along the canal past the Gongchen Bridge area. Check official information for times and fares.

To get from West Lake to Wulinmen Wharf or Gongchen Bridge by taxi, show your destination in Chinese; for the metro, check the official network map in advance.

Only half a day? One side of West Lake

With half a day, choose just one of the two options below: A if you like museums and history, B if you would rather see more of the lake.

If it is an afternoon and your evening is free, finish with a walk on Qinghefang, a few hundred metres from West Lake. If the West Lake Museum's hours don't fit your day, choose B.

Getting around, budget and timing for the day

Metro fares are distance-based, and the rule is one person, one ticket, entering and exiting with the same ticket. Electronic 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-day passes are sold in the official metro app, so compare whether one suits your route. You must exit within 240 minutes of entering, or you pay the maximum fare. Children under 1.3 m ride free with an adult. Taxis charge CNY 13 for the first 3 km, CNY 2.5 per km from 3 to 10 km and CNY 3.75 per km beyond 10 km.

If you come straight from the airport, Xiaoshan International Airport station is served by Metro Lines 1, 7 and 19; it opens at 05:50 and closes at 00:27, and you may not be able to enter the gates in the last 5 minutes before the final train. In 2026 Hangzhou was chosen as a pilot city for digital services for inbound visitors, so set up a payment method before you travel. Visa rules change often; always check official information.

Transport stays cheap if you stick to the metro and loop buses, and Yu Qian's Former Residence is free. Check official prices for museums and Grand Canal cruises, and booking sites for hotels and food, which vary a lot by date.
